When you enter a buffet restaurant after starving yourself or fasting the entire day, you are there to do some major damage to your body. You want to get your money’s worth, and you may even have a tried-and-true plan of action.
You dress in your most comfortable clothes, and you begin with salad and soup, eventually working your way up to the main entrees. Even when you’re barely breathing, you still make room for dessert.
Do you ever wonder how buffets make money if everyone is doing what you’re doing? Here is the secret to how all-you-can-eat buffets really make their money.

I was once asked to leave an IHOP on all you can eat pancake day when it wasn't a regular thing. I ate a full meal and 9 cakes. When I asked for more, they brought 2 in a box with the bill. The more reasonable way I've seen buffets get around the "huge guy eating all the food" problem is that they have a time limit of like 1-2 hours so you can't just come in at lunch and pig out all day.
@helvete983
@helvete983 2 жыл бұрын
My local has that for evening buffets, where they charge a lot more and have mongolian bbq too, but the lunch buffet is like half the price, most of the same food too and basically you can eat until they stop the lunch serving 11:30 - 14:30, but still the evening buffet is a 2 hour limit, which is reasonable for anyone except land whales.

I worked as cook in a popular buffet and we never kicked anyone out for eating too much. I often encouraged people to try to get their money’s worth($25 a person) by suggesting the prime rib and crab legs. Every weekend we had king crab and I would mix more in, against my superiors orders, because people wanted it more than the snow crab. The only time I got someone kicked out was when a lady took one out carving knives and put it in her purse.

I used to be policeman in a fairly large city. We had a captain and a lieutenant banned from a local buffet for making absolute pigs of themselves (no pun intended) at a local buffet. The restaurant had a policy of letting on duty officers eat free, which was created in order to ensure a police presence. These two idiots would put their uniforms on and go there on their days off and eat for hours. If I had been chief I would have fired the both of them. They changed it to half price later, because the department declared free meals a gratuity, and banned us from eating anywhere that offered a gratuity to on-duty officers. I was fine with that; I didn’t want anyone to feel that I should be beholden to them.

I recall a news article from the UK being ridiculed on TV, 2 guys had been banned from an all you can eat because the owner said they were putting him out of business. It's not illegal as the staff do reserve the right to refuse entry regardless of the reason.
@josphellihsilak4588
@josphellihsilak4588 5 жыл бұрын
The story about the banning is incorrectly portrayed. He called the police on the establisment because they refused him further service. He ate 12 fried fish fillets at an all you can eat fish fry. He was then cut off, but they gave him a take out container with 8 additional fillets. He then called the police because he claims they violated the 'all you can eat' agreement. He was banned however because he had a running tab that he didn't pay, he boycotted the establishment with signs, and he consistently gave the staff trouble on fish fry days. He was disruptive and a menace, which isnt to say he should have been cutoff, but the establisment had a long running issue with him and his behavior. Personally Id say hes a disgusting slob of a man, which again, doesnt mean an 'all you can eat' restaurant should not allow its customers to eat all they can.

A Running Tab At An All You Can Eat Fish Fry..?? This Comment To "Set Straight" The Videos Story Seems More Absurd Than The Videos Portrayal Of What Happened... Who Runs A Tab For A Buffet And Why Wouldn't They Have Him Pay Off The Tab Before The Occurrence Of This Final Time When They Actually Cut Him Off With A "Farewell, To Go Container"? Still.. When They Agreed To Allow Him To Partake In That Particular "All You Can Eat" Then That Makes Irrelevant The Previous Tab Unpaid And He Should Be Allowed To Be Waited & Served Like All Other Customers Partaking In That Same Menu Choice For The Night... Now If There's Fine Print (like, All You Can Eat, *Limit 12 Filets Per Each Buffet Customer* Then That Would Make More Sense... Also The Only Other Part Of This "Clear Up" Is The Part About Sneaking Food To A Buddy/Non-Paying Customer... That Is Stealing Really And That Makes Perfect Sense Then... The Rest Though...😕

It doesn't bother me at all that the restaurant makes a profit. If they didn't they would have never opened their doors. I get a good meal at a fair price. If I didn't I wouldn't choose to eat there. I don't have to eat all I can. I eat enough to sate my appetite. Any more than that and I would be wasting money trying to get the pounds off later. Your mother was wrong when she told you to finish your plate. Eating too much is not healthy and a waste of exercise. BTW, I already know how any business makes money. Its called buying something and selling it for more. Product or service, it matters not.

