As someone who grew up below the poverty line, I can say this one thing, my mom would never buy from companies like Shein to clothe us. She needed clothes that would last years in both quality and trend-wise. I would remember her looking at every stitch, the material, and cut of the garment before she purchased anything (back then it was super annoying, but I get it now lol). Most of these trend companies won’t be around in a few years, but the damage they cause will be.

It's also the fact that people don't have the knowledge anymore. She knew what to look for in stitching and materials. but people now are just "leaving it up to the professionals". These companies are taking advantage of us and saving money where they can. We're not holding them accountable, and it sucks.

I do the same things to find good quality clothes because I can’t afford to have to re-buy things over and over again. I went to a church thrift store on “fill a bag for $5” day and those clothes took me through enough job interviews and days of work to get to a better place financially. I still have some of those clothes 5 years later. It frustrates me to no end seeing friends shop fast fashion because “I can’t afford to shop anywhere else” when they could go a whole month without doing a single load of laundry because they own so much clothing!!

Yeah but it's not even that much of an option in most places anymore. 1 is what another person in this thread commented, and 2 - even in the cheap places people still go early and grab anything they can resell, leaving basically nothing you can actually wear. We need to normalize places where people sell their second hand stuff at actual cheap prices depending on the condition and quality of the garment rather than leaving it to greedy businesses driven by nothing but profit.

This is where I think we're not seeing the full picture. Shopping second hand for plus sizes is extremely hard. Especially when you venture above a size 18, and your income is limited. Never mind finding something you actually enjoy, is in your budget, and somewhat fits you. Nevermind if your in a time crunch for a specific item, for example clothing for interviews. Also factor in that for most second hand places, especially online, you cannot return merchandise. If your budget is tight, it might not allow the chance to purchase something that "might fit".
@GravityFallsUp
@GravityFallsUp Жыл бұрын
@@the-book-devourer8856 how many interviews are you all going to? I’m seriously wondering because that’s the excuse I always hear. You need a new outfit for every interview? You didn’t know you’d need nice clothes before your interview? I get things definitely happen, but I find it really hard to believe that people are needing that many professional clothes in a short time span. Learning your measurements and messaging sellers will solve any “might fit” problems as well. And these issues of it possibly not fitting, not arriving on time, etc. are all thing straight sizes also deal with. There’s lots of options out there, and I feel a lot people are just refusing to actually take the time to explore them.

@@GravityFallsUp I think unless you live in a larger body its hard to understand. I believe the most sustainable thing a person can do is just consume less. You can absolutely have a maximalist look to your home, while creating it in an eco minimalist way! My home is considered quite trendy in terms of looks, but all of the furniture is solid wood (so durable) and thrifted. 95% of the home decor is thrifted or homemade. It took a while to put together, since you need some luck with second hand goods, but I love the result and plan on keeping it this way for a loooong time.

Totally agree. I hate all the planned obscelessence and the coffee table for this apartment will come from a charity shop that sells furniture. I got my timber coffee table second hand on facebook marketplace from the person who built it for $30. It's so solid you could literally park a car on it... which makes it heavy to move (I've only had to move it twice and I'm hopefully in my forever unit now), but it will never need to be replaced.

This is true to an extent, but I also find it weird how people treat ikea furniture as disposable. I got an Ikea desk in 2016 that has been with me through 6 moves and I expect to have that desk for at least a few decades. Whilst it doesn't have the longevity of truly quality pieces, I haven't had to be super careful with it to get it to last. I wouldn't buy from ikea again now that I'm better informed, but I don't understand what people are doing to their ikea stuff that it's falling apart so quickly.

People love to debate if it’s up to corporations/governments or individuals to change their ways. I feel like the real solution is best depicted by California during the heat wave last summer. The grid was about to fail so they sent out a desperate text message to areas saying “reduce power usage now!” The result was that the issue was resolved in the next 15 minutes by people turning their appliances off. So really the solution has to come from both groups. Individuals have to take action, but we also need corporations/governments to help us understand the best places and ways to take that action. Thanks for including the UN report and framing the video around that!

Thank you! This is the kind of real talk, callout-without-being-unkind, messaging we need right now. Too many "sustainability" efforts get subsumed into ways to excuse or obscure behaviors as they develop (educating folk that a majority of pollutants come from corporations devolves into 'what can I even do lol I'll stop buying eyeshadow palettes when the industrial complex is toppled' mindset). We're really skilled at justifying what we want to do regardless of what we know. It's good to be reminded that things can change and be different, and we have the individual and collective power to do it. I've actually been glad to see maximalist aesthetics taking off. So much of it is built around gathering amazing objects and textiles you love from vintage, antique, and other thrifting, a slow assembly of stuff, rather than the flatpack "minimalism" that's within most people's reach. Anything that reminds us how many treasures are already out there to find and appreciate is great by me.

