There are some cool little solid state amps, the speaker probably hurts the tone more than anything. The full mix worked out pretty nice with the 4x12. Josh Homme has often blended in "bad" sounding little amps like these to get a more unique tone

it goes to show that the cabinet/speaker combination is the biggest factor in determining how the final thing will sound
