Askelad was for Thorfinn a second father figure,even though he didn’t want to admit It to himself, and when he dies they recall to when Thor’s died by doing the same fading white shot for both scenes. Such a masterpiece!

@@Sonofsun. Askeladd is Ash-lad, aske means ash in norwegian. And the name Askeladd comes from a folktale about a young man that is said to be god for nothing and only deals with ash, but ends up rising above his older brothers that was always favored by their parents. His backstory in the show is a more grim version of his backstory in the folktale, so while saying that his name is Ash-lad is not wrong per say, it would be the same as finding someone named Gabriel and calling them Jibril.

He knew but he wasn't one himself. That's why he always had Thors on his mind and it explains why he got frustrated at Thorfinn on their last duel. It wasn't only because he lost his friend it was because he couldn't find a single trace of Thors in his son.

Askeladd out there being the Dad-slayer first he kills his own dad, then kills thorffin's dad, proceeds to kill ragnar (canute's father figure) then kills canute's true father and last he himself dies in a suicidal attempt to protect his home and canute killing thorffin's father figure (himself, askelaad)

@mightdai74894 жыл бұрын
Him and Canute’s character development imo is even better than Eren Yeager. I’m on book 6 rn and I’m so hyped to get the next ones
@TomaTTC234 жыл бұрын
@@mightdai7489 yes they have outstanding character development, but better than Eren? That's a bit of a stretch IMO but still they (especially Thorfinn) have very good character development nonetheless
@mightdai74894 жыл бұрын
Toma TTC maybe not Canute but I definitely think Thorfinn. Eren had insane character development ever since he learned truth from seeing his dad’s past. He never cared about killing anyone anymore since he knows there’s been enough, which is why he wants freedom for all and is manipulating everyone. I think Thorfinn had better tho solely because he was an innocent boy who tossed into rage once his dad died. And the fact the he was basically raised by the guy who killed Thors which was arguably one of the best characters every is surprising since he hated him, yet when he died it’s like he lost another dad. Then in manga he is fed up with fighting like Eren, and is little by little trying to understand the words Askeladd and Thors has been saying, what it means to be a warrior. I’ve only read up to book 6 but the panels are mindblowing the dreams he has, and the huge resistance to fighting only when he needs to. Can’t wait to see the farm attack
@Icedmanta4 жыл бұрын
@@TomaTTC23 I think Eren Yeager has fantastic development through AoT's run, but Thorfinn's is more dramatic. Eren has always had the fighting spirit, the anger, the rage, but throughout the course of the story turned from blind rage to cold, calculated efficiency highlighted by the events in Marley. Thorfinn experiences the complete opposide, where he discovers himself after years of torment and rage to organically discovering peace within himself. The dramatic 180 Thorfinn undergoes is more impressive imo since it feels completely natural and beautiful, I didn't feel any sense of whiplash or sudden changes in his character that weren't justified
@villadavid19974 жыл бұрын
@@mightdai7489 It's an insult to compare Eren to Thorfinn or Canute. Eren has no development at all. He went from "I WANT TO KILL ALL THE TITANS" to "I WANT TO KILL EVERYBODY WHO IS NOT WITH ME". Is that development for you? Don't be ridiculous
@aerithenjoyer4 жыл бұрын
"That's gotta mean something" You mean the kid that was pure rage and whose only desire in life so far was to take revenge on the man that took his father's life dropping the knife? You know what, I think you're onto something. But in all seriousness that scene left me in awe the first time I saw it. The symbolism behind it and how it transitions from his past he let go to the future that awaits him was absolutely amazing. The artistic eye to make something like that is impressive.

@averagekobenienjoyer7639 Жыл бұрын
I know I’m late but Thorfinn dropping his knife was a symbol of him letting go of his anger and instead started to reach for Askeladd because I’m sure deep down, both of them had a type of affection for each other in a father/son way. Askeladd basically acted as a father figure for Thorfinn ever since he was a kid.

I agree it's because of Askeladd he cared for him in a way and raised to turn him into what his father was. I believe he was just a pirate but in heart or by watching Thors' death he knew what a true warrior actually is... And also tested Thorfinn when he didn't killed him while he was pretending to sleep.

In the moment that askeladd died was when thorfinn realized that askeladd had really become a second father figure to him.
@OrlandoDUG4 жыл бұрын
The part when he lets go of the knife is a representation of Thorffin letting go of his past, as you saw all the scenes of all that he’s gone through and him letting go of the knife is him leaving it all behind. So I’m guessing he stops looking for revenge and somehow connects through time with the people showed at the ending and starts a journey, seems the logical direction but idk, just a theory.

Real hard Endeavour vibes. After all those years blindly chasing one goal, numbing the emotions you don't need, then losing it. After not knowing what to do all those emotions come back and you can finally move on. Very real emotions in this episode and I appreciate you for it! Sadly I spoiled myself with Askeladds death just 2 episodes before watching since I scrolled through the comments under the OP song but the impact was still there. From the symbolism of the camera looking at Canute through the crown and Askeladd giving Thorfinn the last words he needs to hear from the "father" that took his father. Love this serious and am hyped for the slower arc coming in the future. Hopefully with the same production quality.
