In this episode of Wandering Wagners we share our dog, Piper, journey with needing to get knee surgery (TPLO) and her journey so far. This is HARD for everyone. Piper is our 5 year old high energy, high attitude, boxer mix dog.
October of 2023 we noticed that Piper started to limp a little after playing but after a day she was back to normal and acting like nothing was wrong. We didn't think anything of it until it happened again, then again and she was limping longer. We stopped letting her play hard and got her into the vet. The vet tried meds first for inflammation and pain and 2 weeks of rest. That seemed to help and she was then good until we got back from South Dakota. She ran around in the yard and started limping as soon as we got back home. We scheduled her for x-Rays and they determined that her doggy ACL ligament was slowly tearing, strand by strand. The vet gave us multiple options but they suggested we do the TPLO (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy) Surgery due to her age and activity levels. Our vet office does not perform that surgery so we had to find another vet to do the surgery. Luckily our friend Andrea Fitch from Following the Fitchs works as a vet surgical tech and the clinic she works at does do this surgery so we decided to schedule with that vet. The vet is very close to Alum Creek State Park, so we traveled and stayed there while Piper had her surgery.
The surgery went well and Piper was picked up later that same day and we decided to go home while she was still sleepy from anesthesia.
That first night (and week) was ROUGH! Piper refused to lay down the entire night so i stayed up with her to make sure she was ok.
She is still recovering and needs to go several more weeks until she gets more X-Rays to see if the bone is healed or not.
