I have had this sander for 6 years and love it. So far I've only had to replace the sanding pad and somehow it runs better with the new pad.

I have this sander. It’s not going to last in a commercial wood shop for sure, but for around the home projects it’s perfect. When I first used it, it left a lot of pigtails on my workpiece, but that was a technique issue, not the sander. Now that I’m looking to start a woodworking business, I will be looking for a new sander, but this one has worked just fine for the two years I’ve had it.

I myself bought that one as it was on the list of tools on Steve Ramsey's guide for tooling a woodshop for $1000. I dont use it a lot, but for the price have been happy

Thanks for the review. I was joking with my son yesterday in the shop about cheap Black and Decker tools. I have a few in the shop with cords and they are over 30 years old. He commented that i certainly got my moneys worth out of them. I agreed, I have.

I think this is a sander that non professionals (or homeowners, housewifes etc ..) buy because they will use it a couple times on a project and they recognize the name from their coffee pot or kitchen appliance since it is the same brand. It is a great little sander and probably has some of the same DeWalt DNA. If it works, it works.

I think it is a combination of price along with name brand. You can get some cheap sander you have never heard of or spend a few dollars more for a Black & Decker (a name many are familiar with). When most people think of Wen, they think bargain brand, so going with a name they trust at a really low price is just the right combination.

I've used this sander for a while and it does work well and hasn't had any issues. The bag does collect a surprising amount of dust if you're not using a shop vac too.

I already had the DeWalt random orbital sander when I saw this video. I enjoy restoring cast iron woodworking machine tabletops, but wanted to keep my DeWalt for sanding wood only. Bought the Black & Decker model BDERO600 for around $40 for dedicated restoration purposes. Although it is powerful enough, the fatigue from vibrations is real. In my honest opinion the B&D sander is good for a few minutes of usage. After that you’ll feel that unpleasant feeling of a “shaky” hand as you described in the video. If I have to buy it again, I’ll just skip the B&D and get the DeWalt.

Lol! I actually purchased this exact sander to sand the planks on a deck I built on the back of my house. I know it sounds silly, but I got it because it was cheap, and I didn't want to destroy my Festool sander. In all honesty, it worked like a champ. I didn't care about dust because it was all outside. I also didn't notice any hard fatigue, but I was wearing a work glove, so.....could it be used for fine sanding on something you want a perfect finish on......maybe....but it's a big maybe. 😊

Based on experience, I'd recommend a plugin/corded DA sander as opposed to the typical battery powered unless you're already on a particular battery platformer looking to be. Corded allows a much longer runtime so can take your time and be careful with your project. Also, I a quick sanding tip, I like to sand all of the pieces of a project before assembly. Makes it way easier, almost always.

I have been using this for past 6 years and still have it. I was an occasional woodworker and this was perfect for that. Recently I started working on bigger pieces and this was not cutting it so took a plunge a bought bosch get65-5n and its a night and day difference, but I still feel this has a place in my workshop and thus keeping it!

I have this one as well. In May it will be 2 years. Seems to work just fine for my evening and weekend use. I will use it 'til it goes kaput and switch to a dewalt or better. I have a 2 inch hose I keep zip tied to the power cord for hookup to the dust collectors ivac switch. This was a company gift - like I got to pick from a few items and this was one of them. Still happy I chose it.

If only you could get something similar with a low profile. There are a few copies out now of the mirkas with a paddle switch. These don't have a speed adjustment dependant on how far you push the paddle down but that doesn't really matter. The best thing about the mirkas (for me) was that my wrist wasn't 6 inches above the piece I was sanding and all those vibrations were moving through a larger sander body towards it. Lower and wider would be awesome.

I own the wen sander and I use the Diablo net sanding disc's almost 0 dust when I use my cheap $20 2 gallon shop vac and the sander is so smooth you really should try it.

I think it’s important to also acknowledge the corporate umbrella they fall under. Black & Decker is owned by Stanley. Stanley also owns Craftsman, Porter Cable, Irwin, Mac… and DeWalt 😎

My last job i worked as head of maintenance at a Best Western and the owner was CHEAP AS F. They would not spend money on tools I needed so I ended up with all Black and Decker shit, small circular saw(cordless), a drill(cordless) and that sander. I was actually impressed with quality for the price. Over the 5 years I worked there I beat the piss out of them and never gave up on me.

I use this sander, it’s been doing the trick for quite a while.

I got a Bauer from Harbor Frieght. Works great and hasn't let me down yet. I think it was on sale, $27ish. The Black and Decker name doesn't carry the same weight out used to. Kinda like Craftsman.

Agreed with you and the other commenters, it's not pricey, gets good reviews and it's got a name the has a certain pedigree from the 'old days'. Good review, and yeah, good choice for homeowners and those starting out woodworking.

I have the Wen sander. It’s fantastic.

I finally moved to a Ridgid orbital, variable speed, soft start...it's incredible, and no discomfort even after more than an hour of steady sanding. Not a B&D fan at all.

