15,000 hotel workers in LA are just walked out in the largest hotel strike in modern US history.
LA’s hotel industry is raking in more profits than before the pandemic but refuses to offer workers even a penny more, and many can't pay rent.
Workers are ready to shut LA down.

It makes me cry, but atleast I know I'm not alone. I make $3,500 a month as an IDEXX Specimen Courier, meaning, if you've ever taken your pet to the vet clinic, and they got bloodwork done, I'm the person to picks it up, and drops it off at the lab. My income is tax-free which I am grateful for, but that is because my mileage cancels out my income. I don't have a car payment, but I spend around $1000 a month for Gasoline, Maintenance, and Insurance. $1,800 goes housing & utilities, $350 for food, $150 for phone, $75 for credit cards, and the remaining $125 is usually used for emergencies or for essential items that i had money dedicated for, but had dried up the funds for that category. Each month I am adding $250-350 to my credit card in debt, barely making the minimum payment, and the other day, i even saw that more than half of americans are having to put their bills on credit, because they simply can't afford to live. It's outrageous, and it almost makes me su!cidal. But, strength in numbers, we can fix this cost-of-living issue.

As a small business owner, *I* *LOVE* *UNIONS!* I Love Unions because I need what EVERY small business owner needs... I need Customers; aka Consumers with Money. Union Workers organize and demand proper wages = Money. Union Workers have Money and therefore, can become my valuable Customers. Non-union Workers are too timid and/or ignorant to organize and are therefore, weaker and poorer. They choose to be poor slave and they are NOT going to become My (or Your) customers, they are a drag upon our entire economy. I LOVE UNIONS BECAUSE UNIONS CREATE MIDDLE CLASS! ... and because I want Our country to have a Big and Strong Middle Class, thanks to Unions. UNIONS ARE GOOD FOR A STRONG AMERICA!

Why does your desire to make more Trump a business owners want to make more?? Business owners put up all the risk. Work for free for the first 3-5 years. 20% fail the first year, almost half by year 5 and 65% by year 10. Shouldn’t there be some kind of “fair” compensation for all the risk and free work? No employees risked their money or worked for free?? Why is those with the least amount of business and economic knowledge have the most to say on the topic? Isn’t anyone interested in educating themselves so they can have a better argument. Or at least counter points? Come on kids. Don’t be followers, be leaders.

@@FatherLarper-rz9kw what an absolute load of bullshit. Business owners put up some $ and borrow the rest for supplies, location if needed, lisences, labor, etc. covers your expenses including your pay. Anyone with confidence and knowledge of their trade can be a success if they know what they’re doing. You may break even for a few yrs but breaking even means you’ve been paid… making a profit is above and beyond that. That every biz owner works for free for the first 5 yrs is a line regurgitated in hopes of stifling competition..OR you dont know what you’re doing and need some schooling. Employees have worked and dont get paid … it’s literally in the billions, and from companies like Walmart. THAT is working for free. Plus employees are the first cut because biz owners absolutely refuse to take a cut themselves thus more work is piled on those who remain. Employers will continue to call and flatter the last naive workers and use them with the intention of not paying. Then employees are typically fired for dumb reasons so the employer doesn’t have to dole out bucks for unemployment. Employees take all the risk. Employer files BK for the company, avoiding losing any money to creditors they owe. They then sell the assets for more money. Lg & med size corporation leaders protected even further with golden parachutes while investors (bond holders then Class A Premium shares on down common shares avg Joes buy in the mkt) get any actual dollars and employees are treated as human capital. Employees lose all profit sharing, all stock options are worthless, pensions depleted. Now the former employees must take their former employer to court IF they can afgord it and are to likely lose because their former boss’ defense team keeps getting continuances for various reasons. But IF they show, the employees maybe are awarded back pay owed.. now how do you get them to actuall pay? Garnish? From where? And yes… I am an economist and a retired business owner.

The systematic nature of the way this has been happening is frightening. The death of democracy, the rapid takeover of all of the government by corporations and the indoctrination of this indentured servitude into the working/labor class, while the wealthy can never have enough. When is enough, enough? Like with all encounters with narcissim, asking why will never get the problem solved. The Hotels don't pay their workers enough. AND let's think about the other side of the equation for a minute. The reason housing is so expensive near Downtown LA is because of the housing shortage. And the reason there is a housing shortage is due to Exclusionary Zoning which is a classist/racist US invention that bans low-cost housing nearly everywhere. We can't give a pass to the abysmal land-use that created the housing shortage. We need to talk about that too.

@@themadman5615 The vacancy rate in Los Angeles is very low. When vacancy rates are less than 5%, rents typically go up, and when vacancy rates are more than 5%, rents typically go down. So it's no wonder why rents in LA have been going up when the vacancy rate was 2-3%.

