Kaleb, your thoroughness in rehabbing this lovely house makes me so proud. You’d think I was related to you but I believe it boils down to not knowing many young men who have this much drive and compassion to fulfill a project of this magnitude; and I selfishly want to share this moment in time. Keep going, you are truly an inspiration to many watching…from PA.

I see I’m not the only one to comment on how good your masonry work looks in spite of your saying you don’t necessarily enjoy it. Well, the love you have for your home shows through in the dedication to correcting the mistakes of former owners. That wall is looking amazing! You can really see the difference in the areas you’ve cleaned up with that needle scaler. Thanks as always for taking g us in this wonderful journey with you. Take care.

The stone foundation looks so much more attractive then a block foundation wall. Harder to do though eh? If there was a chimney , which you filled in, maybe the black is embedded soot from a wood stove or something

That void was maybe a clean out for the fireplace. Would’ve had a metal access door. Our basements are a lot alike and most of ours are still intact and looks a lot like this. But lookin good.

Kaleb, you’ve become a Jack of all trades. You pretty much self taught yourself in how to do what you’ve been doing. Of course I realize you’ve read up on much of it n even watched some Utube too. It really amazes me at how well you’ve done. I give you so much credit n lots of pats on the back. Everything you’ve done looks fantastic. Be proud of yourself as you deserve it n much more. You’ve become a builder, you’ve done masonry, plumbing, painting to rebuilding old machinery. Yep, you’re a Jack of all trades n I love all of what you’ve done. Hope weather will start getting better n better to get busy on the outside. ♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟🌟

You have made wonderful progress on that wall! I would imagine that area might have been for the coal storage which would “leave its mark” on the foundation. Every step you take is one more closer to you having achieved your aim of restoring this historic home. I’m cleaning out the Family Home of 52 years and you inspire me to accomplish something every day, to look at what I HAVE done. Enjoy the Spring weather as you work outside. 🌷

At about 2 minutes: Is hole in your basement wall under a first floor fireplace? If so, do you eventually plan to burn wood in that fireplace? Because, what you may have there is an ash pit, for receiving wood ash from the firebox, to be cleaned out later after it’s cooled off. If it’s an ash pit it would have originally had an iron door to contain the ashes.

Visited St Louis for the eclipse and had a chance to respectfully drive by your beautiful home. St. Louis reminds me a lot of my home town of Baltimore and is full of architectural treasures! So cool to get a look in person. So wild to see the massive NGA construction so close to you. Even got to see the tragic ruins of the church near you and I was weirdly upset even considering I never knew about the church and had no connection to it. Just heartbreaking. Keep working. Love the channel!

The chimney was probably for the house incinerator, used to burn trash. Any house of that size would've had one, and that's where it would've been. Also, victorianantiquities below said it but I'm echoing it: you've got to be able to drain that line completely and right now you'll have trapped air, particularly since you've run copper outside. (Galvanized will tolerate freezing far, far better than copper will, which is why outdoor runs were usually galvie. Copper shatters. It's better in every other way than galvie, but not in that way.) So add a T-stop and a second cutoff to fully drain that line going out.

Sandy luuuuuuvvves you, Kaleb! Did adopt her or did she adopt you? Add masonry to your already mind-blowing skillset. And yeah, I hear ya about hiring "professionals" to do a job. I dearly hope I don't have a problem with getting the outside sills of three of our original wood windows worked on. One of them upstairs has a hole big enough to put a man's fist in and a bird's nest was being built! The joys of old houses!

That's looking really great, and I imagine the lime mortar will have something of a brightening effect on the lower stones, too, once you get to repointing there. I would be very nervous running copper to the outside like that... I might have done an insulated pex line through the wall itself, and copper only where it would be seen on the inside of the wall, so that it's a short run which won't have water in it in winter and also won't be exposed to outside winter temperatures. (I also probably would have made sure my masonry in that area would be easy to remove just a small section of it should I ever need to service that pipe, because I am paranoid like that. 😂) But on the plus side, that spigot and the copper pipe really do look beautiful! If you're careful about draining it and shutting it off once temperatures drop, you probably won't have any problems with it, and even if you do ever have issues, you now know enough to be confident that despite the hassle of it you're fully capable of fixing whatever might come up. So probably the sheer beauty is worth the risk.