Back in the day, that is, 45 years ago I happened to work at a penitentiary in a small state with a small population. There were only 850 men at the single penitentiary. Another 150 men were occupied at the State Farm, growing the food and animals that fed the prison population and staff. I was at a college even smaller than that but I can honestly say that I had the best institutional food in my life at that penitentiary, because it was good and well prepared. The bonus was having to go to the women's unit from time to time since they got a portion of the same food when it was being offloaded for the men's Institution. The really nice thing about it was that the women rotated in the kitchen and made Home recipes just like their moms and their Grandma's had taught them. What has happened since then? As for the women, they have grown up not knowing how to cook. But the key thing with food is that the failed drug war has so increased the population of prisoners that they are being fed on pennies per meal margins, processed food, and what can only be called marginally food. I once saw in a bulk walk-in freezer a product I know for a fact came from the mafia, marked meatballs for spaghetti, not less than 48% meat, leaving up to 52% four sets of the poles or just plain cellulose

I worked a small family style buffet place while going to school. They never wasted anything.They would put out Fried Chicken, then what ever was left over would get a dunk in BBQ sauce and put back out as BBQ chicken. The BBQ sauce would disguise the fact that the chicken wasn't fresh. If they put out baked chicken the next night the leftovers would go into Chicken Pot Pie or some kind of soup. We also had a cold side that had cold stuff and fruit. If it was a slow night I would make a fruit platter with nice sized portions of Oranges Watermelon, Cantelope, etc.When we were really super busy I would get a good sharp knife and turn the fruit platter into a work of art but the slices were so thin you could literally see through them. It was a pleasant edible decoration and people usually wouldn't take very much so it would last longer and I didn't have to keep filling it up every 5 minutes. At first I felt like I was sort of taking advantage of people but then I started getting compliments on my fruit platters which would kind of inspired me to make new and different patterns and designs. I remember helping unload the truck when it came in and we would get big 50 or 100 pound bags of potatos, onions and carrots. I don't know if we had genetically modified vegetables back in the 80s but some of the carrots we got in were damn near as big as my leg. The would always be busted open down the length of the thing like they grew too fast or something but working one up was like working a piece of wood. Like whittling on a big tree limb.

Bobby Spurlock sweet. I worked in food processing for a bit. More on the production side. Deboning, cutting stew meat, and packaging. There are many money saving techniques that companies use that the public is kept in the dark about. Most are methods of short changing the consumers. Adding fat and water mostly. What you described wasnt a shock but im sure most people think something else. Reminds me of an old saying.. "people like hamburgers but dont want to see them made" I think these days more people are willing to see them made.. And made well.
@Xx1tyler21xX
@Xx1tyler21xX 6 жыл бұрын
I'm a country boy so I've worked up a lot of wild game. Never knew the proper way to make cuts but just kinda made it up as I went. Worked with some ex-meat cutters so I learned a few things from listening to them. One summer the power company screwed something up and we were without power for about 4 or 5 days so later they kinda did like a class action thing where the gave anyone who applied so much money per person in the household. We have a good size family so it came out to a pretty good chunk of change. We had never done it before but we decided to use the money to buy a beef and a hog for the freezer. For the money that was a lot of meat. Had a full size stand up freezer and an old side by side refrigerator with a freezer on the side and still had to go buy a small chest type freezer to get it all in. It was an investment. Compared to store prices it was dirt cheap and the quality is so much better. When browning hamburger for chili, spaghetti or whatever, it never had to be drained. Literally from a 2 pound bag of burger you might get a half a teaspoon of water and fat from it. If you started with 2 pounds you ended with 2 pounds. No loss. If you go buy Walmart burger, it doesn't matter if you get the 75/25 or the 80/20 it's all the same. More like 50/50. It's about half meat and half water that you have to drain off and throw out. If you pay $5 a pound for Walmart hamburger you are actually paying $5 for a half pound of meat or $10 a pound. Chickens are the same way. It should be illegal. Yeah, most people think their meat comes from a happy magical place.

If you're going to a buffet to get "the most for your money," that's a losing battle, like this video points out. However, if you're going for the variety, then that's where a buffet really shines, because in what other restaurant environment can you get a meal consisting of salmon, popcorn shrimp, slices of roast beef, a bowl of soup, a cinnamon roll, a side of mashed potatoes, and fried okra? Nowhere that I know of, and if you did, it would cost a fortune, not because of the quality or amount of food, but because of the diversity of items on the plate. Buffets are a godsend for the indecisive. You don't run into the problem of ordering chicken and then partway through realizing, "I should have gotten the post roast." Get up, and go get some pot roast. It's like magic.

