Could not have said it better myself. I'm in exactly the same boat, same age as Mark, have been through all sorts of approaches to learning guitar over the past 50 years. Trust me when I say, this is really great stuff. It has helped me more than anything I've tried over the years. Very much appreciated!

Remember putting the ole thumb on the vinyl record to slow it down to pick up licks? I learned the whole minor pent this way listening to a Page and Clapton album

There are three different types of guitar players. The first is someone who learns some popular songs. The next is someone who can read tablature and plays along. And then there is the guitar player who can improvise and create tasty runs over chords and create their own music. Guthrie is teaching us how to improvise and make our own music. Such a great channel.

It blows my mind that anyone can find anything negative at all to say about this channel. Guthrie really is giving you the secrets here... and it's FREE!!! When I was learning to play back in the 80s, the only way to get lessons like these was to either go to college for it, through books that really didn't explain it very well, or to be unbelievably lucky enough to find someone local that knew this stuff and was willing to pass it on. The instructors that taught in the music stores usually didn't know this stuff but if they did and there was even a remote chance that you were good enough to be in the local music scene, they didn't want you to know it. They kept these secrets closely guarded. I was lucky enough to learn a lot from Country music jam sessions where the competitive nature was low and everyone was just having fun. This stuff is gold. It's the true secret to navigating the fretboard. Guthrie should be nominated for guitar teacher sainthood.

I am really learning SO much from you Guthrie. This is putting it all together for me. I see my buddies playing licks and jumping all over the fretboard. Why? Because all they know are licks. This can all be done over just a few frets. I know now you can move up to a different set of frets and repeat it if you want, but it's not because I don't know what to do where I'm already at on the fretboard. Just when I want different voicings do I move around now. Wonderful! I have only been playing about 6 years (other than knowing a few cowboy chords when I was younger). My knowledge has skyrocketed watching you. I really wanted to know how to play any song in any key. Not just memorize a bunch of tab. This IS IT! Thank you so much. Now if I can just get these 70 year old hands to move quicker.

Guthrie, I'm 100% convinced that your "secret" is the way to go: this is great clarifying info. I think you provide an excellent example of this concept in a video you did for Carter Vintage two years ago. You were playing a 1952 Tele. Every lick you played clearly implied, supported, and enhanced a chord. It took me a while to learn to play what you were doing, but by the time I was done I knew this was what works. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

I fumbled around on guitar for 30 some years, actually played in a band but was really just a pattern player. Then came KZfaq guitar lessons. Shout out to the crazy genius Jimmy Bruno, he got me thinking for the first time about the major scale, chord construction, playing up and down the fretboard, learning the notes on the fretboard. He always hated references to the caged system, but it’s really at the heart of what he was doing. Your teaching is awesome Guthrie, thank you.

Hi Guthrie -- no one can ever be everything to everyone, even though I'm sure your approach would help anyone! I'm glad you're choosing to block out the noise and negativity, and continue being real. You are a true and rare gift, whether a player is just starting out or whether one has been playing a very long time. I know sometimes when you refer to CAGED and the chords/tones/inversions, and then all the layers around that (arpeggio, pentatonic, major scale), that you sometimes use a building as a metaphor, which makes perfect sense because what you're offering does build a oneness I can both see (as layers and as a whole) between the guitar and the neck, and also, and most importantly for me, between all of that -- and the ear and the heart. That's a level of freedom of expression I've only dreamt of knowing how to access -- until you. Truth be told, as students and fans, we're not only building new realities of possibility and expression in our playing through your teaching, we're also helping to build community -- and we got you! Those of us who love you, really love you! Your efforts help me to be a better player, Guthrie. You help me to get what's inside - out - in new and wondrous ways, for which I am eternally grateful. Thank you for that, and thank you for you. Love, peace, and forever music.

The system really does work. It has taken my pea-brain a long time to get it, but it is THE WAY to play those right notes that you hear in your head and want to get out. With practice it starts to feel almost too easy to play the right notes, but with my lack of aptitude it took me a long-ass time to get anywhere! I sure wish I had known about this at the beginning.

Aces, Guthrie, You're Aces ! I got it, and I wrote this wisdom down. Such a marvel. A solid approach and study course. Thank you. 1. Play and listen to the chord. 2 Then isolate and practice the triads within that chord. 3. Next play, listen to, and achieve understanding of the possible inversions that are under your fingers in that position. 4. learn & listen to the arpeggio for the chord. 5. Add in the pentatonic scales maj and min, 6. Then add in the full major scale and any additional appropriate scales. 7. Find and practice progressions i.e. blues I IV V or a min jazz, ii V I or a jazz blues I VI ii V and 8. locate the voicings for the various diatonic chords in those positions. This creates 'vocabulary' and familiarity hoped for yet previously unknown. May not cause tectonic shift, but most certainly will cause some climate change. Thanks again, Sir.

Usually great players aren't necessarily great teachers. You and Uncle Larry are because you want to share all that practical knowledge with fundamental theory.

I'm glad you're taking this stance. I have made really positive comments before on your channel and Uncle Larry's, and I had people TRASHING my positive comments. Unbelievable. You're awesome.

I’ll never understand what it is that some folks want to accomplish by being mean-spirited. Your “blocked” policy makes sense. I’m 67, been playing since the age of 10. Love your instructions. Appreciate your immense talent!!!
