Over the last 5 years Nintendo has been building up a library of games for their online service, quietly reaching a number of games for the basic tier that seems almost too good to be true at it's current price.

I honestly feel like this model is actually hindering me from playing those retro games even while I'm subscribed. A limited selection of games I individually paid for is a better motivator than an endless list I'm kinda-sorta already paying for because I want to play online.

Well, here you have the exact issue. Most of you only care about a few games. Gamers will go on and on about preservation, then lose it when NSO gets an update with niche or obscure titles, titles most people likely wouldn't pay money for, but they get to try them if they're subscribed.

Im on the boat where I think having both purchase and sub options should exist as they both have pros and cons and strategies can be made to make either option enticing for the user The sub option can still exist as a sustained revenue stream, give players immediate access to a large selection of games without nuking the wallet and can serve as a way for users to give a trial run of a game. For the purchase option, they could make it enticing by giving the user access to the games whole soundtrack to listen to through the console and/or via their mobile app and bundle it with themes. If in the really unlikely case they really took it further then adding additional enhancement like a proper widescreen support, higher fps support etc would be a nice bonus Granted this is extremely unlikely to ever happen but a guy can dream

To be honest, I'm not really happy that John is trying to convince Nintendo to raise their prices. He's framing it like "this is undervalued and they really should charge more for this so I expect a price increase". I'd rather see him framing it like "what a great service and value, you should subscribe". I mean it seems like he's more worried about Nintendos' loss of profits than sharing a great value with consumers. The whole angle just feels like he wants them to raise prices and they should, instead of focusing on the great value and why you might wanna give it a go.

Even Xbox with Game Pass has this as well, if you really like a game you can usually just buy a license outright for your system/account digitally. So, you can keep it once the severs go down like what is happening with the Xbox 360 store. Older Nintendo systems had the ability to buy retro games digitally. PC has GOG and some Steam games can be backed up and played without Steam after purchase. Even if they charged more like $15/20 per game as outrageous as that price sounds, I would still like to have the option to do so.

I'm 48, so I grew up on the NES and subsequent nintendo systems. I actually got my switch after learning I could play all those games from my youth for a yearly fee. As time went on and they added DLC's for Mario Kart and Animal crossing it made it even better. My point is, if all I had on my switch was the classic games I'd be happy, I mean we're talking about NES, SNES, N64, N64 17+, Gameboy, Gameboy advanced and Sega. That's a shit ton of games for $50/yr (or $80 in my case for the family plan). I hear people bitch and moan but for $4/mo what do you want and I just been talking about the higher tier subscription.

Nintendo seems to FINALLY be taking network features seriously. They've done a TON of hiring and outside consulting, etc to prepare them for the incoming hardware move. Plus, they'd be insane to alienate such a massive install base at this point.

I think ineptitude is a bad word as it implies Nintendo doesn’t know or know how to resolve this situation. They could fix this and their general OS laziness overnight but choose not to because they don’t feel it’s worth the very minimal investment.

I mean I don’t agree considering how few games they have added overall, not factoring in licensing and etc. but the price is much cheaper than the other services for those just interested in online play, so I’ll grant it that.

They should provide cloud saves for free. I get they want to prevent game save modding but it sucks if your console dies and you didnt want to cough up the subscription fee in the first place to backup your games to the cloud. Expansion pack games should be on the base tier and not cost additional money to unlock. Having an option to buy games individually would be awesome, especially if you dont want some games and only interested in a few select titles available and don't want the others.

Nintendo switch online service isn't necessarily a bad thing but they definitely could do better and they know they can. Number one they should give us the option to buy these games outside of the switch online service if we choose to. Number two they really need to work on fixing all the input lag when it comes to these older games on the system. Number three and let us adjust the screen size to our liking. For an example if we want to play Super Mario World on Switch at full screen we should be able to have the option to do that.

A lot of people (like myself) are capitalists that want to spend our money to OWN something we can also consider our own. Lets think of this service in the context of everything else in modern society... a lot of us are paying for Netflix, prime, spotify, etc... and if we stop paying that service is now inaccessible. Comparing apples to apples, I have almost no interest in whats on Netflix, but for annually less money, we can get access to 200ish games that I will get some value from. That being said, Nintendo has taken this too far with the strikes on internet archive services taking down almost every 1st party ROM. I should have been collecting ROMs alongside physical media this whole time lol... looking for a MKW iso when my disc from 16 years ago doesnt work, and my Wii doesnt work.. but its nearly impossible, and Nintendo has offered no option to buy or play MKW and a Wii. That's worth bitching over.

The debate between NSO and Virtual Console has a very easy solution: you offer both. I guarantee you’d have a lot of double dippers. And then you’d get people like me, who will NOT sign up for a gaming subscription, purchasing a bunch of my favorites. Give people options. I guarantee it won’t hurt Nintendo

Seeing as I might play 2-3 digital titles per year on the NSO service, I wouldn’t want to see them raise prices. It’s a hard sell as it is for me. Yes there is good “value” there, but it’s another one of those things that’s only good value if you actually use it.