Never put rice or mashed potato on ur plate when u go to a buffet restaurant & say no to soda just drink water, carbonated beverages could easily make u full hot tea is better it helps u digest ur food

I try to drink ice tea or fruit juice. as noted soda can fill you up. It's interesting about the meats & high end items. ceces pizza buffets go cheap. They now add fewer pizza toppings from ten years ago....

Yes, there are many things one shouldnt eat at a buffet place. But when i go out to eat at a buffet place, i go to enjoy myself. Not restrict myself. Mashed potatoes and sodas are among my favorites at the buffet place. After all, im not going out of my way to a buffet place, pay good money to eat there, only to drink water.

Growing up, my dad wouldn’t let us drink our waters at the buffets. He wanted us to get full from food only. We were not allowed to eat rice, pizza, pasta, fruit, cakes etc. Just meat (cooked from the chef in front of you) and vegetables. Lol he used to say, make a dent children. Five of us. 😂 We waited until our stomach digested to eat again. We were there for hours! My dad was cheap by the way. Love you Pappy!!

Buffets buy food in large quantity, thereby securing bulk food prices. The real money in a buffet in Texas is charging separately for the beverage. Soft drinks cost $.16 per glass to produce for the buffet, and here in Texas, they charge $1.98 for drinks on average.

Joke's on them! Just get 12 or more refills, and you'll come out on top! Hell...any Chinese buffet I've gone to they practically hang over your shoulder the entire time trying to fill your glass back up after each sip anyway.

Corey That’s so true lol. What’s worse at a Chinese buffet is when you’re almost done and they ask about a refill and you say “just fill it up half way I’m almost done” and here they come with their big gulp size cup full to the top.

There is a Thai place near me that only has an all you can eat buffet one day a week for dinner only. It is SO much better than normal buffet as its cooked by their normal chef, and they prep each pan as needed. Its a little pricey at $15, but drinks are also part of it so its a flat $15+tax. I still tip cause the guys running the pans and filling drinks are super fast. Its the only buffet I dare go to anymore.

One ex coworker of mine whom came in at about 450lbs. absolutely loved all you can eat buffets. He told me (before he went on permanent disability) one trick he would do is find out what time the dinner priced menu starts and get there at the tail end of the cheaper lunch menu and put something small in front of him and pick at it making it look like he's actively eating. Then when the dinner items come out he gorges himself with the more expensive dinner menu food items, but with the cheaper lunch menu price. I never endeavored to take his advice on this nor will I as I would rather not be bed ridden and have all kinds of health problems the rest of my life.

Why run a buffet if all you're going to do is complain about customers eating there? I like the diversity of items but at a lot of buffets (Chinese mainly) you get people who seem to resent the customer. Don't stand their glaring at the customers. I know people who do go and make pigs of themselves, grab up all the crab legs or expensive items but most people DO NOT do this. I know we never "get our money's worth" at buffets because we are not big eaters. We make up for the ones who sit and stuff themselves for three hours.

Lol me and my girlfriend caused a Chinese buffet to start charging 8.99 for a pound of crab legs because we would get 4 or 5 plates with crab legs stacked as high as possible ( probably about 10 pounds ) then break them open and pile the crab meat on a plate like 6 inches high and then devour them with melted butter lol they would stare at us with the dirtiest looks

Ok, in my opinion, if you got a restaurant that says “all you can eat buffet,” then you better be prepared if a bus load of fat people to come in & eat ALL they want. No one should be asked to leave because you do have an all-your-can-eat buffet. If you don’t like people going back 4-5 times then close the restaurant.

Always love the “chef” who appears at the meat station to “hand carve” your choice of meat. Let’s be honest, here. That “chef” is simply standing guard. I love when they cut you a “sliver” of meat. I’ll do the dance the first time, but my second time back, I’m calling the shots. Start carving...roast beef, ham and turkey.

That thing about the drinks is no joke. I remember a few years back, 4 of us went to a "free" buffet at a casino. The only thing you had to pay for was your drink. No matter what you got, it was $8 a drink and that even included water and you had to buy a drink. At 1st, I thought $32 for 4 of us to eat all we wanted was still a deal. Then I saw the food. The casino buffet was definitely the ones on the winning end.
