MMO Ashes Of Creation's January Caravan PvP stream provided a lot of information and sparked a huge debate about attacker risk in the caravan system. Many AOC enthusiast felt the attackers in this process needed more risk for the reward they sought. After listening to a lot of takes around the community and analyzing footage from this showcase and the previous showcase, I feel what we saw wasn't actual real gameplay representative of a true caravan ambush due to key mechanics on the defender's side not being used; thus resulting in a downing perception of the system by some viewers and leading to fear mongering without us having yet to test the game.

I do hope this comment is sarcastic. PvE-only servers upend the very core essence of Ashes of Creation and nullify too many systems and gameplay loops.

I think everyone needs to pump the breaks and realize we have to wait and see how things are going to be once actual players can play. Not scripted scenarios. And yes, I've been screaming about the extra abilities the caravan itself is going to have, including healing, which was already OP with just player healing. In a even fight, 9 times out of 10 the caravan abilities are giving the defenders the edge.

agreed, as someone planning to run a caravansary guild, even if you ignore the caravan abilities and just consider making the caravan near impossible to break, my *STANDARD* caravan detail will be a total of around 20 players and can go up to a full 32 man depending on the money you wanna spend hiring more of my members as guard detail. the formation in particular is pretty cruel towards anyone trying to ambush the caravan especially considering that your average caravan heist party probably is going to be FAR smaller than the near 32 man ambush we saw in the stream because the seen at the end in the black market is how all those MASSIVE caravan ambushes will go and why they will never be that big to begin with anyways. full stop it will be tiny guilds of highwaymen and crimnals attacking making my formation of at least 1 line of 4 assassins (rouge/rouge) if not another line infront of or behind them to help have a extra wave of survelience with their pure motive till an ambush is sprung is to stay in complete stealth and remain undeteced and if they spot an ambush to inform the main caravan where then it will be decided after extra surviellence using falconers (ranger/summoner) to survey the ambush from above to see its full power and if either it can be pushed through and defeated OR if there is no real other way to go that doesnt add TOO much time to the caravan than the assassins and the rangers will move into position behind the enemies while remaining hidden with the rangers keeping a FAR distance with their at least 2 guardian (tank/tank) and 1 true cleric (didnt know the name but cleric/cleric) guard detail protecting them as well and making a better pincer for when the caravan arrives to spring the real trap being the healers and ranged dps being murdered by at least 4 if not 8 assassins while at least 2 rangers fire long range shots into the backs of their frontlines with the option of 3 summoners calling in 2 BIG monsters to crush any who remain.

add in the caravan abilities and honestly that highway man progression line steven mentioned better add some serious risk of the higher level highwaymen being able to steamroll your caravan itself and total the damn thing costing you 50% of all resources if you try that sort of risky maneuver or otherwise the attackers will be at such a loss that we risk no one ever trying aside from people during guild or node wars. also as a side note, with everything i said in mind and everything you also mentioned, it makes me annoyed people STILL think the attackers need MORE risk when they already are both at such a massive disadvantage AND thats also not considering the reputaion drop cause i 100% will keep a list of every damn person who has ever tried raiding my caravans and have asssassins to fuck over those who have attacked my shit until they know they better not try it on me again by having all members on any caravan run or at least al those in the main party of 8 that will be directly on the caravan will be recording with i also realized i forgot to mention what the group of 8 on the caravan will be with to quickly say it, 3 guaridans (tank/tank) 2 true clerics (again the cleric/cleric) 3 true summoners (also dont remember these guys names but summoner/summoner) with the summoners being dps focus'd so especially for those willing to fork over the big bucks to get the extra 6 summoners, thats 3 GIANT monsters to come barraling in from behind our 7 tanks split between both sides with absolutly no remorse for the slaugther that would be about to commince.........

@@R_o_o_k_i_n_g_t_o_n I personally feel caravans should/will likely be outnumbering groups randomly wandering open world. If there’s somehow an organized group of 20+ attackers then some spying or betrayal occurred. Between the defenders being better prepped, more organized, and having the utility of the caravan; I think a competent caravan escort hasn’t much to worry about on average

One thing I'll add. If you only invite trusted guild members defenders will be at a huge advantage. Chances are it's going to be pretty rare for full raid groups to be just sitting around hoping a caravan will show up. They'll have to first notice a caravan in the wild, gathering their members, and then catch everyone up to your caravan before you have the chance to unload your cargo. If your scouts start seeing signs of possible groups of attackers gathering simply offload at the next town. If it's not your final destination just give it an hour or so for the attackers to get board and continue on your way. Now if your foolish enough to join a guild that recruits using general chat and invites anyone to their caravan party you might get your caravan taken fairly regularly.