2:30(ish) - "they shouldve figured out this Account System stuff a long time ago" ...yeah, considering that Microsoft launched XboxLive back in the "GameCube era", Nintendo had the entirety of the Wii, WiiU, AND the DS/3DS lines to finally get things the way they are on the Switch...and with all that time and Others' Experience, they still missed a couple of checks...

I'd have to disagree with the value prospect. Nintendo has taken the "quantity over quality" approach and padded their library with a bunch of games people will only play once or twice, if at all. If I have to pay for a bunch of games that I will never touch, just to be able to play a handful of games that I like, I'm not going to bother with your service.

I bet that we'll see some 3rd party games being removed unless they have some lifetime license or rolling payment setup, like a percentage of the NSO revenue. Eventually, Nintendo will need to remove games to allow more or increase the price of NSO.

Next gen will be metaverse based. It will be more like Virtual console but subscription will make buying cheaper If they give you a library it will be small. There's just too much money to be made They will also make it tied into something similar to how fortnight have people buying individual pieces of each IP. The reason NSO kept growing and was cheap is because it's used to generate a map of consumer mindshare. They will use everyone's activity to see what potential each IP have and what gameplay mechanics gets replayed. Very smart

When online came out I felt it was already too expensive for the lack of features you get with online. I wanted to have the option to play online and I wanted cloud saves so I got a group of friends to go in a 7 people family plan. The value for online has not changed since it came out. I haven't downloaded any of the retro players to play these old games and I don't see myself doing it. The only game I was considering was kirby 64 but then they said you have to get expansion pass and I no longer wanted to play Kirby on my switch.

Honestly, I'm pretty happy with the current NSO Setup. The online experience has been comparable to other platforms for me. Voice chat and messages are things I have literally never used on Xbox, PS or even PC. When I play online, I do with friends and I simply voice call them via telegram or whatever. The amount of games is good and I like that there's no fomo with things being removed unlike gamepass. I recognize the value of gamepass but I sometimes decide to not play some games on GP if they've been there for a while since I'm worried they will be removed and I basically have to rush the game. SNES and Genesis having rollback net code is also pretty good. The GBA emulation is very good and being able to finally play the multiplayer modes in those games is something new to me and a lot of others. I'd still love to have improved N64 emulation (it's at least better than PS2 emulation on PS but that's not saying much) and I 100% need button remapping to be added to the NSO emulators. The included DLC is kind of underwhelming but at least I didn't buy the ACNH DLC since I wasn't interested and I saved myself from buying something I was not going to enjoy. Adding the ability to buy games separately would be cool, kinda like Capcom Arcade classics (or whatever it's called) but I recognize not every game would be available for that due to licensing. The Wii/3DS/Wii U VC setup was cool in concept but it just didn't work. The more obscure games didn't sell well (or at all...) so including all of them in the same package allows the more popular games to offset the value of the most obscure ones and allowing them to be available and tried out by people that would've never played them otherwise. Also, having them all together allows me to play online with friends and ensure we all have the same games available to choose from. I pay 10 bucks a year in a family plan for the Expansion so I definitely get enough bang for my buck and I like that that is an actual legitimate option and not some kind of workaround. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

I think it's a stellar deal but also a great business strategy. The monthly cost works out great over the year, even without the very liberal family plan offering and before you include free games and the game voucher benefits. The pirates will also be missing out on the online features of some retro games, so it discourages illegal activity. It also respects and rewards players who have these games to play on their Wii U, as they don't have to buy them outright again just to play them remotely. Plus, it leaves open the desirability of the retro mini console bundles to be owned. The drip feed method of releasing is another live element that creates a positive buzz.

The service became worth it for me in February 2019 when Tetris 99 shadow dropped. For a good month I played nothing else. At the time the game was not purchaseable. Then a friend & I picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 at launch and had a blast playing it in July of that year. September was the launch of Super Kirby Clash, a guilty pleasure game that I played for a solid 14 consecutive months as I didn't give Nintendo a dime for it. September also saw the launch of Super Nintendo games which DEFINITELY made it worth it to me. While there have been two times where I let my subscription expire, I found myself renewing it weeks to a month or two later with my even upgrading to the expansion pass at least twice in that time. I'll likely re-up to the expansion pass when my current expansion subscription expires in November because of the instant access to Game Boy Advance games with more likely to go up on the service.

I've paid for the family NSO since it released, but honestly my biggest issue is the pokemon and animal crossing backups not being part of it. I've had issues with a Switch and almost lost years of Pokemon game saves, but got super lucky that it booted up for me to copy over to a new one. The NSO games are actually a nice addition, but I do sometimes wish they had the VC also so we could pick and choose games we wanted.

I don't mind the online game options, I just hate using the apps so much that I just tend to avoid them. It sucks that there are separate apps for nes, snes, gb, gba, n64, n64 18+, genesis. I'd much rather an all in one app that just downloads the games you're interested in with a decently usable UI to sort and arrange without all the different box sizes affecting placement
