Actually shotguns are pretty complex with all the moving parts that eject the shells and chamber/cycle bullets they can become pretty complex.

Quick tip: So long as you have ammo in your reserve you are able to reload your shotgun without moving by either clicking on the shot gun above the screen or by pressing the space bar. It seems so simple but but trust me it is a very useful technique and could even be considered almost down right mandatory at harder difficulties as it can allow you to reload without putting yourself in immediate danger.
