Highly recommend the sequel mini-series This is England 86, 88 and 90. The movie is set in 83 (filmed in 2006) and the series follows the same cast naturally aged at 88 (filmed in 2011). It still has the same rawness and grit of the movie. So underrated and should have more praise

Absolutely loved all of the mini series, but definitely '90 the most. Spoiler Warning: I'm so pissed that we never got a conclusion to the end of the series. I wanted to see the fallout of what we can only assume was Combo getting killed, and Milky having a hand in it. Though, on the other hand, even if there is no resolution, it does feel somewhat appropriate as an ending. We ended the film absolutely hating Combo and feeling sorry for Milky; it's kind of poetic to end the series on an emotional inversion where we feel sorry for Combo and absolutely hate Milky.

Love this filmmaking style so much. Love the performances, especially Joe Gilgun and Stephen Graham. It’s a rough story but told so authentically… it’s engrossing. Stephen Graham’s (Combo) grandfather is Jamaican. Growing up, Stephen was harassed for being mixed race. He almost quit acting after this role because he said it got to him so badly.

I will add that Stephen Graham became one of my favorite actors after this, though everybody was great. Tbh it surprised me with how much conviction he played this shall we say “unsavory” role, and the extremely fractured sense of self and vulnerability that drove his virulent racism and hatred. But then he could also go back to bring more toned down and perhaps genuine but often manipulative at any given time, *until* the end.

Conditions were really bad in the UK when Thatcher came to power. The British working-class were suffering the "winter of discontent" of 1978-1979 due to massive union strikes which saw a reduction in power being available. They had something like a 3 day week of power being available during a period of colder winter, it was that bad. Historically this kind of discontent amongst the plebs is the kind of environment that will bring out extremists looking for someone to blame. There was also resentment amongst many working class skinheads towards immigrants that they perceived to be having a more "comfortable" life than they were. It's these kind of conditions that the BNF managed to capitalize on. The reality is that the skinheads were a diverse group of working class boys and girls. They were all suffering, but some of them chose the wrong thing to blame.

Kudos. Ad info-nitim. For reacting to this. We`re here for those, `How many countries have they colonised?, man the hypocrisy`, moments. American History X got close, but this is a long hard ( honest) look at ourselves. And we look deeper, this movie is by way of an introduction. By comparison, we are not hypocritical. There is a big world out there. We like watching Americans come to this realisation. Great channel by the way.

The most common flag for Northern Ireland is a red cross with a red hand in the centre. The red hand is a reference to ancient Irish folklore (Cúchullain and the Red Branch Knights) but I don't know why they chose the English cross. The actual Anglo-Irish cross is a red saltaire (diagonal cross) called a St Patrick's Cross and it's represented on the Union Flag along with the English and Scottish crosses. Don't know why Wales isn't represented on the Union Flag.
@joshbates9015
@joshbates9015 10 ай бұрын
I think the obvious reason Wales isn't included in the Union Jack is that a large red dragon would dominate people's attention over any other aspect of the flag, giving people the impression that Wales is the preeminent kingdom in the UK, rather than England. In short, the Welsh flag is just too badass.

The Jay Report about sexual violence against English girls, the abandonment of the North and midlands of England in favour of global finance based out of London, the end of empire and manufacturing, the devaluing of the pound, the gutting of social services, rampant drug addiction, 5 wars in thirty years (Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq a second time, Iraq-Syria), domestic terrorism and a culture where it was common for 3 generations in a row to never have held a job, much less a profession… "Faced with an indifferent London, to survive and compete for limited resources the working class of England chose to become ethnic themselves and began exploring far-right rhetoric couched in the language of blood and soil". The UK’s leadership willfully ignored what was happening under their noses until it finally boiled over. The English were fed up and David Cameron’s conservatives begrudgingly promised to hold a referendum on European Union leadership to stop and siphon off the rising tide of support for the English Defence League, the British National Party, and many other smaller groups that were all coalescing in the background to the rallying cry of "This is England". End result: Brexit. Not much has changed and the chthonic forces that lurked under the surface of English society continue to awaken since their first manifestation in the 1960’s…

I have to disagree with your analysis that Combo is psychotic. This is not what psychosis looks like. Combo has severe mental issues though, as apparent by the scene with Lol in the car, but also how he is playing a power game with his so called friends, manipulating, threatening and love-bombing. His behaviour suggests he might have Borderline personality disorder, but it is a fictional character after all so it's impossible to make a proper diagnosis. The scene that ends with Combo assaulting Milky tells us some important things: first, he sees relations as transactional. Even if Combo believes in a racist ideology, he is willing to hang out with Milky because he has access to weed. But the guys seem to bond over their common love for music and the skinhead culture. What finally ticks off Combo is when Milky starts to talk lovingly about what Combo lacks most of all: a big family. He is confronted, not only by the poverty of his own culture but also his utter loneliness. Combo turns his sorrow into anger and jelousy, because that's probably what he has always done. When the other guys "want in" on beating up Milky, he attacks them because they are completely missing the point. Combo's rage is not directed towards Milky because he is Jamaican, Combo is furious about his own life and these deadbeats are just as much a thing he despises. Stephen Graham is absolutely fantastic in this role. One of the best acting performances I have ever seen.

the thing about the england flag is that its just a flag for england. So, since we're in a "United Kingdom" flying the england flag implies youd rather england be alone and not in a kingdom. But its a bit overblown to be honest. Anytime the world cup football is on, there are england flags everywhere since we compete as countries seperately instead of as a united kingdom, so its not exactly a taboo thing or anything. Then again, when you see someone that has an england flag flying outside their house all year round, its becomes quite predictible to figure out what sorta person they are, but thats probably more down the that fact that people dont really fly flags much here, so its only really the more die hard people that do have em. I always tend to call them "brexit flags" these days.

It's heavily implied that Combo did not come from a loving family and has had a generally shit life. He was jealous of Milky. It's no excuse for what he did, but he's a deeply hurt and troubled individual. THC will bring out your insecurities and emotions, and amplify them. Then throw alcohol into the mix and you have a "psychotic" episode waiting to happen.
