Along time ago an instructor showed me a fun fact about ear “training”. He played a note and had me sing that note . I was to keep singing that note, but when he moved a semitone higher or lower, my voice would “follow” my ear and it was near impossible to stay on the original note. This is a confidence building exercise for your ear. Thanks for posting

STITCH! I haven't had the time to take a moment and thank you for all of the work you've done and do for the guitar playing community. For real I was told by someone about 3 years ago " the song sucks and I don't want to play it." Now granted I wrote it lyrics and music and I had never taken a lesson or even understood the caged system I was a chef and I played guitar. At that point I was no longer a chef and my guitar and music is what I had as a rock to keep me grounded and strong all the good things that music does it saves lives. I decided that day to learn how to "play guitar" from scratch actually watch a lesson and practice until proficient. The caged system all the 5 shapes of the pentatonics 3 notes perstrong scales circle of fifths (in the shallow end but I understand theoretically and practically basics of it.) You were the first KZfaq guitar teacher sage awesome mellow dude I stumbled on You're master classes and the basic lessons are AWESOME!! if not for you STITCH and the rest of the guitar education community giving so much of their time to help others play guitar better. THANK YOU! You're channel has been invaluable to me. PS my music nor my guitar playing doesn't "suck" with many hours practicing your lessons. Have an awesome day 🤟🏼

Thank you Stich, for all that you do! You’re one of the few Internet guitar instructors that have been able to help me progress. Ironically I also watch Sean Daniels. You’re both quirky and unique in your teaching styles. I found both of you individually and then figured out that you know each other. There are literally thousands of online guitar teachers and two of my very favorites know each other!?!

Hi Stich, this is a great lesson. You show how to find notes by ear! I think the technology of guitar tuners certainly changed things. I started playing guitar in 1965 where we used a tuning fork to tune a string then tune the rest to each other, then we would put a record on once again learning by ear. I tell students to spend time with tech but also spent time training your ear, thanks for all your great lessons…

Mr Stich, in my humble opinion, you are the best guitar teacher on KZfaq. You have a very special ability to communicate esoteric guitar playing information, theory and philosophy, in an easy to understand, affable manner . Great lesson, generally I can find the key in a few seconds and normally I would have departed at that point in the lesson thinking I was already familiar with the material being covered but for the reasons I stated above I decided to watch the rest of the lesson and found I had learned something by the end. Thanks!!!!!

Isn't it funny how weird people get when trying to sing/hum a bit just as an exercise? NOBODY expects one to sound like Michael Jackson and so no one cares what the "quality" of the singing is like. It is just a demonstration of the method and sounded great for what it is designed to do. Great video.

Nice job! I wish I had seen this video 40 years ago. L O L I learned how to do this with Christmas carols. The melodies are drilled into our psyche, and they resolve within only a few measures. this is really the fundamental of being a musician, yet, no one really teaches this.

seriously as soon as you said bored out of your mind, i came back to reality after having my mind blown by this method. Of the countless videos ive watched in regards to ear training, learning melodies, chord tones, and such, this is by far the most helpful. If you don't mind would you be able to name a few good songs with not to terribly difficult melodies, vocal or otherwise, that would be decent to practice with? If not its all good man, either way you are awesome! You've helped me a bunch with just this. Keep up the good work man and thank you!

As always. Great lesson Ian. You should do a few of these because this is the paramount method of ear training. Maybe do a lesson like this for Pink Floyd's, "Wish You Were Here?" I actually tried that about a month ago and had trouble. Especially with Gilmour's vocal slides within a single word or syllable. In your songs so far, each syllable had a corresponding note. However, in "Wish You Were Here," there are syllables that have two notes. For example, "So you think you could tell. Heaven from HE-LL...". I had trouble with the slides on the word, "Hell." Peace Doug

I'm more a fingerstyle ukulele guy these days, but I wanna echo this whole lesson. This is pretty much exactly how I go about arranging for ukulele. I'll look at a chord progression and then start noodling through those shapes looking for a musical/comfortable way to tease the melody out of them.

I’m pretty beginner, the only thing I recall from my lessons is 1st position C, a few open chords, bar chords and pentatonic scales and a little about theory. I watch my friends play chords all over the neck and then I don’t even know where to start.
