My two local Walmarts have continuously scaled down on their physical media inventory over the last few years to the point where I no longer go out of my way to shop movies/TV there. It’s a wasted trip.

I find it funny that I keep hearing that Walmart is picking up the blu ray slack from Best Buy and Target and yet, every time I walk into a Walmart for groceries, I browse the physical media section and it's a barren wasteland. Bring back the barrels of DVDs and Blu rays.

I'm glad they aren't anymore this is a topic I've been wanting to discuss about how media should be handled now that the big box stores are no longer the main outlet for movies the studios have no excuse not to do several different versions and give the collectors and casual buyers what they want

Do the casual buyers even still exist anymore though, Tom? I’d think it’s their absence from the market that has had the greatest impact in retail store downsizing. The collectors clearly aren’t enough of a driving force to encourage the brick and mortars to maintain here. I’d also suggest collector’s may not be enough of a driving force to encourage studios to go in on those “several different versions” even without retail shelf space being a consideration. Recall RMB’s perspective on why CBS stopped restoring their Star Trek series. They didn’t sell well enough to justify the cost. I’m part of the reason for that. Even as a huge Star Trek fan I wasn’t willing to shell out $50ish for a single season of “vintage” television. It wasn’t until they chose to bring the prices down in stripped down box sets that I chose to buy in.

I believe that often the only difference between shrinking and dying is a length of time. At the end of the day, availability matters. When availability begins a continuous trend of shrinkage, how long before it becomes a snowball rolling down a hill? Me buying more than ever doesn’t mean it’s not on its way out any more than me going to the theater now more than ever doesn’t mean the theater industry isn’t on its way out.
@FanZceneVids

I personally have never had problems finding any release I've wanted. Honestly what we're looking at here is the death of brick and morter stores, and that does effect availability of a lot. I still don't think physical media is on the way out. Some of the reasons we're buying more releases is because more DVDs and Blu-Rays than ever before are being released. Your points are always welcome, and helps with great discussions.

I feel like people confuse the crash of the video game industry with the fall of physical media as a whole but unlike video games these days, if I buy a movie on disk in most cases I'll have that entire movie for life unless it's extremely cut from the original but even then it's still watchable without any downloads or internet connection required. Just because the video game industry is crashing doesn't mean all forms of physical media are dying with it.

I just picked up Daredevil Season 2 blu-ray set from Amazon and got the Puppet Master 12 blu-ray set for subscribing to Full Moon Features, which was a killer deal. I currently have a package on the way from Vinegar Syndrome and just ordered a large package from Severin Films over the weekend too. I guess the Daredevil Netflix series does still exist in the real world. I hope we'll see Godzilla Minus One hit blu-ray soon. I still haven't seen it and it looks like something I wouldn't want to see disappear from existence. I'm kind of worried about this. I watched the movie Bad Channels on Full Moon and enjoyed that, despite the shoddy picture quality on that stream. Looks like the DVD is out of print, but still affordable, but I'd prefer a blu-ray. I also just watched Sorority House Massacre on Shudder and noticed the picture pixelating in the dark scenes. Bet it doesn't do that on the blu-ray.

Psychical media will die, it's just a matter of when. There will not be a 8k blu-ray disc, but they will eventually release movies digitally in 8K online. Once this happens, 4k blu-ray disc sales will die off and so will 1080p blu-rays as well. How many years this will take is anybody's guess

Frankly, I would have trouble thinking of recent movies I would want to keep on my Plex let alone on bluray. People love collectibles, if the studios made it something people actually wanted to collect then they would likely sell out. Like put a little black goat figurine in with The Witch and you sell out. Put a genital monster that bleeds from the testicles in with 'Beau is Afraid' and I guarantee it flies off the virtual shelves.

So, I talked about the Red Box thing on Geeky Geezers last night (gave you a shout out, of course) and I realized that the Red Box aspect is ancillary to the fact that the parent company is shutting down. That is not a reflection on the Red Box business model. That caused me to think more about this Target/WalMart thing. Well, if you are one who shops at these two "big box stores" you know that physical media isn't the only thing they are carrying less and less of. It's getting harder and harder to find ANYTHING in brick and mortar stores. When you ask, they say, "Oh, look at the online store." Screw Target, WalMart actually has way more stuff available online than in the stores. It's not that physical media is dying ... brick and mortar stores are dying.

@@TroyPacelli It was already failing. It’s closing now because of the mismanagement of its parent company, but this parent company bought it out in the first place in 2019 because it was on the decline then, and continued being so. My local Vons grocery store did away with their Redbox about a year ago. Their customer service has been a joke for years. None of that is on its parent company.
@TroyPacelli

@@SumDumGy It's always on the parent company; that's how business works. And these things don't exist in a vacuum. Chicken Soup for the Soul was a publishing company. They tried to branch outside of their core business and all branches suffered. And thanks for your anecdotal report about your store and your Redbox kiosk. I don't think one location is very representative of the 24K, at least if my 3 years of university study in statistical analysis is to be believed.

Best Buy and Target are not the World of Physical Media and it never was in my Opinion. Yes it is true that the mainstream of buyers have lost interest in the physical medium but that does not mean that this medium is dead For example the DVD is still the king 💿 👑 when it comes to sales then the second place goes to Bluray and third and last is the 4K. It is true that it will become more difficult to get hold of the stuff and that is exactly why you should buy more specifically. Godspeed 🤘

Best Buy, Circuit City and Target absolutely used to be *my* World of Physical Media. Now one doesn’t exist and I have no reason to walk into either the other two. I think at this point the only reason Blu-ray sales still beat 4K is due to title availability. Without fail when I monitor sales on Amazon of titles that have both formats released it on pre-order, the 4K sales appear to be double or more the Blu-ray sales. I think when you compare apples to apples per title, 4K is selling higher.

I haven't bought a DVD or CD in over a decade. Everything you want is available online for free. Any media format that can be digitized is virtually worthless.
