One BIG thing you missed @7:30 is a playground! I cannot tell you how valuable that would be for charging on a road trip with my kids! So envious! Imagine getting lunch, bathroom stop and then playground, then get back on the roadtrip. This is the future.

Sure beats the scenery in your typical US Wal-mart parking lot. Good stuff Kyle. Thank you.

Well before the pandemic.. Most Walmarts were 24Hrs. So you had acces to walking around, shopping for just about anything, and food choices.. Not great ones.. But you could go in get stuff to make sandwiches.. etc during normal hours most have McDonalds or Dunkin or other food choices. Why would you just hang out in the parking lot? Now.. though most Walmarts close at 11PM which defiantly sucks. But this amazing place.. also just has a small area and vending machines after hours... so not that much better.

EA isn't profitable even being in Walmart parking lots. This facility is a white elephant.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 2 жыл бұрын
@@homomorphic Neither is any other EV charging station company. Tesla also supports their charging Network costs to a degree. They're not cost-effective nor profitable independently. Maybe in California or places where there are lots of cars.. Walmart makes a lot of sense as a place to put charging stations. You've got some place to go that used to be open 24 hours they have food and products available. And it's an easy way to blow 30 or 40 minutes just walking around inside the store in a climate controlled environment. After the pandemic this practicality has been somewhat reduced because Walmarts are no longer open 24 hours. VW did not build this network because they thought it would be profitable. They built it in lieu of paying massive fines for diesel gate. Hoping that in the future perhaps it might make them some money back.
@homomorphic
@homomorphic 2 жыл бұрын
@@kens97sto171 it will have to become profitable at some point otherwise it will disappear.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 2 жыл бұрын
@@homomorphic I totally agree with you. Tesla built out a massive national network long before there were enough Teslas on the road to take advantage of it. Return on investment could be long. But Volkswagen had to spend the money regardless either directly to the government as a fine or to build out this network. At least the second option holds the possibility for future income. Ultimately there are going to be far more electric vehicles that use the CCS standard then Tesla supercharger standard. That's already true in Europe where Tesla has both connectors on their cars. My fear is that ultimately there won't be enough CCS chargers for long distance road trips. EA only has four chargers at most of their locations. For now that's not really a problem but it will be eventually.

17:45 Another great charging location is Seed&Greet in Hilden (North Rhine-Westphalia). The concept is a little different from Sortimo but it's definitely one of the best places to charge your car, because of the different charge point operators with different charging speeds available there and the nice bakery that the founder of the charging hub runs. Every saturday at around 10 am EV enthusiasts from all over Germany meet there to talk about their experiences with EVs and sometimes rare prototypes show up.

Hey Kyle, nice to inspire you of this charging hub! The DC chargers are load share but not as common known as they are all DC on one input they basically "share" about 3MW input DC to all this points with focus on first come first serve. If you are the 40th and wanna DC charge you could probably only get less than the first who came. But as you just pay several fees in kind of categories you can only choose a lower charging speed at this time not effecting all the others, who are already charging. In real world I guess even no one ever has this situation 😅

That charging station is AMAZING! I really hope America will take the responsible route and not allow greed or apathy turn charging into a trashy system. When Bjorn went home to Thailand (?) it was a collective nightmare of charging. Some were single chargers located in desolate areas, dozens if not hundreds of different companies charging different rates and ALL requiring you download an app to your phone, give them personal information and credit card info. It reminded me of a few years back when 711’s, gas stations, grocery stores and strip malls had shady ATM machines everywhere. I hope America gets this right.

Out of Spec: fun video! Kyle you mention the hassle of localized app stores, and that you are getting new devices. For what it’s worth: I country hop a lot, so here’s a tip: in iOS, you can easily sign-out of the App Store for a country, create an Apple account for the local country, and sign-in to that profile, download an app for that locale, then sign-back in to your US account. My primary Apple account is US, but I also have Canadian and UK Apple accounts to do just what you talk about here. In iOS, go to settings, tap your profile, then tap “media and purchases”, and sign out of your US account. It doesn’t sign you out of anything else (eg iCloud for auto backups), you can use two different Apple accounts on the device at once (one for iCloud, and a different one for App Store). Super handy. But, man, welcome to the Globalist club. Before someone taught me how to do this, I couldn’t order pizza when I went to Toronto!

