Wow, I would've assumed a solid 14k (with 14k plating) would not do that. I'm guessing it's only the heat... and with normal wear the "flash plating" would simply fade, leaving behind the solid 14k color underneath? I also wonder how much of that color change is soot from the lighter. Your cross may have been held more in the blue part of the flame, so I wonder what the results would be with a jet lighter -- no soot deposits. Either way, good to know.

Hey Braden, I’m actually thinking to do that kind of test on my first gold chain that I bought recently to make sure I got a real gold, but thank you that you make a video about the fire test on gold and didn’t do it on mine coz i will probably will regret it. Hoping next time We want to see a durability test on one of your rope chain or franco’s, I was thinking it will be exciting and fun just to give us idea on what kind of scenario or instances we should only wear our jewelry or how we will limit ourselves not to wear jewelry specifically for the 18kt and above. I burnt mine. Not for the reason to make sure it was real though lol. One of my older rope chains I burnt the edge next to the clasp cause I had a piece of string from a shirt stuck in there. Couldn’t think of any other way besides burn it out, which it worked. Didn’t think the flame would harm it at that time. Figured it was safe. I only had it burning there 2-3 seconds though. I tried cleaning it every way possible. It wasn’t to bad to begin with. Barely could notice on the chain. The clasp though changed the color a bit. Definitely won’t do that ever again for any reason though

Hello! So i got a chain from my grand mother who past away its frkm the 70' it says parkerlane . i was told its no gold which i find unbelievable because parkerlane is a Chicago based reputable jewelers

Gold is damn near indestructible. Fire won't hurt it one bit providing you didn't get screwed. If your chain is plated it's because it's a cheap machine made chain and the plating hides the poor finish and poor quality gold. Most chains are plated, because most are poor quality. Zero well made ones are plated. On real gold the soot wipes rite off. If you buy jewelry, atleast buy the quality so you can hopefully get something if you sell. Plated chains bring melt, nothing more.

Sooo if anything, a reason (not like it needed one) to NOT plate natural gold, I don't know why that would be a thing anyway. Why plate 14k gold chains? and why plate those but not the pendant??? How about not plating the chains since (if) they are actually 14k gold!? That's sus af.

so why is the flat 14k flat curb plated with 14k? I don't get it :

I feel like If you lick the top of the flame across gold or anything plated or not, it will leave black soot on it. Like a Crack heads glass bulb when their flame touches the glass it leaves black soot all over it. But if you use the base of the flame , or like a small butane cigar torch it will not. Would u use like a butane cigar torch instead so its not leaving the black soot? I'd be interested to see just the plating change and not get soot as any thing will get sooty under a flame. Plated or not the top of the flame will soot up the gold or glass etc. And glass isn't plated. I'm very curious to now to changes in spike plate under clean heat. Also rubbing alcohol cleans that soot right up on most things. Prolly works on the gold.

I have a question...doesn't plating your chains in gold add weight? Common sense says it adds a substantial amount. I have a few chains from you so no I'm not hating at all just want to learn.

I don't like the fact that my 14k chains (byzantine and heavy link) are plated with 18k, but imo it's not a big deal if they are solid 14k

I got a few chains off Jacoje before and it was pretty obvious based on the color difference with other chains from other vendors that they had some extra plating. And that’s fine; I have no complaints about that. Curious how will the chain look once the plating inevitably wears down? And how long does the plating last? Those are the questions people who have concerns about would want to have answered.

This test saved me from buying a fake gold chain. All the gold plating burned off. The chain looked like steel . Can you show what happens when the a chain isn’t real? It was completely ruined.