I have this sander and bought it for household DIY. You're right about the sort of goldilocks price point and otherwise Black and Decker used to be a valued tool brand. Why didn't you run it hooked up to same dust extractor as your Dewalt? No sander is going to collect most of the fine dust without extraction.

I’ve been using this sander for probably 10+ years. Only issue I’ve had was the Velcro came loose in one spot and needed a glue touch up. The bag is useless so I just connect my shop vac.

I have carpal tunnel, after 35+ years in the automotive and Heavy Duty transport industries. All those repetitive motion, loosening bolts, tightening bolts, removing engines, disassembling, inspecting, rebuilding/reassembling engines, and transmissions, grinding, sanding, painting all have taken their toll, and I haven't even mentioned what all those years and all those long hours have done to my knees. All that to say, I want smoothest sander available.🤓😎😇😂

You cannot judge the dust collection if you keep on sanding after the collection bag is filled. There's no place else for the dust to go than onto the work and into the air. Maybe it's better than you think, or maybe not. Your method doesn't tell us how well it performs in this regard if we empty the bag before it fills.

BTW, better to make bench cookies than buy them, especially in Canada where we pay 50x the price for everything. But they are very handy!

I think that's wicked for a start up woodworking or hobby woodworking. I have a Makita orbital sander 110v and it's an absolute machine although one day would like to upgrade to mirka or 3m but can't justify the price right now. Great video Matt! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

But how well does it holds up over time? If you use it 30 minutes a week for 6 months or a year, how good does it run? Do the Velcro pads stay on? Heat? Power? Vibrations? I'm pretty sure any sander you buy on Amazon will be ok for a 20 minute run with a good sanding disc on.

Great video and a great pick. This little sander is actually a jewel. I have both the Dewalt and the B&D and really don't have a preference if I need to grab a corded sander. I always use a vaccuum on any sander as well as the 3M paper. Save some money on the B&D and use it to buy the Dewalt, Makita or Festool cordless unit. BTW, if you need to spend more than 15 minutes sanding something and do that often, you really should be using a high quality air sander or kiss your hands goodbye.

I have a Bosch 5”, it’s pretty dang good. I just got a 2.5” hose to hook to it it’s great. Only complaint is the Dang 3m 710w sanding discs don’t stick well to it!!!! Makes me an angry badger.

Dad used to say that if you plan on keeping something more than 5 years, buy the best you can afford. B&D doesn’t apply.

I have the Black & Decker sander with the paddle on top. Otherwise it looks the same. I have found it to be a good sander. I also have the same Dewalt sander. I find that i like to use the Black & Decker for the 60 & 80 grit with standard sandpaper and the 100-150+ I use the Dewalt with the Xtract appear from 3M. I like the finishing with the Xtract and Dewalt more then the Black & Decker. Just my personal preference and opinion. Great comparison video!!

I had the same sander. Bought it because of the price for a name brand. It worked well but the pad didn't last. It started binding after about 60 hours of total use, had to replace the pad. Ended up buying a Dewalt.

I went with the Skil. It's pretty fast. Variable speed. Definitely better than the B&D.

I can think of another reason why it is the best selling sander. When a non woodworker wants to buy a woodworker a sander as a gift, they go onto Amazon and they buy black and decker because they recognize the brand. That is how I got mine from my wife many years ago 😀The sander has been working fine and meets my diy needs. And you cannot beat the price. I laughed when I first saw the picture for the video because I recognized the sander.

Thanks, Matt. Good video, I had a Black and Decker Quantum (those green tools they sold for a while) ROS that I used for years until it finally died. Much like the current one, it was a single speed that worked pretty well, that had a dust bag that only sort of worked and sprayed fine dust on everything. Got a Makita a few years ago that I can hook up to my shop vac and it is so much better. Looking forward to your comprehensive sander review.

Because it's cheap and many new woodworkers buy the cheapest to get going. Black and Decker has the title of the go to budget brand because it's in all the box and department stores. My very first tool purchase was a B & D jig saw, purchased used in 1993 from a college student for $10. I still have it and use it on occasion when I break a blade on my newer Craftsman Pro jig saw. Still works well after 30 years.

I think the name sells it. You look about the same age as me, so I’m sure your experience is similar. I always saw my grandad and parents using black and decker, Skil and craftsman tools growing up that still work to this day. In fact I’m refurbishing my grandads old craftsman table saw now and it still runs good after sitting up for a couple of decades. So we associate those names with a tank of a tool they were in our childhood, even though the modern versions of those names have been relegated to diy/weekend warrior brands.

Mine just died (I think) a week ago while scuff sanding 6 doors. I got exactly 3 years out of it 😂 spooky. It started making a rubbing noise and then it let out this loud shriek and a pop. I just replaced the backer pad on it too. Only issues in the 3 years was the power button was starting to lose its tactile responsiveness.

This is good for DIY'ers, who may only use it once in a blue moon. But not a good buy for real woodworkers.

I quit buying B&D about fifty years ago. And yes I know B&D /Stanley owns some good companies, but B&D is the walmart of tools. If it can be cheapened up they will do it. I am not a complete snob, but B&D is one I do not break on.