Your video is not only very informing it is also very important and for a few reasons. 1: It shows the rest of the world how it can be done. 2: It shows visitors how to use a 'foreign' station and 3: it shows that there is no need for panic, cussing and all those expressions that might come forth because you think all you can get is a loust bfew amps of charging. This is a very smart charging station and I hope other companies follow the pattern. Thanks.

The entire charing system ergonomics is just fantastic. The compact simple charging post that are soft flexible is a great detail. But I think the game changer when it comes to charging was the Trickle Charge before paying activation. That would prevent a massive headache when it comes Borked charger and you trying to pay for it. This expensive setup would need to be scaled up in production to make it more viable elsewhere.

It would be nice to see some of the US government infrastructure money be used to build a few stations like this as "show pieces" to get people excited, and place them in the highest-volume BEV areas in America (mainly LA and the Bay area in California, right now, I guess). Build two or three of these and get tons of publicity for them, and companies might sprout up to take off building lots of them, with construction supported by a combination of government and automaker funding. As you say, these stations have lots that most American charging stations do not: covered charging, lots of stations that work and are maintained, a really nice place to eat and pee and work that's not ugly like Walmarts, easy plug-and-charge capability (even if with credit card) without having to look at screens that are blinded by sunlight (and snow), and easy on/off the expressways. This concept is needed to get people into BEVs everywhere, even if many people never use them.

Nice video. Thanks. But there is one big NO NO ... You parked/charged on the disabled parking spots at the beginning. Those are marked with the wheelchair sign and the arrwos show the start and end. This can get very expensive if the police checks it. The sticker on the station shows that the charging station has received funds from the EU to push the charging infrastructure. They are nearly on every charging station. The provider gets money to build the charging point but has to comply some rule slike public access etc.. Happy driving and thanks for your video.

Hows the electric car going to work out with predicted electrial shortages in Winter in Germany?? I look back around January 2023.

DCFC isn't any more efficient than AC. It's actually far less efficient at high currents. Your car is doing the same thing as those cabinets just at a much lower power level. Charging at 35kW is probably reasonably efficient with those big water cooled conductors. Depends on how the cabinets are being utilized though. Typically AC-DC converters run at peak efficiency around 80-90% loading, but that could also require cooling. Activating the cooling system could bring total efficiency back down to a part-loaded converter that won't need cooling. I'd love a deep dive into how they operate those cabinets, including sequence of operations for various scenarios.

Such an awesome spot. Sure seems they they are likely to loose money for a few years due to lack of enough cars. Hope they make it thru till volume increases greatly.

Love the concept! What would improve the site would be solar panels. Are there battery storage areas in the background at 12:10?

The solar panels are located on other buildings in the neighborhood. Tho whole power distribution of the site is based on DC.

The out-of-market issues apply to gas too. The Aussies that come do Drag Week always have issues getting fuel cause they don't have a US zip code to enter into the pump.

Before Netflix went international, all the Aussies put 90210 for the zip code. It's the only one we know :)

You can also look at EnBW Charging Station at Kamen Karree 12, 59174 Kamen. Very beautiful, not been there myself yet but worth the visit. I think there should be a similar-looking one close to Munich (I am not sure) so you might need to check that before driving all the way to Dortmund.

I feel like this could work between LA and Vegas or Between LA and San Francisco on I-5. Probably some corridors on the east coast could do it too.

Nice! Welcome to Europe! You should take the trip to the "Ev country nr1" ; Norway, while you're at it! 👍 👍 There are som legacy fuel companies here (Cirkle K, etc) that have stared building ev filling stations. Those are in the southern parts of Norway, closer to our capitol.😜
Just try to use a cool gadget 😍
