They brought Balatro to Mac so I’ve finally had the pleasure of playing for myself. Just had a crazy run in my third ever that started as pants and DNA and ended with a Steel Joker at x4.75, Hologram at x6.75, Constellation at x4.2, Baseball hitting 3 uncommons and a Campfire to top it all off. Would’ve beaten Ante 12 if I realized I was against the boss blind that only lets 1 hand type before playing High Card. I would like to apologize for any past Type A chats, because dang is it easy to make even a glaring mistake like that.

He's right about the straights. It's way too hard to scale and needs a buff. Maybe the planet should give more mult and chips or get some more powerful jokers to make the effort worth it. Sacrificing a joker slot or two to make straights easier without any other benefit is too limiting to be worth while.

I think a straight deck is perfectly playable. You use either four fingers or that gap joker as a transition until you have a deck that can reliably give you straights. make them a single suit and pick a range of numbers you want to focus on and straight flushes become easier than you'd think.

@@Almaburger They want buffs because they're objectively worse. You can obviously win with them but ideally the power level would be scaled with the difficulty or ease of enabling them. Like just based off raw statistics alone they are worse.

Just seen a previous stream where you seemed surprised that people found you through Balatro. Just came to let you know that I had as well. Love the game and you make streaming it fun and so enjoyable. As a 30 something father, I relate so much to the discussions. You're such a funny and smart person and I appreciate that. I look forward to more balatro. Also my son wants me to watch new backpack battles videos since it's release so I'm gonna need you to get on that 😂

Not at all. Just take note of what you're deleting and stack the deck with high cards and delete low ones. A wild rank would go insane tho

You could perhaps add a tarot card that similarly to a Wild Card adds a property to a card so that the card acts as itself + a rank above it + a rank below it. For example you add this to a 6 which can then act as 7-6-5. If you have an Ace, 2, 3, 4 and a 6 with this property it would count as a 5. Or if you have a J,10,9,8 this card would count as a 7

My steel card strategy is always to put steel on the off-suit fed off-rank first. It gives utility to non-playable cards early and then can be fixed to the proper suit later in the run if you have a chance.

that moment when you would get 6 mult and extra chips for just playing a full house but you have to justify your steel card usage so you play a two pair which 1.5x's the 2 mult you get from playing a two pair resulting in 3 mult and less chips.

Legitimately, the concept of putting steel on cards you actually want to play because you can duplicate them and you still can play them in case of emergency has made the game even more enjoyable to play for me, so thank you for showcasing that so much in your Balatro videos. It's a plan that has both a higher floor and a higher ceiling. Higher floor because the worst case scenario is you play the steel card and actually play a decent hand rather than not playing the steel card and being forced to throw down a terrible high card while fishing for something better. Higher ceiling because if you ever do get on that magic run where you duplicate/convert your entire deck into steel cards, it's better if the one card you're copying is one you don't mind playing. Steel cards kind of make the game play a little less smooth if you're always putting steel on cards you won't play. You feel bad discarding it, but holding on to it doesn't advance your game plan either. Maybe, like, objectively speaking it's incorrect to put steel on cards you want to play. I don't actually know how the math breaks down. But from a pure game feel perspective I now put steel on cards I actually want to play and it's genuinely so much more enjoyable playing this way.

In terms of probability you got a pretty good chance of getting the one or two cards you need to finish your straights, but what the hell do you do to make them show up more consistently? Make more of every card? What do you delete? The only things I can really think of are shortcut and four fingers joker

it's kinda broken on abandoned deck though, just bulk up on the center cards (5,6) and drop as many cards on the edge (T,A) Can likely make 3 straights per round easily even without 4 fingers

14:30 I agree with NL here, it’s hard to work a straight build. I’ve managed a straight build once, and it was only by committing super early, nuts on the table style. I had to emphasize discards and hand size to maximize my chances of drawing a royal flush and even then I needed the jokers specifically tailored towards straights and flushes score to get it to Ante 11. You also have to win in basically one hand every time, because there’s no way you’re drawing 2 of them in one round 😅. Other builds are just more flexible and reliable early game and scale better I’d say even in the late game.

Trimming the edges works good but needs a ton of maintenace thats why checkerd deck is good or abandoned so you can cut down on a ton of excess

it’s about as easy to get as a flush but you have to focus on the numbers. it helps to delete cards from the lower end of the deck helping enable stronger straights

Maybe it could be rankless but it can fill holes, or add to the end, of straights. Like if you play 4, 5, 7, 8, X or 4, 5, 6, 7, X it would make a straight. That would be less op than a wild rank, since it only works on straights, and not be confusing by messing with all the types of modifiers.

Too OP to make it all ranks as it would be too good to enable 4/5 of a kinds (although would be a fun Legendary Joker that could enable it to work that way). I think that kind of rankless card + mult buff on Straight Planet Cards is necessary for its viability.

NL yapping fr. Saturn scales very well, making straights base chip/mult resonable. Same reason Jupiter scales like poo; flushes are the easiest 5 card hand you can play.
