To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

16:10 -- In 1914, the value of the ruble was approximately 50c US, which was then on the gold standard at $20/1ozAu. A ruble was therefore 1/40th oz Au. The first place of 1200Ru(1914) is thus equal to $39,000 March 4, 2019 dollars. As second-place finisher, Capablanca took home $26,000.

I get a very different result. The link below claims one ruble was worth 0.7774 grams of gold, which means it was worth 0.0486 ounces. RUB1,200 x 0.0486 = 58.3 Oz of gold, which is worth USD75,800 today. www.pravdareport.com/russia/123506-golden_ruble/

Lasker said of Paul Morphy: "Paul Morphy was the greatest chess player that ever lived. Every student of the game, who has delved into the stories of the past, realizes that no one ever was so far superior to the players of his time, or ever defeated his opponents with such ease, and no one ever offered knight odds to the men who considered themselves his equal." Comparing players of different eras is pointless, because chess theory evolves. The only meaningful comparison is how dominant a player was during their own era. On that basis, it's not even close, Morphy wins, hands down.

@agadmator 1 ruble in 1914 was around 777 rubles in todays equivalent, so 1200* 777 = 932,400 rubles today and that is around 15000 USD. Again, this is an estimate, but we can already see that chess was important with such high value prizes.

Casablanca sounds like a bad gentleman,he couldn't accept that he lose and congratulate opponent,but rather he choose to excuse himself by bad health and discredit Lasker's skill. He is a great chess player,but not a great sportsman(it reminds me a bit of Fisher)..

Capablanca was mistreated by Marshall slightly (with the little fiasco with the USA ch'ship), a lot by Lasker (who avoided a WC match against Capa like it was the cholera) and Alekhine (who ran away with the title to deepest and most obscure cave he could find never to respond to a tweet or a cable again). At the moment of the letter in the video Lasker had already been avoiding Capa for a good couple of years... All in all, he was very well behaved and quite balanced, I'd say...

Listening to The Prodigy - Breathe while watching the start of this video. I started to drift into thoughts of Capablanca's struggles at the chessboard; visualising to myself Jose closing his eyes and taking a breath while sitting behind his pieces. I really love that song - it carries many good memories. Casting a light through your death. I remember Keith Flint.

I had no idea that Capa was so toxic. Not being able to acknowledge and congratulate your opponent is a characteristic of lesser people. Lasker was 46 years old when this tournament took place and Capa should have the courage to accept his defeat and give him the credits.

The Leko mind is impressively plastic, the general population freeze up when assessing risk over benefit. At the most critical moment Leko wanted to open up the queenside, until he found the 2 knights would be better centralized. I had the sense, his thinking could move on to better ideas because a familiar arcane position had previously emerged from some dusty archive in the chess library - this is how the past can sometimes give comfort. Long may the agadmator epic adventures continue.

does anyone remember the game, played between 2 relatively unknown chess players. The game was kinda like an Immortal, and the white player won. In the game, he "accidentally" touched a pawn that couldn't advance, so his opponent made him play with a piece that had a legal move, turns out this is the move he wanted to play and the white player just touched the pawn to trick the opponent. Agadmator made a video on the game but I can't find the video. Can someone please tell me the title of that video so I can watch it again, thanks in advance.

I believe you are talking about the game The Deepest Move Ever played, where white moved the King to F1.

I think o found conclusive evidence, 1 rub from 1914 is about 29$ of today so with prizes ranging from 5800$ to 34800$ it was a pretty important event

In 1914 1 USD = 1.94 RUB. So the first prize was around 600 USD. Which adjusted to inflation would be 15 600 USD today. Pretty neat prize.
