The people of Malaysia are so friendly today we experienced true Malaysian hospitality.
We headed to the small food court/hawker center above the fresh market in Taiping for some breakfast.
We ate soft boiled eggs on toast and tried 'Hor ka sai' which is a local specialty around Taiping consisting of black coffee mixed with milo.
The people we met here were so kind Malaysian people really have surprised us so far. The Chinese family next to us kept giving us free Malaysian snacks to taste - they make you feel like family here.
To end the day we went to try Taiping's famous fried bananas at PSL Goreng Pisang. Again the owner of this shop was incredibly friendly and the fried Malaysian snacks were were delicious.
This is how they treat you in Malaysia! One of the friendliest most welcoming countries in the world 🇲🇾

As a chef myself the Chinese new year cake is Glutinous rice cake which was steamed in brown coconut sugar, traditionally wrapped in banana tree leaf maybe sometimes they put pandan(south east Asian vanilla LOL) in it. The cake would be very hard when its cold. when its fried the becomes gloopy. Its always sandwiched between a piece of yam(taro root) and sweet potato.

Most of the Chinese community in Perak that open a coffee house are of Hainanese decent ethnic group, during the British time they used to be the cook for British gentlemen club, colonial hotels and British colonial officers home, so many of their "traditional" dish are actually inspired by British food with some local flavor added, so its an Anglo-Malayan dish mostly.

The sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf is lepat udang or pulut panggang. Sticky rice stuff with prawn, sometimes fish floss. Some sweet, some make it spicy. Then grill on fire, charcoal or pan. Usually can find it in the mornings. The modern ones use stapler to wrap the banana. Old school use tooth picks or wooden stick.

You have such a tradition too. The.cake is a molasses cake made from equal weight of glutinous rice flour n brown sugar n steamed for hours. It is served to the kitchen god when he goes to report on the family's behaviour during the year. It is hoped he will only say sweet words! In d ongoing friendly competition between msia n Singapore about food, much has been said about city food. But if they retain all these old,.traditional foods, I'd say they win hands down! I've been to Taiping but only visited temples, not food courts. I must make another visit soon.

Actually, there are stories about this sticky rice cake. Traditionally, it is made before the Lunar New Year as an offering to the Kitchen God, who returns to heaven for the new year celebration on the 24th day of the 12th month. Before the kitchen god returns, the sticky rice cake is offered. The cake is sweet in taste. So, the people hope when the kitchen god returns,he will report to heaven only good things on earth. Another version is, the cake is sticky. So, after the kitchen god eats it, his mouth will be glued, so that he will not be able to report anything bad about the happenings on earth. The People are very cunning, right? But, in actual fact, these stories make the festive celebration more interesting and meaningful.

I'm enjoying your video, Ellis WR, very organic.16:52 the white layer is yam (a type of tuber), the brown sticky stuff is 'nian gao' (chinese new year cry cake). 'nian gao' is made from mixed batter (glutinous flour + caramelised sugar + white sugar + water) steamed. Fried Nian Gao recipe - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ba2UYMl-say4ZIk.html. 19:52 the winter-melon and brown sugar drink is not just any random drink, it has medicinal value - helps to cool you down in hot weather (may be that's the reason why she suggested that drink for you) White people can't stand heat, right?

kali pok? xD. its curry puff actually...its Manglish or Malaysian English. When the Brits came here they see that stuff and dont know what to call it so they called it Curry puff, its actually Anglo-Malay-Indian dish, its the British who introduce us to the pastry and then the local Malay and Indian put Malaysian style fillings with curry paste added, so the Brits called it curry puff, in traditional Malay we call it EPOK-EPOK or clams like. Cuz it look like a clams xD.
