I will never understand people who own old homes don't take the time to use the right products to keep up the house. You are doing an amazing job of doing it the right way. Its obvious how much you love your home. So good to see Kim❤

One thing I've realized living in an old house is people don't even know that they don't know what they are doing. It's young bucks like Kaleb that have the wherewithal to use this amazing tool called the internet to learn about anything and everything.

A lot of neighborhoods with older housing stock are low income. Not everyone has the means to do things the correct way. Thats why St. Louis city fell to the ground because people with time and money moved out to the suburbs in brand new homes that don’t require costly upkeep.

I have an old home and honestly, it's just not talked about, and you bring contractors in, and they just suggest using modern items. I have had to do research. Another issue is it can be incredibly expensive and in my area we are poor or lower class. It can be hard as well with disabilities and other mental health issues to upkeep. Again, this is primarily in my older neighborhood of where we live. We are fixing up our home slowly but we have to use more modern items with antique feel.

You don't know what you don't know, and up until recently with the internet and being able to look things up, you had to rely on whatever handy man or self-proclaimed expert showed up to fix a problem.

I love that tap with the bird. You are doing great work and I can't wait to see the house after a few months of warm weather. We really need to save these historic houses,. These older well built houses will outlast the newer ones.

I have an 1894 Victorian which I have lived in my whole life. 63 years. I have restored it to its original condition. I was blessed that my folks and grandparents never altered it or ripped any of its original assets out. They just painted all the interior oak woodwork which I painstaking stripped. I am almost done with the exterior which I stripped all the paint off. Repaired and replaced lost ornamental woodwork. Of course I will have to repaint the first side I did and so on. You have bought back many memories although I did not have to deal with fixtures ripped out or the deterioration you have. You are saving a piece of architectural art for the world to enjoy. Thank you.

Once the exterior foundation is cleared of concrete I'd suggest coating it in a lime render to protect the pointing and stonework. The interior walls should be lime washed. It'll brghten the room and protect the pointing while remaining breathable. The extra benefit of rendering and lime washing is that it fills in small air gaps.

So exciting that you were able to find the right NHL mortar for the foundation. I was pulling my hair out trying to find it before I realized that I have a very early 1910 concrete foundation.

I love the quale tap, but I'm concerned about the winterization and such. It appears to not have a vacuum breaker and isn't a frost-free type. You can get screw-on vacuum breakers no problem, but for winterization, I would recommend you put a valve on the water line before it goes into the wall so that you can isolate and drain it to prevent it from freezing damage. (I may not be a plumber, but I'm from a town a few hours away and had a hose bib freeze and burst in the same type of weather that you get.) Either way, it's amazing to see the life you're bringing back into that house, I have been watching since the trailer came out and hope to visit one day. 👍

Only problem with the quail tap is to remember to winterize it every year for winter and the water line from the inside otherwise it'll freeze and break.

While tuck-pointing a basement wall may be a bit tedious, you are using the correct material, and the benefits will last a long time. Nice plus that the dried mortar reflects more light. Stair repairs ASAP!! Like Kim, I don't like heights, and am always wary of a tumble down the stairs. Cool to see the Vulcan statue, and glad it is still standing after all these years. It makes absolute sense to adjust your schedule to get the most work done where you can, depending on the weather. I had a bird handle spigot for years. That shape is not only cute, but also ergonomic! Fits well in the palm of your hand. :)

I have a special request~~~Can you please film a video of you scraping out the old mortar between the stones, and prepping the wall for the new mortar? I had a stone feature wall added to the back of my house outside my back door, and now, 4 years later, the "stone bricks" are starting to drop to the ground. So I wondered how he glued his rock pieces on. I guess Type 0 Mortar was what he used.

Focussing on your basement workshop makes perfect sense. Functionality in your workshop will mean faster progress on the pretty stuff. The actual engine room. Given that you will be using power tools and machines in there, having water, power and ventilation is essential. Love the quail tap.

One time I took a brass tap in the shape of a frog to Belgium, the UK Customs officer ran my bag through her X-ray machine, she asked me what it was, I said what does it look like? (She wouldn't let me look at her screen), she said it looks like a tap in the shape of a frog, I said, yup, that's what it is!

That brings back memories of when we tuck pointed the basement walls of our old Second Empire a few years back. We lime washed the walls afterward and it really brightened up the space. Excellent work sir!

Nice job of repointing, Caleb! Glad you are using the correct mortar. So many people use the wrong type and wreck their stonework.Also that you are not omitting the step of wetting it while it cures.

That style of stone work was very popular for fireplace feature walls in living rooms or downstairs in the "rumpus" (family) room of 1950s and 60s bungalows.

I love watching your progress. I’m cheering you on! I did noticed the space between the joist and the foundation. I believe you can insulate that and save a large percentage on your heating bill. I read that 50 years ago.

I love the quail tap, however I suggest an auto winterizing tap just because you do get cold weather and don’t want leaks Edit: maybe there’s a way you can incorporate both!

I like watching the stone foundation walls being brought back to how they should be. It's like you're darning the petticoats! 😂 It really does make a difference in the look and feel of the space and I'm glad to hear that it's cut down on the amount of air flowing in. That will make your bills for heating (and cooling, too, I assume) a little bit lower. Combined with the work on the mansard, things will be much more buttoned up come end of summer! So happy to see Kim! She looks great and I enjoyed her video clip on the Vulcan in Birmingham. You're getting a great shirt out of the deal, Kaleb! Please tell Kim we all miss her smiling face so much. And I'm glad to see her pretty curls are back!

The Sloss furnaces are a really cool abandoned industrial area. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area. The Barber motorsports museum is another hidden gem in the area. A world class car and motorcycle collection and museum tucked away in the Alabama countryside. There's also a fun little air museum near the furnaces.

My mom and I stayed at a hotel near there for one night and there was an old motorcycle in the lobby in a glass case. We’re not motorsports folks but it seems like a neat place. We were actually in Atlanta for the bulk of our trip but we had to go to Birmingham because their zoo has my favorite animal, Pallas’s cats.
