Finally, a 'life hack' that isn't bogus, this is legit how most car body shops restore headlights, not a click bait, this is genuine, one bit of advise I can give, is make sure the Clear Coat you use on the headlights when you spray them has UV protection in it, this will help against this ever happening again, as its the sun's UV that causes the 'Yellowing' and 'Hazing'that causes the damage in the first place, just helps to avoid this from happening again, if not, once the paint has had time to dry and cure, and has had several hours to dry hard, give them a gentle final polish with a very fine finishing wax that has uv protection, not anything which has cutting compound or you'll undo all this hard work 👍

Well I always use a 3k cutting polish over a 2-layer 2k clearcoat, but you need to know what you’re doing ofcourse. A decent 2k clear can get pretty hard, you wont be polishing that off that easily. However with headlights I only use a da-polisher and no pressure, 2 passes should do before going to finer polishes. But you are correct, this is the only right way to restore headlights.

Thank you and great question! For example let’s say you start wet sanding horizontally with 600 grit, you would continue sanding until the entire headlight is covered with the 600 grit sanding marks and the old coating has been completely removed. Don’t go to the next step until you do that first. Then you would sand vertically with 800 grit until you are no longer able to see your 600 grit marks. Then you would sand with 1000 grit horizontally until you can no longer see the 800 grit marks. After that you can wipe with alcohol and you are ready for clear coat! Hope this helps lol!

@@lindz151074 years ago I compared shooting over 1k and 800 and sometimes you can see the 800 marks after. It’s best to spray over 1k. Spraying outside is the best option unless you have access to a body shop. I can agree with waxing the headlights once in a while tho!

Make sure you warm the can Best way is to warm it in the microwave
@modernvehiclecare

I place it in front of space heater, microwave sounds kinda dangerous man but I respect it 🫡🤣

Microwave is dangerous to warm the can which can explode. Warm water (not hot water) is the safest way.

can and should you do this for taillights?
@modernvehiclecare

Tail light are made of acrylic are very rarely oxide the same way headlights do. I have seen that sometime when the tail lights are part of the trunk, over time the factory coating will crack and fade from the constant slamming of the trunk. In that case they can be wet sanded and clear coated like headlights

Do you need any better results polishing the plastic itself to clear finish or is the 2K clear enough which obviously I see it clear but just wondering if polishing the plastic perfectly is a necessary step that I take
@modernvehiclecare
@modernvehiclecare Жыл бұрын
If you want to clear coat headlights, polishing is not necessary at all. Just wet sand up to 1000 grit and spray clear coat

@@modernvehiclecare 🤦‍♂️ I've done at least 6 cars of my family and friends with 2K clear (because that is the only proper way to do it to make it last more than a year in PA) and have have gone up to 3000 grit and compound and polish to a mirror finish 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I very much appreciate this video!
@modernvehiclecare

No worries man lol as long as you spray with a warm can the finish should look great without any polishing at all! 🫡

sometimes you will have to. specially if its on the inside of the lens. even then it is fixable but you will have to take it apart with a heat gun and its just a huge pain.