After more thought, I have come to the conclusion that caravan conflicts will be rarer than we realize. With the world size increase, player density dropped drastically. Without fast travel, grouping up will be harder. And even if you find one, having matching numbers will be much harder to achieve (leaving out family summons). So, I am waiting for A2, which will be more populated than the actual game will be.

Glad you gave it more thought cause I agree world size will be a huge factor and caravans in theory will be the most combatant dense/zergy not random attackers in the middle of nowhere

Another great video, Nyce! I think that we will see more of the other classes getting fleshed out and balanced. Can't wait to see what PvP is like when A2 is out and especially how a caravan run will actually feel!

Debate is good, but it seems pretty naive for anyone to expect an " unbalanced" and "scripted" broad overview tech/mechanics showcase to be representative of actual gameplay scenarios.

Caravans are always tough to balance properly. As you point out, it is alpha and their video was setup to demonstrate certain aspects. My latest thoughts are that I think nodes should be part of this mechanic, as in your start node and destination node have an incentive to 'help', and so citizens of those nodes can get something if they help the caravan if attacked. Or a node's citizens are incentivized to form groups to scout and/or clear roads, etc.. Ideally, most of the PvP happens away from caravans and in nodes that are not the start or destination (also helps with start/dest ganking). Something like that. Like in olden days, Kings/lords sent armed patrols to keep roads clear, etc.. Some mechanics for players/citizens doing that would probably help a lot. Maybe some 'pigeons' scout groups can send to caravans to warn of upcoming ambushes... there's lots of things they can do that are simple and effective. Really most players going for caravans will just want the PvP that happens, so if the system creates PvP away from caravans, that reduces the risk and also keeps PvPers happy.

Bro I play Albion Online and it is a full loot PVP game and has a lot trading between the cities and transport system similar to Ashes... Full PvP everywhere and when you learn about the system, you will may think that it would never work, but it works really nice. Even the game being 60% -70% being a PVP MMORPG, you can do PVE all day long and ignore a lot the PVP when you learn how to play... I think that maybe this caravan system in Ashes looks kind of too risk for PVE players and not enough risk to the Gankers now...but I am pretty sure that few weeks later or a month later they will balance, the hype will goes away and it will become very easy to transport with the caravan around... I am very sure that sometimes small groups it will transport many times during the night and it will not make a single fight.

This is probably the one time where scripted gameplay has backfired in the showcasing of the PvP combat. The combat being scripted meaning there's no player agency and all the combat we saw was just useless padding.

EXP and equipment durability loss should always occur when you die, even in PVP events. It just fits the more hardcore philosophy of the world of Ashes of Creation. It would also help keeping the economy more healthy, since people would need to craft and maintain new weapons even if they only PVP. Death should always feel like it really hurts you, so you always think twice on how you approach things.

Actually no thats the opposite It's already rubbed some ppl the wrong way with how punishment systems are working even outside pvp and this imo is a problem in the mmo community, y'all forget that these are mmos and meant to be fun. If I wanted that id just got play sekiro, or elden ring, pick a nioh Pvp is not a bad thing just because you dont like it theres a bigger demographic of ppl looking for balanced pvp than there is pvers. The industry has literally been pandering to y'all for almost a decade now pvp getting something wont kill you. Third of all this will always never work because all the older mmos that we look back to when we say pvp had durability functions waaaayyy harder than what you described. No ones going to be smiling about gear they paid 200 piece each getting shattered and becoming unusable. We stopped liking even that system after a while because no if pvp is the only reason i play then youre not about to make me double grind. Like no i take pride in my creation so either customization is about to be bland asf or somebody got me fucked up cause I'll be damned if im gonna put time to the side to min max my gear and i have to do it all over again just because ppl like yall dont like pvp. Theres a reason as to why GW2 had the biggest pvp community in mmos for a bit. 1 its about skill your gear means 0 in pvp and everyone's effectively the same level. Youre only argument against that is that the pve and pvp are seperated and can't interact with eachother however it shows all motherfuckers want with some oldies tossed in here and there, but to punish me so heavily because of how I like to play? Yeah no youre crazy as hell Like ight bet whatever armor and weapon degradation system we have in pvp should reflect in pvp. Meaning that dungeon boss can break your shit no different than when we face eachother Whatever they apply to pvp should be %100 applied to pve I'm tired of everyone trying so hard to make pvp unworth it Like I don't get how y'all dont realize that with these attitudes towards it y'all creating what you wanted to avoid My best example is an old one called 4story 1 if many that actually did what youre suggesting Yeah we worked twice as hard to keep our shit up however as a trade off planned zergs were more prevalent from both sides and when it was a zerg no one cared about what level you were you were just dead keep in mind it was considered p2w even back then so no ones armor at 80 was some ole bullshit if you wanted to glow like a lava lamp and compete you had to drop a couple 100s in real money and that's just for a +20 weapons not a whole gear set Now look at how zergs work in wow, you dont need real money to upgrade your shit it will lose durability but zergs were less normal Pvpers were less penalized in wow than 4story by a long shot yet random unwanted pvp was less frequent like nah bruh yall tripping

