That was the real Ethel Merman. A very famous singer performer from the 40s 50s 60s. The coffee couple was a commercial reference to a famous Ad tag line of the day performed by the commercial actors who did them back in the day. The makeup lady is the writer's mother. Another very "inside" joke that I just found out about-The passenger stuck in the cab with the meter running was Howard Jarvis, who was head of a movement in California in the 70s to keep taxes and spending from getting out of control (the famous Prop 13) and was in the news quite a lot, so to see him getting charged for sitting in a parked cab would have been funny to some.

@@ofenomeno1381When did we lose our sense of humor? When society became programmed with the notion that every littlest feeling or thought a person has is the absolute most important thing in the world, and that we must purify and cleanse the world of anything and everything that isn’t perfect and nice and loving. As if there’s really a set standard for any of those things; they’re all subjective. Also as if the very same infamous name a bunch of these idiots throw around ad nauseam didn’t try to do exactly the same idealistic purification crap: A certain Austrian painter, soldier, dictator, and warlord whose name I’m reluctant to even use anymore because it has become nothing but a meaningless, hateful buzzword to throw at people one doesn’t agree with. He sought to purify the world of everything he didn’t consider ideal and perfect as well. Today’s parallels to all the ugly shit that went down in both the 40s and 60s are honestly chilling. Nobody fucking knows anything about anything except what random clowns on social media and the news say, so we’re repeating everything just as the time-tested old saying goes: “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.” But bad things in history are scary and we must hide them to protect delicate feelings-except for certain things we never let go of and constantly obsess over and use to justify today’s bullshit, of course.🙄😑 …I miss when the world wasn’t completely batshit insane.

Five years before the movie, there was an actual food poisoning outbreak on an airplane due to contaminated ham omelets served at breakfast. Nearly 200 people onboard got sick. Fortunately, the pilots hadn’t eaten the omelets. By pure luck, their biological clocks were still on Alaska time and they had ordered steak dinners instead. The pilots made an emergency landing and recommendations were made that pilots and passengers be served different meals during flights.

14:45 That is a setup to a joke they do a little later. Basically that is referencing a TV commercial from the 70s where a couple is having dinner at another couple's home. After supper they have coffee and the hostess asks if the guests would like more coffee, the husband says yes which confuses his wife because he never has more than one cup at home. The commercial's point is that she uses the wrong brand so her coffee doesn't taste as good.

I've watched a lot of different reactions to this movie, and I've noticed that people who have actually learned and studied English seem to enjoy the wordplay and puns more than native speakers. I think it's because they realize how wacky the English language can be.😁 A different actress was originally cast as Elaine, but she quit because she felt some of the jokes crossed the line. She did continue acting though. Her name is Sigourney Weaver.

@@ptthatswhatshesaid how can it not? You take a basic germanic language, make most of the actual words Latin or Greek, throw in the French influence with the Norman invasion and the Scandanavian influence thru the Dane law, and compound it by the English languages propensity to not only borrow words from other languages, but track them down in dark alleys and mug them. There's a reason that English, if it is not your native tongue, is the hardest language in the world to learn.

Why wouldn't Sigourney Weaver keep acting. She had already STARRED in Alien the previous year. And she didn't quit. She auditioned and had no comic timing, and so wasn't offered the job. English is wacky enough without you making up stories about Weaver and her acting career!

I was a teenager when this came out. There are a lot of pop culture references that would have only really resonated with the audience of that time. What also gets lost is that a lot of these actors were known for more serious roles, so to see them doing this kind of comedy added to the humor. No one ever comments about when the airplane crashes into the terminal, a woman throws her baby straight up into the air! Here is a link to the Yuban coffee commercial - part of the joke is that it is played by the same actress in the movie. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7BknqZ3l5izYqs.html

1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips. 2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for: Ted was a Captain in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. uniform. Elaine's trombone sounds like a cornet. One of the fish was a freshwater catfish. Hari Krishnas actually fly somewhere. Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport. The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer. It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane. The ambulance crashes after the plane lands. 3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB 4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😍😋 5. IMVHO Airplane II doesn't suck. Destination moon. William Shatner. FWIW more Johnny.
