I’ve been a numismatic collector since my dad got me into it in 1964. We both became stackers years later. He and I both loved the St. Gaudens double eagles because they are so artistically beautiful. In my opinion the Morgan silver dollars are as well. A fellow who was a friend of a local coin dealer got us interested in old U. S. paper currency for a time. My dad had an uncirculated set of the so-called ‘educational series’ which was highly desirable because of the notes’ incredible artistic beauty. He also had an uncirculated $1000 bill and an uncirculated $500 bill. Most of his collection was sold at a Heritage auction in the early 2000’s. He passed in 2011. He also had a 1909-S VDB cent which graded at MS-65 red.

I carefully examine all Gold coins, even from reputable dealers. Sometimes even they fooled or bought from a trusted source. If there is any doubt bring out high power glass and check carefully. If you suspect anything wrong, show the dealer. 99% of coin dealers will know a fake by just looking at it. But as they get better, educate yourself. I was offered an 1834 $5 Classic Head once, and I declined and told the dealer why. He agreed. He later sent it in and it was returned genuine. We both learned something.

I like the circulated stuff, silver or gold. My grandmother got me started when I was young(over 50 years ago). She used silver dollars to line the bottom of her pan when she cooked apple butter. It kept it from sticking was what she told me. She had an old check box full and I was fascinated by them, even when I was very young. I got a few pieces after she died, even though she promised me all of them. My uncle got most of them before I had a chance.

Most interesting. I do buy both. However, the premiums are getting very high on the Constitutional gold, which moves me into the gold Eagles or old European gold. There is so much variety in gold now it does give the buyer some fixability to keep on collecting. Either way it is a great way to protect your future.

So the question is: How easy are those to sell? How much will the coin shop give for them? The key number to keep track of is not the premium, but rather the spread between what a dealer will sell it to you vs what they will pay you for it.

Caleb good point. I just got into gold and silver stacking back in Jan 2021. What astounded me then and now is 1. The Spot Price 2. The various mark ups premiums on gold and silver by the ever smiling Dealer(s) nationwide. 3. The buy back rip off by those ever smiling Dealer(s). The Dealer(s) are part of the problem, I have a sinking feeling that I will never get a fair return on my metals if the day comes that I need to sale. Bartering between trustful citizens may be our way to cut out those ever smiling Dealer(s). *I do not buy precious metals from Amazon or Ebay.

Back when gold was around $1800 I missed out on a Mexican gold coin at the coin shop price at $1750. A year after it was gone, I found out the centennial Mexican gold coin was 37.5 grams of pure gold- as it says on the coin, and around 41.6 grams total weight. Close to 1.21 troy ounces of gold. Mexican coins are much better, much more beautiful than anything minted in the US.

It was a few months before Christmas 1999, and my Employer asked me, "What should I get the employees for Christmas this year?" I said, "Get everyone a Gold Coin." His name was Norman Karlson, and he was the owner of Country Floors. For Christmas 1999 he gave all of us a Gold Coin. My Gold Coin was a 1894 $10 Gold Coin, like you are looking at there. Around 7 years ago, my mother-in-law died and left my wife, and my sister-in-law each 1/2 Sovereign, with a picture of Queen Victoria on it. I went to the Fair, bought a PCGS Membership, and decided to grade those 3 gold pcs, my $10 Gold, and my favorite beautiful toned Morgan Silver Dollar. That $10 Gold piece graded 1894 $10 PCGS Genuine Cleaning - UNC Details. I was pretty happy with the grades I received on all four of the coins.

Don't worry about the premium you're paying when buying gold as much as the premium (or discount) you'll get when you go to sell. Bullion dealers will typically pay a little over spot prices for American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and several other bullion coins. But they're also only pay 90% of spot prices for others like U.S. commemoratives and privately minted bullion.

In 2017 astronomers observed the merger of two neutron stars in a galaxy 130 million light years away. The merger created a kilonova which produced many Earth masses of gold, platinum and silver. Many other heavy elements were produced as well. The precious metals that we hold, trade and stack today were probably forged by a similar event.

Personally I do gold bars because the premiums on sovereign gold is getting up there. Granted, I am only able to buy like 5 ounce bars and an occasional 10 ounce bar, but I am still stacking some gold with my silver at the end of the day. Premiums are still high on fractional gold, but not as high as government gold.

Back in 1908, most automobile were priced around $2,000 (cost 100 x $20 gold coins) and Ford Model T was $850 (cost 42 x $20 and 1 x $10 gold coins).

There is some play in the premiums on the pre-1933 gold and silver. This depends on demand. Buy them when the demand is low (gold price stable or slightly moving down) and the lower grades have less premium and play to them.

Don’t forget to stack bourbons, esp Buffalo Trace allocations: Stagg, Stagg jr, Weller, Blantons, Rockhill farms, EH Taylor, T Handy, etc. It won’t spoil and it’s value is ever increasing over market increases as well as one can’t eat gold/silver- making it hard to trade it for food when it’s hard to come by. One can’t just go out back and shoot dinner in populated areas!!!??

Actually, British Gold Sovereigns were known as 'The Chief Coin of the World' because they were 91.7% pure gold. Just a bit purer than all the rest, most of which were, as you say, 90% or less pure gold.

I own two, 1 is an 1856 dollar i wear around my neck, the other was one of those imported fakes from the '50s, stamped 1915. So the sigma my LCS has read 90% Au, i took it home, instead of weighing 4.18g it was 4.19g, got out my pocket pinger and app, put in the 900 16mm and 4.19g and it kept coming up unable to read...tried 3 times, then i looked in the app's catalog for the $2.50 coin, supposed to be 18mm and did the test at 18mm and it passed 3/3. Got out my GoldLock card & magnet, not tungsten. Interesting part is they sold it to me as bullion, for $220 and that same Saturday, online, the melt value was $218! I paid a $2 premium for my 3+ grams of gold! Cool story, legit 90%, i don't have digital calipers yet I'm sure since it was 2mm less wide, it was however many nm thick it needed to be to meet that 4.19g@90% Au
