I'm here because we have (had) a nest of Carolina wren hatchlings above our bedroom window. This morning, i saw a big black shadow fly on top of the window sill, and heard a crow cawing. I told my husband i saw a crow and no longer heard the little peeps. He said "that explains why i heard crunching earlier" They used to build the nest on top of our porch light, but 2 years in a row, they lost those babies. this year, they moved it. I know it's nature, but it's still depressing watching the mom look for her babies.
@mastergee2003 жыл бұрын
Crow saw the robin lay those eggs from day one,and just waited for mom to fatten them up 😋
@Tuberuser1873 жыл бұрын
I know its a joke but, I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually the case. Corvids are pretty smart, amongst the most intelligent birds and they kind of survey potential food sources around them when they settle into an area. You can even train them to come to feeding tables at certain times, certain days and they know and even set up puzzles for them to solve to get at food.
@henrikmonkee3 жыл бұрын
Yeah i bet he did, crow knows what's good.
@Spider-Man20943 жыл бұрын
@@Tuberuser187 I can definitely believe that. Waiting for them to be big enough to be a filling meal but also small enough that they can be carried off easily.
@Tuberuser1873 жыл бұрын
@@Spider-Man2094 In some of the many tests and experiments over Corvid intelligence they have shown they can do better than some children with the "you can take this one sweet now but if you can leave it on the table for 15 mins while I pop into into another room you can have a second" experiment, which even learning the concept of the experiment is a feat all of its own.

It's good that they start over. Reusing a old nest can lead to mites and ants finding it. Also, it might not be the best placed because other birds found it. Crows will remember the old nest.@@raccoon3440

I wonder if there is a way for Robins to know if they are building their nests in safe places? Obviously this wasn't a safe place for a nest. It seems to me crows can find any nest. I live in a large apartment building and house sparrows build nests in the tight space on the ledge underneath air conditioners. No bird can get to them. It's clever. I wonder why these robins built a nest in the open like this.
