If you just bought a new finger spool, you may not realize it but you have to prep it before you can use it. This video covers how to prep a finger spool by removing excess line, rigging the bolt snap, and creating loops to easily attach it to a DSMB or lift bag. If you had trouble with using your new finger spool, watch this video to figure out how to set it up and store it so it doesn't unravel while you're diving, and it's ready when you need to deploy your DSMB or lift bag.

This is such good timing because I just bought a DSMB and spool for my dive next week! I watched your DSMB deployment in preparation for it too only to see the “how to prep” link still coming soon 😅 Thanks for this!

Sorry for the delay! I tried to get this done in tandem with the DSMB and had to redo a few parts. Happy you found it though! I updated the DSMB video to point to this one now that it’s live!

I would recommend feeding the line through the gate of the bolt snap after wrapping it around the back of the trigger. You don't even have to clip the bolt snap off to the spool at that point. It can just dangle. Best place to stow the spool: 1. In an easy to reach pocket. A thigh pocket is the best place but you can also use a BC pocket if you can get to it easily. 2. A butt D-ring. Not all BCD's have one, but if yours does, it's nice and out of the way. 3. A hip or shoulder D-ring. Keep an eye out that it doesn't dangle too far down or drags on a reef.

What I do now with new spools is I take the line off and make sure it's tied off to the spool .. found out the hard way when I dtopped my spool cause I am clumsy and it enrolled and fell off .. so now I always check and make sure it's tied . And before respooling it I mesure it to have the correct length..

If the sole reason for the spool was to launch a dsmb/lift bag, I am always connecting them together prior to the dive. Just way too much fumbling around when it's not necessary. Of course if the spool is used for something else, like jumping a line in a cave for example, its locked off. But even then, I don't pass it through the holes since it's really more trouble than it's worth. If there is a lost buddy situation, I don't want to hesitate in deploying my line and starting the protocol.

My dsmb is tied directly to my spool line, so it’s simpler but less flexible than your setup. Cool to see how different people do it.

If you clip the boltsnap back on the line rather than a hole on the spool, you get a safer connection that won't put additional stress on the boltsnap/spool if it gets stuck somewhere.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 7 ай бұрын
When I wrap the line around the bolt snap and then clip it off you mean? Where on the line would you clip it?
@tobiashartung856
@tobiashartung856 7 ай бұрын
@@CircleHScuba Exactly. You wrap the line around the boltsnap and then you clip the boltsnap through an eyelet. In the video you picked the eyelet on the opposite side from where the line feeds back. Instead of doing that, I would clip onto the line as it come from the last eyelet you fed it through. So the line comes through the eyelet of the spool, goes through the boltsnap, and then wraps around behind the gate, before the loop that the boltsnap is clipped off to initially. On that note, I also only feed the line out and not back through a second eyelet. I find that too fiddly for dry gloves.

@tobiashartung856 ah okay I see what you mean. Yeah this is how I do it, but little variations to make it your own is perfect imo. Good tips!

I use the spare line as a marker for my bolt snaps. I don’t recall the knot because my DM test was “the bowline is the only knot” 😂 Basically big loop along bolt snap length, start wrapping the working end around it, feed through the loop, sinch it tight from the other end to secure. Lighter to close it off. Tough to remove and you’ll know if a buddy grabbed your snap

Nice tip! Sounds like maybe two half hitches? Trying to visualize it haha.
@felipesanchezcuriel
@felipesanchezcuriel 7 ай бұрын
Great video. My two cents would be to add a single knot 3m (10ft) and two knots 6m (20ft) from the end, this comes handy for the safety stop.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 7 ай бұрын
I do like doing this as well but I do it at 6m/20ft only and if it’s a very long reel maybe different distance measurements. But that’s more use case specific haha.

Why not just leave the DSMB attached to the reel? If you know the sole purpose of the reel and DSMB is for signalling on ascent. Why add more steps by not having the reel attached? Also why use the girth loop instead of just attaching the double ender already on the DSMB.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba Ай бұрын
Double ender can come undone, technically, so I use the girth hitch instead. You can have the spool already attached but I was taught to keep it separate because you make be using the spool for something else. It’s okay to have it pre-attached imo though.