@themadman5615 Жыл бұрын
@@mariusfacktor3597 I wouldn't know the specifics if LA, though I have looked into the rates for Oklahoma and New York. And as far as I can find, the official vacancy rates, as stated on open listings not proper empty apartments and homes, the vacancy rate is moderately low, around 5-15% depending on the state and county. But in actuality, much like the "unemployed" metric of the US, when you actually take into consideration available homes that simply aren't listed, the rates skyrocket. At minimum there is an average of one to two apartments or homes that go completely empty despite being fully habitable per about ten listed homes. The only reason this is done is to drive up scarcity, which of course incentivizes rising rent prices. All capitalism is now is artificial scarcity and a gross misuse of resources.
@mariusfacktor3597
@mariusfacktor3597 Жыл бұрын
@@themadman5615 You're being totally genuine and I can see how you'd think that, but I happen to know that the data doesn't back that up. Give me a chance to explain. The Vacancy Rate is a misunderstood metric. It contains every type of residential unit that is not being lived in. It includes units under serious renovation, student housing in the summer, vacation homes, units owned by an elderly person now in a nursing home, and of course, units for sale or for rent. So if a unit is being held off market to increase scarcity, it IS included in the Vacancy Rate. That's why the data doesn't back that up. If 10% of homes were being held off market, the Vacancy Rate would be 10%+, but it's way less than that. You're absolutely right that housing prices are the result of supply & demand. The reality is that there isn't enough supply due to exclusionary policies that were put in place to appease the already wealthy homeowners.

Although I ultimately support them, I feel this might be somewhat misdirected. This is mostly caused by the housing crisis which is worsened by zoning laws and parking minimums. That's partly why everyone in every industry is experiencing the same problems. Demanding higher pay is only a short term solution. They need to be protesting the city to get rid of parking minimums and build strictly affordable housing/mixed use development (and put a restrictions on who can purchase the buildings like Canada did).

The run-of-the-mill private citizen as a shareholder usually doesn't get much of a say in corporate policy. You get to fill out an occasional survey to vote for the board of directors and the people in charge, and maybe they also have specific issues for you to vote on, but that's about it. Most of what is in that survey is Greek to the average shareholder, and very often, it goes straight to the circular file because the shareholder doesn't care. That survey is only read by an automated machine, and you don't really have a chance to give much feedback of substance so that you can compel the people in charge to take action. If an individual was able to buy a controlling volume of shares, then they would take this individual seriously, if this individual approached their corporate office, and asked to speak to the board of directors. But a collective group of shareholders, all each only owning a drop-in-the-bucket of the company, probably not.

Cities are to blame here as well, rather than building a blend of affordable living options and high value options, they are instead granting developers the ability to continuously build town homes and condos that cost a half million to full million to buy. Meaning that it drives up prices locally and forces people out cause they can't afford the price inflation that comes with it, it needs to be checked before it gets out of control honestly.

When business as usual is no longer an option. When acceptable norms are no longer acceptable. The same comfortably complacent & complicit Trump "Resisters" will cry when watching "The Help" on premium cable; but don't give a damn about real human beings suffering today.

Until your demands are met hotel workers, remain on strike😊. Mangement can do your job.. They can hire someone for less than you are getting paid. The hotels must meet your demands.🎉

Maybe it will not be given, only taken, because the rich have a thirst that needs more of the other guys share. Labor is the problem and deserve nothing as the enemy is what is the new catchy trend.

Theres another way to go that rich wealthy people use.. reducing expenses. Saving money. A penny saved is a penny earned. Also, our treasury is built to reduce expenses. Ive save millions over and over the "poorer" i got. Its built like this to help the disadvantaged and exploited people. Genius but very little knows.

Just reinforces my dislike of LA. So sick of seeing people exploited. I wish them all the best with this strike. I hope it hurts the hotel owners enough to damage their reputations permanently and get workers the living wages they deserve. Don't be a scab; stay out of LA while they strike.

Does the union rep telling people who come that they won’t have clean hotel rooms think he is steering people towards their side? More likely to make people mad at them

I miss the days when owners operated their businesses. The investor class ought to get in there and operate the hotels they own. Then they can really think about what those wages pay for.

Its not worth it in the long run. I use to be a housekeeper in a major hotel, i lasted 3 years , until I got a new better paying job in my area of expertise. I was so glad. I worked 6 days /included working Saturday and Sunday, and 1 day off , worked to death minimum appreciation and pay. Forget it if I asked for a day off- it was like I committed a crime and I was a worker that was on time, always at work unless , extremely sick and when I was extremely sick with a fever of 101 , they had a hard attack , i told them I just can’t work I went as long as I could. I stand with you’s as a previous housekeeper.
