I can guarantee you that they have MANY consultants, and they did multiple rounds of testing and focus groups. The problem is not whether or not companies receive the information it is whether or not they deign to accept it. And sadly the people responsible for green lighting ideas live in a bubble of wealth which no amount of information can penetrate. More than likely, this thing is just to get people talking about the brand to hopefully boost sales of their other products.

It's perfect for a smaller room like a bedroom to have it constantly running on night mode. Thanks to the app (and also just smelling) I notice an improvement in air quality. So yeah, especially their purifiers is a jack of all trades, master of none.

How can one like their vacuum cleaners? 1. They last only a few minutes on max power until you have to recharge them. 2. They are heavy. However, this goes hand-in-hand with the short battery usage, so most people won't notice. 3. As mentioned, you can use them only for a short time, so they only make sense for small apartements. 4. They are absolutley weak compared to ANY vacuum cleaner powered with a cable I had. Total disaster. I never used them again.

Outside while on a walk/jog, or commuting... in the fresh outside air 😅 If it's just a facemask with an air purifier in it, it'd make more sense to me. Fun fact: James Dyson tried over 5000 different prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner before getting a manufacturer on board - and that manufacturer only sold in Japan. Dyson used that money to launch his own business. The rest is history. So, of all inventors, Mr. Dyson seems to be familiar with hit and misses a lot. All that said, I just hope there aren't 5000 prototypes of these headphones LOL
@klausstock8020

Yep, Dyson tried to copy an industrial bagless cyclone vacuum he once saw in a sawmill. It's impressive that be built 5127 prototypes in five years... In any case, I guess his patented idea is just to use cyclonic separation in a (domestic) appliance. And to provide at least one "industrial strength" feature (apart from the pink color), he added an "industrial strength" price (equivalent to 10,000€ in 2023 money,).
@tow.JanWinnicki

I would say, he is not a really good inventor if it really did take him 5,000 prototypes to make, for all intents and purposes, a pretty straightforward product. I think a lot of DYSON'S products remind me of BOSE. Lots of marketing hype and premium prices.

The Dyson Solarcycle Morph Lamp I’ve got on my desk is awesome. You can set it to the zip code it’s in, so it follows the sun’s position in the sky. As the day progresses, the light becomes increasingly brighter and whiter; as the day wanes, the light becomes mellower and more yellow to help with your circadian rhythms. Achieved by regulating the amount of blue light it emits. It also has a proximity sensor so if I get up in the middle of night, it lights my path, then turns off once I’m back in bed. It can turn on at preset times to coincide with your morning routine, helping you wake up, for example. When you’re away on a trip, you can set it to turn itself on and off randomly. It has different light modes: study, precision, relax, wake up. All this for $650. A high end side table lamp with nothing but an on/off switch and none of these features can cost anywhere from $1,800 to $3,800 and up if bought from any of the well established lighting and design companies such as FLOS, Roche Bobois, Artemide, Design Within Reach, etc.

I;ve got sleep apnoea & a cpap machine, the whole point of that is it provides high air pressure that keeps your throat open whilst asleep, while you're awake you don't have apnoeas so pointless wearing a cpap mask. Even if you wear these headphones whilst sleeping (which given their huge size and weight, seems an impossibility), there's nowhere near enough pressure nor sealing to keep your airways open. Given the rigouress testing any medical device has to undergo, I reckon Dyson himself would advise you not to even consider doing that.

my confusion is why didn't they just make a motorcycle helmet which cools the driver with a fan, has decent quality headphones and somewhat filters the breathing air? That way the pricepoint for the materials makes more sense and there's an actual target audience. Also that would help with the weight issue as a helmet will already be heavy. From the look of the filter, it's for physical filtration only (e.g. dust). To remove chemical vapors (gas, "porta-potty", etc.), you need different materials (usually activated carbon). Dyson tried to make a PAPR which doesn't need a seal but at least they admit it's not a medical grade. I knew this product was a joke the first ad I saw. Glad you called them out on this one!

It's not a joke though, its an actual product that got actually greenlit and can actually be purchased.

If you look closely there's a carbon prefilter behind the HEPA element.

It does look like the electrostatic filters are impregnated with carbon, but not nearly enough to remove chemicals/VOCs

cool explanation, doc, N95s did not reduce transmission at the meta level. the data is unambiguous and we've known since the spanish flu that masking does not stop respiratory virus

the positive pressure makes reduces the need for a seal. Not sure by how much, but an N95 mask has not positive pressure. this does. We make laboratory clean room hoods that use the same phenomena. There's no seal but the positive pressure creates a virtual wall for the air.

This actually could be really effective as a loss leader strategy, because now if they released $400-500 headphones with these features minus the respirator, and put their engineering talent towards high quality audio, I’d be interested to check them out, whereas before, I wouldn’t even consider looking at them.

It's crazy to me how the thing that you gushed the most about on this product was the little joystick/nubbin control. Like literally the kind of reliable input controls that we've had for about a century, but everyone's been so obsessed with digital fingerpainting for the past decade and a half that, I don't know, we've forgotten that other control schemes just work better in a lot of applications? I'll be really glad when the novelty has fully worn off of touchscreens and we start getting smarter input fusion solutions for our devices.

I also think it's funny because you're like, "it's nice to be able to just fast forward in Spotify through parts of a podcast, I've never seen that before," and I'm thinking you've got be like, ten-ish years younger than me, because I remember when MP3 players were first getting big and plenty of headphones came with volume and play controls just built into the cord. Hell I'm pretty sure my gaming headset has pause and play controls built into the ear cover along with the volume and mic mute buttons.

Dials and buttons have not disappeared for the novelty of touch sensors. Touch is just much cheaper, that's why hardware buttons and dials are probably gone for good, except for some premium devices maybe

@@RamadaArtist He was more surprised about the fast forwarding, the stopping and playing music has been out forever, which is something he's not gushing about, it's just the FF mode :)

@@eatyourvegetables1449 yeah maybe I'm conflating fast-forward with just track select. I can see fast-forward being really useful for podcasts like he said, but maybe not actually a feature on CD-rom mp3 players, like I'm thinking.
