I have practiced many sports more or less passionately during my 39 years of life. - Judo - Basketball - Football - Rugby - Running And i can tell you honestly that none of those even came close to the suffering i had to endure when i started my attempt to follow a local veteran group (50+) after i decided to practice something with less physical impact on my joints and back. It literally took me 2 years of gruesome practice to be remotely decent enough to ride with local people my age. Only those who, even as total noobs and amateurs, find themselves in a summer day trying to get over a 10k segment with a 10% gradient average know what sort of pain and misery cyclists go trough. It's been 5 years since i started riding bicycles seriously and i became fitter than i ever was. Leaner, healthier, better cardiovascular capacity than when i was 21, no more joints problems from impact sports and the hours of pain uphill and bliss downhill are the best mental therapy you can get. But don't get fooled. All things have a bad side. I used to laugh and cry at people when they said they spent 1k on a bicycle. Now i find myself ruining my bank account on bikes and gear of all sort. In fact, i literally had to downgrade my car in order to finance my bikes. Anyway, totally worth it. Cars bring me no joy at all. Shiny carbon framed bikes with perfectly clean transmission and spot on trued aero wheels do.

I've been in the sport since the 1980s. The best race I ever saw was a kids' race in Grand Rapids, MI. They did one full lap of the criterium course. When the leader came around the final corner, he realized that that was the finish line he saw. A second later, a girl came around the corner. The boy turned around and saw the girl. The girl noticed the finish line was just ahead. The sprint was on. Two 10-year-olds just went at it like it was the world championships. The crowd was inside out screaming like banshees. The girl fell just short, but had a huge smile on her face and waved to the crowd when she crossed the line. Best sport ever.

@@ivanlecky7563 Merckx was three times suspended in his career due to performance enhancing drugs, but only the riders in the epo epoc are referred as cheats. @daAnder71 Lance was always protected in the mountains by riders which could have been also possible Tour de France winners in other teams. Herras, Landis, Hamilton always had shielded him from the wind, so he was able to save energy for his attacks. Instead of Jan who was always riding allone in the front of the leading group with no protection. That was a huge advantage of Lance back then.