Can't you have decoy caravans (with minimal loot) where the guards don't trigger pvp thus giving corruption to the attackers?

No. You can have decoy caravans or empty ones, but it’s still subject to being a mobile PvP objective

Lets hope this is how the game goes. So tired of mmo's giving flag systems or making it possible for people to stay in pve only. Have pve modes, pve events, some pve things like dungeons to walk into, but never ever take away the ability to snipe people gathering, or gank somebodys group while theyre hunting, things like this are what help create a true mmo experience. Dealing with griefers, Building communities, having guilds genuinely raid and defend operations to further their plans and growth. I dont have to be able to loot the people I kill, but I should be able to always stop them from farming a resource node, because Im after that node.

ive already said my piece probably too much in your comments recently so ill just say that if anyone wants to see my take as a guy looking to make a caravansary guild, @Irishsage2459's comment in this section has my take there but one thing i did wanna excentuate about why nyce is right here so massively is the end of the stream in the black market when the 'joke' was made which in this case WAS a joke but in the game would be VVEEEERRRYY much so less of one.... it was the moment when steven was asked "so wheres our cut?' and everyone started to line up. like paying for 32 people to get a GOOD and WORTHWHILE cut is gonna be hard when your getting the caravans FULL loot and not the 50% after the original caravans destroyed and a new one is made with worthwhile in this case meaning that they make MORE money than if they were farming for resources or making processed goods or gear or shit... full stop most highwayman will be likely in SMALL guilds to try to get small guild bonuses and cause no one will wanna associate with known highwaymen outta fear of bigger merchantary guilds like mine being peeved off with anyone who would readily play with people attacking our caravans and trying to steal our goods AND in these guilds, comradarie is likely to be in short supply as there will be a lot of in fighting about fair cuts of the stolen goods and heavy back and forth about who did what and earn what AND if they try to pull in a lot of people for it at once than just watch as they rip themselves to shreds over any loot they can get probably popping crates open on the spot and than kiling eachother outta anger for either taking the stolen goods certificate THEY were gonna take OR popping open crates and HEAVILY dropping the total profit that could be earned here.

@@Nyce-Gaming that is a fair point as the smaller avalible zone will make fore more choke points and likely less developed places where bridges and roads can pop up as of course, they would still be getting worked on. ultimately i will say i feel like caravan attacking is gonna be something done when one of two things happens. 1) a big guild with a bit too much confidence and either info from a spy or info perhaps from a annoyed person who maybe was kicked from their guild, decides to go raid a caravan they heard would be LOADED or 2) guilds and node armies stratigically killing caravans and either stealing what loot they can or INTENTIONALLY despawning and destroying all the loot in order to cripple a guild castle or node as a siege is inbound and prevent them from building siege equipment and repairing and making armor.

Yes, this was a prestaged scripted scenario to demonstrate the the Caravan System. You are reading too much into this video which was NOT scripted. The Caravan System was NOT designed to transport goods. Per Steven: The Caravan System is designed to promote open-world PvP in the game. The Caravan system is fine as it is. No player in their right mind will ever transport goods by Caravan in the game. There are faster and less risky ways to transport your goods. (Read the WIKI).

Nope. Caravan definitely not intended to transport goods to bolster economy. All of that caravan storage allowing you to transport goods that a character can’t carry to another node that does not have access to that type of resource was entirely something I must have dreamed up
