This was the realization I had the first time I played the Souls games back in '15, starting with DS2. Before, if I was struggling in a game, I could just lower the difficulty or grind to unnecessarily high levels. However, I knew I had to continuously throw myself at the Souls bosses until I learned how to beat them. I still remember shouting "YES!" the first time I beat the Pursuer because it was one of the biggest achievements I felt gaming in a long time. This mindset of "gitting gud" has helped me in several other games as well, especially doing challenge runs in them. Well most of the time anyway lol.

Had this same realisation when playing Lies of P, since when I played it back in September I hadn't touched a souls/soulslike game since Dark Souls II on the Xbox 360. The amount of time I spent in calls with friends, figuring out how to defeat the first boss in Lies was ridiculous but I learnt a lot. I think Lies of p, and Dark Souls for that matter, helped me to unlearn what i was taught; that "failing will never make you better." because failure DOES help you get better. And out of everything to make me learn that valuable life lesson, it was a twink puppet game. Thats so cool, dude.

No joke, it took me 6 hours to beat the tutorial boss of DS3. What my peers were saying finally sunk in - that I wasn't efficiently dodging or capitalizing on openings, mindlessly hacking and slashing and expecting something to just work. I used the items the game gave me to my advantage, carefully studying the boss's moves. And the feeling of accomplishment when I finally triumphed over him was something I've carried with me for some time now. Then I got to the next area and uninstalled the game.

Sounds hardcore! Played something similar in Divinity: Original Sin 2, that game had an Honour Mode that would do the exact same thing you mentioned!

I'm so happy you've been enjoying Elden Ring! My first playthrough was with a Strength build guy 2-handing the Greatsword, putting Blood affinity on it. Now I'm playing a Faith-based character.

@@ThatsCoolDude I honestly never thought I'd even touch these games with a 10-foot pole years ago. Then I found a let's play of Dark Souls 1, 3, and Bloodborne on KZfaq. The show was "Prepare to Try", a group of 3 friends working at IGN UK. The one with the controller in his hands had never played these games before. One guy was the "lore master" (he had played the games before), and the 3rd helped keep things lively with banter. The videos were so much fun to watch, but I also got to learn that the lore of these games is actually interesting, and that's what sold me. So, the very first FromSoft game I finished and Plat'd was Bloodborne, which led me to getting a Hunter's Mark tattoo as my first (and so far, only) tattoo. I still haven't beaten DS2 and 3 or Demon's Souls, but it's crazy to think that I never would have considered playing these games before. Now I support those 3 guys on Patreon, as 5 years ago today they left IGN to start their own channel, RKG, and they are embarking on a multi-year journey through Elden Ring!

I was always online dueling & entering Tournaments in For Honor, and i had the same realization of the discipline cycle when i was casual practicing on hard ai Nobushi. I was practicing on this specific hero because i found my abilities lacking when coming against a Nobushi opponent. Although i'm not one of the top 100, i managed to at least be in the top 1,000. Which is no easy feat, but i was proud of myself. Specifically when you can predict your online opponents moves! When you notice this player prefers left & up attacks and sparingly uses the right. It's when you notice these things in split seconds while you're in the middle of fighting! Seriously a feeling i don't get when i practice actual sports lol.

Elden Ring was my first souls game and also my first Fromsoft game. They never appealed much to me because i dont typically play hard games, though i respected the music and style of souls. Decided to pick up Elden Ring because it looked so different from other souls games id seen and i loved every second of it. I had the same mindset you had going into it that if i went and beat Malenia id feel like i truly accomplished something. I did beat her eventually but it took me forever to find her lol, to the point by the time i DID find out how to get to the Haligtree i was so high level that she wasnt that difficult. Either way, i agree with what you said in this vid completely and i feel the same way coming out of it :D Cant wait for the DLC to drop!

I love hard games and especially making them overly hard. My favorite example is Crysis 1. If I play normally I can beat the whole thing on hardest difficulty in around 2 and a half hours. I've been trying to beat it by using wildlife by picking up frogs and stuff and chucking them at Korean soldiers. It's been 3 months and I'm still on the first level. It requires me to take a step back and plan ahead. Use critical and quick thinking skills and always act on the fly. I need good instincts and even better reflexes. I know about failure, I've been bullied constantly and I wouldn't change it if I could. You shouldn't seek out pain and failure for the sake of pain and failure but instead have a goal or something in mind that allows you to have fun while being in pain. Give yourself reason to keep on and looking at things from a different angle.

So as a massive Soulsbro, I just love how much the ideas of perseverance and human spirit are hard-baked into these outwardly depressing games. The Fromsoft games to me have always been about the hope in the future and oneself to continue on past unsurmountable odds. If you ever want to do more Souls stuff, I help one of the bigger challenge run channels (Gamersweekend), and can confirm people like Backlogs, BeAnd, Baron's Castle, JK Leeds, Press Continue, Meaty Jesus, and so on and so forth are genuinely open and nice people via direct interaction. Reach out if you ever need help on anything, big or small, always feel free to ask the collective community!

I'm glad I found the time to finally watch this. I share the same sentiment. I was discouraged from finishing Souls games twice before Covid. Once the pandemic started, I fell into a deep depression and honestly was considering sudoku. Then I got Bloodborne on sale, and while it was hard, I didn't stop playing until I beat it. (It was also my first Platinum trophy.) It was largely the same with Dark Souls 1. I know it's cliche, but I would go as far as to say the Souls series saved me. I learned that the weak will fall, but the strong will get back up. An important lesson for anyone. Life's not fair, but you can either succumb to your despair, or you can get on your feet and fight. Me? Fighting is in my blood. Great video, man!

Great take, it's something I've been craving quite a lot... A little challenge born creativity. I couldn't think of a better example than whatever the Terraria community does to automate boss kills. I played Killing Floor 2 on higher and higher difficulties to stress my movement, aiming, and enemy management skills under time constraints. But nothing else really does it for me. Tried out RTS, and it feels way too sweaty and about doing more at once than one person maybe ought to. That being said I picked up Elden Ring for Christmas and I am truly quite bad at it. It reminds me of how much I sucked at Morrowind growing up and how much I master Morrowind now... I'm a little scared to plunge into experimenting with builds in Elden Ring, but I might just watch guides to gain a little confidence. No shame in that right? 😮‍💨

Are you even playing if you do the same attack over and over again? What do you learn if you just go for the same cheap shot and exploit the mechanics? That's like being a stealth archer in skyrim. You aren't even playing the game at that point. You are being cheap.
@ThatsCoolDude
@ThatsCoolDude 6 ай бұрын
1) I don't exploit mechanics and even if I would it would mean I was somehow creative (hence the point I made in the video) 2) I'm not doing the same attack, there are multiple attacks + I'm adapting to *various and unique* attacks each enemy has (hence the point I made in the video) 3) You learn because you adapt to the problem you're faced with and can change your playstyle/the way you approach the enemy (again - the video) You can play the game and be creative however you want, the footage is of my personal gameplay. If that's cheap, so be it.

I was specifically referring to that lunge attack you spammed over and over again. What ever it was. Looked like a jumping reaching attack. It's like the people that win in fighter games by just using the same move over and over. I just think it's kind of ironic you talk about being creative and overcoming challenges and you are pretty much not even facing them in the footage. Waiting for her to not do anything to spam that attack in my opinion isn't learning or overcoming. It's using a gimmick over and over again to exploit the system. Using something within the rules of the game to to play in a way not intended. Pretty sure that move falls under that don't you think? By the way I'm not trying to start anything so I hope you don't get upset.
