I've had great success training our farm dog Molly the Old English Sheepdog. Olive is still a young puppy and needs some extensive obedience training and some farm specific training to do with the livestock so be sure to watch all the way through to get some ideas on how to train your new pup. These are just my methods so take it for what it is. Hope you enjoy the episode and thanks for watching. #farmdog #oldenglishsheepdog #farmpuppy #puppytraining #farmlife
SUBSCRIBE if you liked the video and wanna see these two puppies grow up on the farm together. We're transforming a 90 acre property into an amazing farm stay & Experience vacation rental.

What a hoot, Olive chasing after kitty while in school then flopping down like a toy in front of Big Red!! I love it when she looks up at you for direction at times. Olive is a sweet peach 🍑

It’s almost like she looks to me to be sure she’s doing the right thing. I was surprised how calm she was when Big Red pecked her.

love it super cute and informative the only thing of advice (am late by a year danngit seeing this lol) is dont repeat the command so much because you get frustrated and dog gets frustrated and it also sets you up to repeat command over and over kinda like how you said you dont wanna bribe the dog you want to reward the dog. Say command wait 1-4 seconds then remind, or use your finger to show them, then reward. ok thanks bye

Your videos have come up on my feed on several occasions as I'm fairly new to farm/ranch life. My oldest son moved back home to work on the ranch and is asking for a puppy. My biggest worry is that a lot of the farmers and ranchers have a rule that if a dog is caught away from their property and especially if they nip at any animals, then they're seen as bad dogs and get put down. I have only ever raised cats and am very good at training them. They are like children to me. I feel like I would be even more attached to a dog. I want us to be responsible dog owners and have well trained helpful dogs but I hardly know where to start. The behavioral needs and general consistencies a dog needs are greater than a cat I feel. ❤ thank you!

My dogs are Old English Sheepdogs and are a herding breed. I don't use them as herding dogs though. They naturally nip at anything when they're young, but with a bit of repetition and training can be stopped. Our 2 dogs can be with all the animals with no worries, I have total trust in them. Lots of info on youtube about training and how to start from day 1, get yourself familiar in different techniques before committing cause a puppy can learn bad habits really quick. Cats practically need no training compared to dogs. Fencing can help or even invisible fencing for dogs to keep them in a certain area if that's a worry. Our dogs free range on our 90 acres but really only stay with the 10 acres around the farm area. But again I've trained them that way. A dog is a great addition to any farm. Plus you need to decide what it is you want a dog for. Just as a companion that will roam the farm, but live indoors as part of the family? or an actual livestock guardian dog that will live with the animals and protect from predators. There are different breeds for that too so do your research. The first 2 years with a new puppy are really the hardest part...training and disciplining etc but after that they are great friends and will never leave your side. Best of luck.

Olive is settling in so well, Molly is a great teacher. I love your videos. My daughter has an Old English Sheepdog puppy so your videos contain great tips for training and caring for them. It is also nice to see the same charateristics across the breed, things we thought were bad traits seem to be OESD traits, we would not have known that without your videos, so thank you so much.

You would be getting a Livestock Guardian dog? LSG can be trained to guard chickens, ducks, etc,etc. if there a predators in your area (including a birds of prey) an OES wouldn’t do much about it. Plus an LSG can sleep outside and be your overnight alarm. It doesn’t have to be a huge breed of LSG, but it’s something for you to keep in mind! Cool video!
@HiddenSpringFarm

Longer term plan is to have an LGD but the challenge is that we are trying to run a farm stay vacation rental and want an interactive experience for the guests. an LGD might be barking all night giving the guests no peace. We have hawks, eagles, owls. Coyotes, fox, racoon,weasels, fisher cats. I have a sad video about a tragedy on the farm losing Stormy & Lovely in the same night to coyotes. They were my favorite cats and Stormy used to ride on my shoulder wherever I went on the farm. I miss her. For now they get protected in the catio/cat house every night. I'd like some fencing before upgrading to an LGD also, but still make the farm accessible to guests.