Black & Decker and DeWalt are both owned by Stanley tools, and there are a lot of common components between all tool brands. I worked for them for 5 years.

I got the skil which has antifatigue was maybe a little more than Black and Decker and usually take and have Black and Decker but I really like the skil.

It's the cheapest recognizable brand sander. BTW, I've had one of these B&D sanders for over a year. I bought it as a cheap replacement for a Bosch sander that crapped out on me in the middle of a project. I didn't want to spend $80-100 at the time and planned on replacing it at a latter date with a "better" brand. After using it I never saw the need.

Howdy Mr. 731....a.k.a. Mr. Buttons (I'm gonna start getting everyone to call you Mr. Buttons. 😅). (Inside joke people 😊). I LOVED this video. Give your editor a fist bump (or bonus 😮) cause I loved it when you held up your hands and there was a pic of a sander. Excellent!!! Moving on; All that dust collected in the bag. Though I don't own a B & D sander, my Dewalt has a bag and on my initial FIRST rough sanding, I use the bag instead of the vacuum attachment for the specific purpose of being able to collect the dust from THAT board/boards. I then empty that bag into a zip lock sandwich bag and label it...Pine, Walnut, Cedar etc etc and I date it. I have found that "when needed", that particular dust from THAT board comes in handy when, for instance I want to fill in Brad nail holes, perhaps minor cracks. I'll add some glue (just a little bit) and then sprinkle some dust onto that glue, then sacrifice some 100 or 120 grit WHILE the glue is still wet and sand/rub that into the nail holes or small cracks/scratches. It's a perfect match every single time. As for vibration. Honestly Mr. Buttons (😊)....I have no idea what you and others are talking about. I have NEVER noticed any vibration numbness. Back when I actually worked in cabinet shops n such, we used sanders that hooked up to an air hose. No vibration numbness. I've used Dewalt sanders forever and a day plus 2 more days, never had numbness. I dunno Sir....Perhaps I'm just used to it? Never seems to bother me and certainly not a bother enough to where I'd dump $300+ on a sander just for that purpose. All in all though...I'd say it comes down to "method" of sanding. The variable speed TOTALLY makes a difference depending on which stange of sanding you are doing. Lower speed for rough sanding, higher speed AND a lighter pressure for finer sanding. Easy. As for any sandpaper that comes with a tool.....well, it's kinda like that plastic miter gauge that comes with a tool. It's crap. Goes straight in the garbage. I like Diablo sandpaper for my rough sanding, then I switch to cubitron for finer sanding. Rough sanding with cubitron disks just wastes money, clogs up way too much and I've used cheap cubitron and VERY expensive, same result. Anyways Sir Buttons 😅, Loved the video. Looking forward to the next one.

Honestly my go-to sander for years has been a B&D quarter sheet palm sander. Got a decent Bosch ROS, just never felt like it does any better. 🤷🏼

Black and Decker generally has a good historical reputation. I have some that have lasted for a long time (does anyone remember the Black and Decker Mouse sander?). Among those that DIY, I imagine that reputation still carries forward. And heck ya, it is cheaper, and made by the same company the makes Dewalt. Hmm, they sure look alike.

Featured items get more purchases because people think Amazon knows better, but the fact companies pay Amazon to feature products is not a true indicator it's better.

I think you overlooked one other element to the equation. Brand recognition. People who primarily use tools in a DIY fashion may still recognize Black & Decker for their past reputation as opposed to now where they're now been largely eclipsed.

I have this sander. It was something that I got when I did not need a sander for much, basically for small home projects, things that some might use a block plane for. e.g. this door won't open in the rain. Small amount of sanding and a new coat of paint and the door opens again. This was before I got into woodworking and needed a better sander, which I have now. I would disagree with the point of it being in the middle priced, I think it has more to do with familiarity with B&D and the price compared to DeWalt. Where Powerstroke probably makes an okay sander for the same types of jobs, but the B&D is so close in price to it I would go for the one I am familiar with for a few dollars more. It is almost like when you buy a TV, do you go for the Visio or the off branded TV (it depends on your opinion of Sony). Yes one is slightly more expensive, but the other one is a named brand.

I have this sander. Worked great until the plastic on the pad melted at the mounting points and came off. Costs almost as much for a new pad as it does the sander. I have a DeWalt now.

Holy crap, 12 bucks lowest price is insane. I pay more than that for 50pc pack of 3M Xtract Cubitron sanding paper.

It's probably better than my ridgid. There were only a few hours on it, and it started surging. Sent it back to be repaired and bought a festool. UPDATE: ridgid did replace my ridgid with a new one. Just received it 5/10/23.

One reason it is a best selling product is the name. B&D (NOT bondage and discipline) has been a respected tool brand more than 100 years. An additional tidbit: B&D owns Dewalt.

I actually just bought this sander. I don’t think I’ll sand for 20 minutes at a time. But so far I’ve been happy with it in my first build of a patio table. The dust bag is garbage. But the sander itself seems fine to me as a beginner.
