The Mediterranean supports countries in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa-but its fish stocks are almost completely collapsed. Meet the man who is leading attempts to revive its marine habitats. Film supported by ‪@blancpain‬

This is the extraordinary story of one man’s dream to save the most over-fished sea in the world. Zafer Kizilkaya has almost single handedly turned a ravaged bay in Turkey into one of the most effective and thriving marine conservation areas in the Mediterranean. His hope is to inspire others to bring marine life back to one of the most famous but damaged parts of the ocean.
It’s a chilly December morning on Turkey’s eastern-Mediterranean coast and Zafer Kizilkaya is a man on a mission. He’s dedicated to enforcing the no-fishing zones that he has helped create here in Gokova Bay.
Within just 20 minutes Zafer and one of his rangers have spotted something suspicious. Since marine conservationist Zafer set up the ranger system here in partnership with the Turkish authorities they’ve seen a significant drop in illegal fishing. It all began after Zafer first visited Gokova Bay in 2008 on a research trip from his home city of Istanbul. The damage he witnessed to marine life compelled him to stay and devote his life to repairing this.
Zafer lobbied his government to make the bay a protected area and ten years on his research suggests marine life has increased by 800% within his no-fishing zones.
But the revival faced another threat new species of fish coming into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. These invaders were eating the native fishes’ food and grazing parts of the seabed bare so Zafer had to adapt and come up with an innovative solution.
To make this work, he had to hook the local population into eating these unfamiliar fish and that meant persuading people to change their diets.
Zafer’s vision has delivered the bonus of raising the incomes of local fisher people by 400% and bringing a previously decimated industry back to life. Visit the fishing co-operative here and you’ll find an array of invasive species for sale caught outside the no-fishing zones.
Zafer’s innovations have delivered for both people and planet in this small bay and he’s now working to create another marine protected area in Turkey. It looks like a lonely mission. Latest figures show just 0.04% of the Mediterranean is a no-fishing zone 50 times lower than the average for the whole ocean.
Zafer is going to need all the help he can get.

@joeblack4436
@joeblack4436 4 жыл бұрын
@@loodytheleprican3079 I said overfishing. And thousands of individual fishers can in fact cause almost as much harm as the large industrial fishing does. It all depends on how fragile the specific ecosystem is that the fishing occurs in. Which at this point is basically... almost all marine ecosystems. The vast majority. 90%+ of fish stocks globally have been fished to the point where they are not even commercially viable anymore. Commercial fishing is obviously worse - But it's not a hard rule that recreational fishing is somehow never harmful. It depends on what is being fished, and where.

I am scuba diver and living in Turkey. We have beautiful seas, clean ve crystal blue. But no fishes at all. After a day of diving, divers prefer going to fish restaurants. And then you realize where the marine life is. As a consumer, I reject eating local fishes all the time, only when we have lots of fishes from Black Sea, in winter time. Mackerel and salmon from Norway, local aquaculture tuna is good for me.

All farmed fish are being fed smaller fish from the Baltic Sea, Baltic Sea is a no-fishing zone, due to how many chemicals Russia, Germany and France dumped there, Baltic Sea is a closed sea, it takes minimum 30-50 years before the sea can clean it self. Now, the fish you mentioned, "Norwegian salmon" which is farmed salmon(Norway export this technology of farming around the world, thats why everyone is eating Norwegian salmon) is eating poisonous fish as food, not to mention all the anti-biotic these fish gets in their system, due to all the deceases that occurs when living in such close encounters as they do. You should eat locally fished food, but you should support local fishers in stead of big tanks sweeping the world oceans. This is the job to the gov. around the world, to police such important matters, but as long as politician pockets fill, who cares what happens in the next 100 years

MitchConnect Crunk the baltic sea isn’t a no fishing zone, i live on the east coast of sweden and you can eat alot of the fish from the baltic sea. Of course you need to be careful with some species like wild salmon and herring but if you are male adult you can eat them once per week. I usually don’t eat fish from the baltic sea but it’s definetely not a no fishing zone.

I dove in Marmaris and Antalya, and I can say for sure the marine life is at a minimum, almost non existent. Not much to see or explore, I did see more trash and a toilet bowl than I saw fishes. I was so disgusted that i did not even dove my 2nd dive. I told the divemaster there is nothing to see and I was not going down a second time (i could tell it was another send bank and more rocks side rather then a coral - did not waste my time) I really do hope that this conservation will boost the area fish and the coral to come back. But, what about the trashes and tires and toilet bowls' are they going to clean that up? It is a great start none the less.
