I'm hear because I want to hear what THESE GUYS have to say about the news, because they're funny guys and usually offer genuinely different insight that I wouldn't have otherwise. Sidenote: I find it hilarious that anytime anyone tries to give Woolie responsibilities or even a small amount of praise, his immediate response is to fart into the microphone and try to convince us he's a hobo rolling around in garbage.

The biggest evidence of Steam's dominance in the PC market is that the sheer convenience that it provides everyone makes us not mind that all the games we are buying there are digital only. In a gaming culture where people condemn consoles for not releasing physical copies of their games, Steam completely bypasses it because it has proven to be more reliable than the computers we play the games on.

Pat is literally describing how Dictatorships worked in Rome. In 458 BC Rome was invaded, and one Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a simple farmer plowing his field, was forced by the city to become the Dictator with absolute control over the state until the crisis was over. And Lucius couldn't get rid of the position faster. In 16 days he was victorious over the invaders, and immediately told the senate "That's it I'm done" relinquished all power and went back to farming.

Reminds me of the Pope Fights video, on Overly Sarcastic Productions. The Papal Conclave took over two years to elect a new Pope, and the person they elected was just some random guy who said, "Elect a new Pope, you idiots, or you're all going to Hell!" The guy became Pope Celestine the Fifth, and the only thing he did during his time as Pope was make a rule stating he could quit, then quitting his new job as Pope.

Its why we have two terms for US presidents: Because Washington never wanted the job in the first place but won almost unanimously, after 8 years in office he said "Fuck it Im out". Its also what Sherman said about the possibility, to paraphrase "If I get nominated Im not accepting, and if I win Im not showing up to work"
@xkavarsmith9322
@xkavarsmith9322 3 ай бұрын
@@Kaarl_Millsand it was because of those eight years then willing to walk away that both astonished the entire world (including King George, who didn't think Washington had the character to do it) and set the mythos for America. The constitutional admendment limiting presidents to two terms, eight years total, was inspired by Washington's example. Washington is the only five-star general so nobody in the Department of Defense can outrank him, etc.

I haven't watched the clip yet but I listened to the episode (*edit* ah it's around 8:07 ). And I remember Woolie summarizing it well near the end as basically, he doesnt see himself as the news. And if you do, *wet fart sound effect*. Basically he's loudly saying, nope he's just reading stuff that interests him. If you wanna know the news check the description/notes on the podcast episode on your podcast feed. Or just listen for when he says the source. Or even better, just look up the story seperately lol. Unfortunately for Woolie, I and many others are comfortable not looking it up and trusting them. Because they do a good job of catching details and being thorough. Including adding in Twitter posts with additional context, and personal knowledge.

Or when the same thing happened when UGO bought EGM/1UP and killed them immediately. Woolies point about not covering certain types of games and news is kinda silly in my opinion. You can share information about specific topics and those interested in those topics will gravitate to you for that info. You could be a game journalist that only ever covers sega games or whatever, and if you’re good at it people will stay tuned. So, yeah, you don’t cover the whole spectrum of games, you never could! You’re just two dudes, but for what you DO cover you do it pretty well and have amassed a fanbase interested in those topics. I also feel like it gets to a point where it’s not even your choice anymore, if a majority of your fanbase give you a label i don’t think you can really stop it, kinda like genres such as souls-likes.

The refusal to acknowledge the responsibility is unironically how we ended up where we are. Not saying Woolie is a games journalist but its worth noting a lot of games journalists and journalists in other industries say the same kind of things and its interesting to see content creators (not just these guys) get big off covering the news but refuse to say they have any responsibility now that we're having discussions about corruption in the industry. Makes me wonder how long we have until we have real ass corporate owned content creators Creators absolutely arent just little guys talking about what they enjoy anymore, these are real jobs with real money behind them and while I watch CSB for the personalities more than the news theyre talking about this is a much bigger problem than them that they might get sucked into if it gets bad enough

Also the Jon Stewart problem isn't just a guy who wanted to make jokes about the news and was called a news source for it. It's that he used manipulative editing and other things questionable for a news source to do to make his jokes and said he doesn't have a responsibility around that because it's all just jokes, then he learned that it's not and he really does have a platform people not just laugh at, but learn from and changed the way he ran his shows to account for that

As someone who is legitimately a big fan of those in the "game journalism" sphere, I gotta say that most do not have the time nor the legal backing to pursue "journalism" in the way the word is traditionally used: Jason Scrhieier can, Patrick K used to at Vice, but for the most part that bloc has made the pivot to "games media"- this can include articles, video reviews, and especially podcasts. I regret to inform Woolie that he is absolutely in what I would call "Games Media". Could be worse: the supplement to the podcast isn't a half dozen of articles that flood the top search results because website ad revenue is in the toilet. Hooray for capitalism

I think games journalism as a subset of games media is an absolutely vital component for the long-term health of the medium and the amount of time that publications are given the chance to pursue actual games journalism is vanishingly small. Not by any fault of their own, but rather the SEO hellscape everything lives in. I think a lot of sites get a bad rap for chasing tabloid stuff and people are very quick to turn their noses up at specific publications, but the fact of the matter is that they're a means to an end and that a lot of these places are just trying to survive in a rapidly shrinking space. Despite plenty of claims to the contrary, I think it would be disastrous for games journalism to die out in favour of influencer-style games media

Jason Scrhieier is a bigot, though, so I wouldn't trust him as a news source. This is the man who publicly got upset over a small game studio posting a picture of their team online because they were all white men. He literally tried to shame them for being white. He clearly can't be trusted to give unbiased information, since he's the sort of person who will leave out anything that conflicts with his personal politics.

I'm just going to use this video to sort of defend their initial Mighty No 9 take because everyone was saying that. Yeah, it's only a dumb thing to say in HINDSIGHT. We had no reason at the time to think the game would be a disaster of that level, you'd think that making a Mega Man game would be easy for someone who worked on Mega Man games previously. Nowadays, we know that Inafune really can't be credited with the creation or success of Mega Man in the past, but most of us were still enamored with him back during the Kickstarter, and we were also just desperate for a new game.
