Anchored in the great salt pond on Block Island we looked forward to Mario, The Baker would come around in his Boston whaler with delicious baked goods. We knew he was coming because he would sing Italian opera which carried across the still water beautifully.

You can put a screw in button snap thru the Velcro in the corners of the screens. This takes the strain off the Velcro adhesive so it won’t come undone in the heat.

Lots of jobs to do but your both living the good life in Mexico! Those screens are going to be much appreciated in lots of the south pacific. Great job on thinking it thru on the lines, chafe, lubricant, etc. Hopefully you'll never need that third reef point but if you ever do you'll be mighty glad you worked it out beforehand! Enjoy every day! Departure getting closer!

The lazy sheet can also be used to stabilize the pole. Extra crew=good idea. I know it is a big expense but a spare drive that bolts right in(exactly the same as your new one) for the AP would never be a regret if you needed it!
@CalicoSkiesSailing
@CalicoSkiesSailing 4 ай бұрын
Yes we have a spare drive but are debating getting another brand new one. We have two slots in our rudder arm so I could possibly have parellel drives that would only require wiring in the solnoid coil and drive engage

Great idea replacing the screens, if there is one thing in common among the multiple sailing channels I've watched in French Polynesia this year it's the complaining about bugs and bites... French pastries delivered, boy I'd get real spoiled by that, you'll miss those when your out there in the doldrums floating around... lol

Cowabunga dude, surfs up. I had a 3rd reef in the main, It was rigged with a block on both sides of the boom. It was too heavy to keep in place all the time. I ran a messenger light line through the rig, so if needed a proper line could be pulled through to use the reef. I sold the boat before I ever had to rig it for weather that bad. Find a storm sail instead.
@CalicoSkiesSailing
@CalicoSkiesSailing 4 ай бұрын
Thats a good tip! Get some messenger line run in, it would add a lot of weight and line keeping the third reef permenantly run

While you're sailing around French Polynesia you should be getting enough solar that you should be able to run the A/C without burning any fuel.

Hi Guys, great episode. I am also changing up my reefing lines. Switching from 14mm to 10 mm polyester covered dyneema core. My Lagoon 46 reefing lines have been troublesome, hoping the 10mm will keep the issues to a minimum. Crossing the Atlantic, we battled with jams, tangles, etc. I'm using a split line system on reefs two and three. Reef 1 is single line reefing , while reefs 2 and 3 are split, one each for luff and leech. Installed an extra winch and clutch on the starboard side to do this. Haven't been planning to cross the Pacific, but you guys are making me think differently! What reef lines are you using now?
@CalicoSkiesSailing
@CalicoSkiesSailing 4 ай бұрын
Our reef lines are traditional braided lines. I don't think our main is generating the loads of your Lagoon 46 haha. We've moved most of our reefing procedures to the deck. I like it to keep it simple and the least amount of friction so moved the main halyard to the mast and not run to cockpit. We also use reef cringles for the tack. I like to have to occasionally go forward, good to keep a visual on whats happening around the boat. Come play in the Pacific!
@markbernier8434
@markbernier8434 4 ай бұрын
That little leather keckling you made needs a stitch through the line or it will slip. Also, you never said why the reef lines chafed. Did you address whatever the actual cause was?
@CalicoSkiesSailing
@CalicoSkiesSailing 4 ай бұрын
Yes I did run a stitch thru the line. Not sure what caused the chafe.

I the form of cash and presents in exchange they watch your videos like they watch TV ! They treat the KZfaq channels like rock stars ! I don't think I'm jealous of them but more in amazement of them and there life styles ! I'm not aiming this comment towards you but more towards the bigger channels like Vice Grip Garage and Sailing La Vegabond and there 2 million dollar boats and houses !
