I've been thinking about a cello banjo lately - the potential to bring banjo down into an octave that's easier on my ears has a lot of appeal. Your note about sustain is a great point, though, and I can see how it could turn into a cacophanous mess playing banjo lines at full speed. The scale length seems a bit odd to me - Gold Tone normally does 26.75" five string banjos (and 32" long necks!), but the cello banjo is only 24.75"? On a guitar I wouldn't blink at that, but on a banjo it seems oddly short, especially against the giant body. I'm used to "lower tuning, longer neck". Obviously they know more about banjo design and acoustic properties than I do, though.

I actually felt a very similar way you did about that! I believe the reason for the shorter scale length is due to a number of factors. Most importantly, these strings are nylon and silver wound. I have experimented with using these strings at the similar scale length of a standard banjo neck and it results in the strings snapping; they simply cannot support the tension of a longer scale length. Most importantly, the amount of tension the strings apply to the head is very well balanced, and it results in a robust, powerful, clean sound. There would be no benefit to making the scale length longer for this instrument. Because the neck is wider, having the shorter scale length allows chords to be accessible. A longer scale length would make a number of chord shapes more difficult and uncomfortable.