Yes! A huge portion of the incalculable harm of consumerism and capitalism is instant gratification. You know why my house and personal style are cool and unique and also more ethical? Because I didn’t just place a next day delivery order for a bunch of random shit I didn’t actually like to follow a trend. I was patient and collected it over years and years when I could and in whatever capacity I could afford to (along with mending and making skills). IMO it’s so much better and cooler for that reason, and it’s literally a point of pride rather than what was once shame for having only mended and secondhand things. Part of the inner work we all need to be perpetually doing is reflecting on our entitlement in a world that *wants* us to spend at other peoples and the planets expense at every opportunity.

I think that one of the biggest hinderances to anti-consumerism is rampant advertising. People are exposed to thousands of adverts every single day - manufacturing wants, needs, desires and insecurities at an alarming speed. I feel like people are not fully responsible for their own consumption habits, it's psychological warfare almost, this onslaught of advertising which is largely inescapable. I believe they call this "manufactured consent". It seems like it's a choice to live this way, but its entirely manufactured by big business and extremely hard to get out of. I feel like we need systemic solutions to hyper-consumerism. What would happen if advertising was banned? What would happen if companies were forced to make products that actually lasted a lifetime? What if we had circular economies? What if we had tool banks and shared resources within our communities? These initiatives could be more effective than waiting for individual choices to lead an anti-consumer lifestyle.

We the people are the tail that wags the dog and we need to accept and step up to that responsibility. So excited to see this passionate and well-presented case for the importance of reducing our individual consumption (and gasp! degrowth) in addition to continuing to push for changes in corporate practices and regulations. We're inundated with messages that make us think consuming less is a form of deprivation and that is just not the case. Our lives become richer in so many ways once we have fewer things to shop for, maintain, clean, and obsess over. I especially appreciated how you underscored the triple bottom line in this video pointing out how other areas of our lives (and other people's) as well as the health of the planet will also improve when we reduce our consumption. What sounds more deprived in the long run - enduring the long-term health effects (to people & planet) of the aftermath of the chemical filled train accidents like the one in East Palestine, Ohio or keeping more money in your own pocket by not succumbing as much to all the messages of lack, scarcity, and insecurity our capitalist juggernaut is trying to fill your head with?

I definitely impulse buy sweets and candles, but I’ve done a good job quitting the candle habit! I’ve discovered I don’t actually like them much. I also consume more chocolate than I wish I did and since it is a very exploitative industry, one of my goals is to reduce my chocolate consumption.❤

Love to feel that fire within you! 🔥👏❤️ I could also talk/listen/advocate about this topic all day long. Several years back when the whole “zero waste movement” first started (which of course resulted in even more production of new goods…😒), I remember feeling completely awakened to the problem of production and consumerism and feeling so overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem (as you’ve explained here, it is a serious collective action problem due to its massive domino effect). Ever since that deep realization, shopping for anything (even secondhand) feels very arduous to me, because once you’re fully aware of the problem, you cannot unsee it.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOUUUU JESUS *CHRIST* I’m SO glad this popped up in my recommended- I have been saying this for years and especially recently (as someone with both a maximalist house and wardrobe) and people still can’t get over themselves and reflect on it. I’m so, so grateful to see someone with a platform making the call outs that need to be made. Actual poor people by far and away don’t and have pretty much never relied on fast fashion to clothe themselves (unless they’re the people in the countries whose garment and textile industries we’ve decimated by dumping our shit) and it’s such a piss poor excuse from middle+ class western people trying to justify an addiction to consumption. It’s not our fault for being subjected to and initially falling for the trap, but it absolutely is our responsibility to claw ourselves out of it rather than continuing to deflect blame and harm the most marginalized people and environments in the world.

This video could not have come at a more appropriate time. I'm taking an anthro/sustainability class this semester and we're finishing up our section on consumerism and this hits the nail on the head. It's sad that the US's economy has been built to be so fragile that if we stopped shopping, or severely slowed down, there would be problems. My vice with shopping has been band tees or shirts that represent something that I like. Be it a show or a comic series.

"it's justifying exploitation in the name of your personal style and it's not acceptable." thankyou. we need to do better. if we accept this we are denying one of the core tenants that make us human - our resourcefulness. Pursue THAT rather than fast fashion and you'll feel far more human.

I used to impulse buy makeup. I'm so ashamed that I let trends, my fantasy self, and the rude comments in high school (I was in colorguard and the only time I wore makeup at school was before parades and shows, just so we had less to prep and some people would tell me "you don't look half bad when you have makeup on". I had accumulated so much I don't even know what to do with, to this day. I don't want to just get rid of it, but I also know it's more than a life times worth

I did this too... I didn't buy what most people would consider lots, but way more than I actually used, and I was also gifted a lot. I found a few people on Facebook marketplace who wanted my old nail polishes, make up, unused skin creams etc - hopefully it stopped them buying a new item while they used it up.

I'm a guilty consumer of cheap dollar tree/ Target dollar spot home decor. It's sooo cheap and looks good. There are so many videos and whole communities of stay-at-home moms doing all these crafts using cheaply made China-imported goods to be able to dress their homes on a dime. The majority of the demographic of this content seem to be middle-low income families who aspire to the higher end side of home interiors but can't afford it. It's a tough situation because on one hand this is their outlet and means to make their home homey but the products are for sure not sustainable.

I used to impulse buy unnecessary skincare and makeup all the time. Now I barely wear makeup and rarely change up my skincare. I will basically replace skincare if I am out of something. If I have to declutter a product because it's expired, it makes me question why if I would buy it again if I can't use it up before the expiration date. It's wild to see the difference in how much makeup and skincare I have from even 4 years ago!

As you said in the beginning, maximalists can be eco-minimalists, and I think that's true. I think a lot of the quirky fashion folks or interior design folks thrift A LOT because you can't find those same unique things now a days.. I think I impulse buy plant stuff the most. I feel better about where I am in that though. I found all my seed starting trays used this year and buy the majority of my new plant items / plants from a local nursery that does awesome thinks for the planet and community.

I really love the message of "do both" - advocate and organize towards big changes, but also do the best you can to live an ethical life on an individual level. I've spent some time being perplexed at folks who just do the former (when they also have the privilege to make the latter choices as well), like, what do you think will happen when these big changes are made, that you can keep consuming in the same way you have been? That you can accumulate as much slow fashion as fast fashion when that's all that's available?

Voters are consumers as well. We vote as a consumer with our dollar and as a citizen voter with our votes each and every election. We have the power, that is why so much money is spent each and every day to try and convince us that government is not effective. When we believe in the power of our vote we vote for those who actually make the changes we want to see. We then demand those changes happen. It is only when we divorce ourselves from OUR government that we allow it to be used to only benefit the few. Congratulations on your council seat, I love to see people being the change they want to see.

My weaknesses are/were makeup and stationary. I am working on the stationary addiction. Makeup- I am on a no buy until I use up most of what I have. I am "project panning" my oldest makeup, and doing a monthly makeup bag for the rest so it gets cycled through (not neglected or forgotten, which makes it easier to stick to the no buy).

One thing I didn't hear you mention about this issue with consumerism is also the email lists and carbon footprint that happens after you buy a product. I would love to see you touch on this at some point because it is something that goes unmentioned/unnoticed. If people were aware and could do a small/free change such as making sure to unsubscribe after they buy a product it could have a much larger impact on these emissions.

something that i'm still trying to work on but is an environmental flaw of mine is having exceptions. my favorite clothing brands are urban outfitters and pacsun, so I will let myself "slide" if I happen to want something from either of those stores. also, painting my nails. i've had my nails painted pretty much all the time ever since I was growing up. it's super hard for me to give that up, because that's how I like to accessorize

Hi, 👋😊 I like your videos about sustainability. I always have a dilemma. I live in third world country and many people here become a merchant and work in informal sector (not in corporation, or 9-5 job). I know I have to consume less and not buy the things I don't need. But, my country is not rich and I know that some people are really struggling, so whenever I can, if i have more money, i try to purchase food or goods from street vendor and support small business. I always think no matter how small i can help them and contribute to their livelihood. So i still buy unnecessary things because you know sometimes it just sad to see vendors or merchant when they don't sell anything for a day....i always feel bad to buy more stuff but I hope it can help others if i buy something from them. I've been thinking from my point of view, will less demand mean less job? I mean I'm all for the climate and sustainability but somehow I begin think about people who may lose their job. I'm sorry if I didn't get the message. Thinking about sustainability always confuse me because whether we like it or not, we live by consuming.

Affordable clothing is secondhand clothing! I began shopping second hand a few years back. It takes patience to find that one thing you may "want" but in the meantime you can take something else out of the waste stream till you find it. As for home decor, I find lots of ",stuff" to change out for the seasons or I have even taken to making some items I love. Those items are saved or gifted. It sparks creativity that our culture is quickly loosing. (Sigh)
