Breaking down a solid red zone concept the Pittsburgh Steelers should continue using under new OC Arthur Smith. #Steelers #NFL

Thanks, Alex! I’ve been saying since Calvin Austin was drafted that if he worked on his route running, he could be more effective, but I also feel that the offense held him back because of the general lack of creativity. I understand that the Steelers want to find another slot guy, but I think if they used more creativity, the unsung heroes of the offense like Austin and Washington can be weapons also.

I appreciate you still providing great tape on what we could be with Mason and what a season of Kenny hasn't been. Regardless of who the offensive coordinator is, as the starter you have to be able to make the simple throws. Imagine if Mason had an entire off-season to work with the 1's. Mason is a guy who came off the bench for nearly 3-years and never lost a lead in the regular season this past season when called upon. The way the Steelers organization is treating Mason Rudolph is starting to feel like a corrupt organization and that is NOT the team I fell in love with many, many decades ago!!!

If entire fanbase keeps commenting on how ABSURD it is to continue ANY Jenny Pickett as starter UNTIL we see what Mason Rudolph offers in the LEAD man role

Dj could have almost been flagged for a false start with that little rock before the snap. But good route and catch and immediate upfield movement from CA3. I'm not sure what the problem is, but CA has caught literally everything that has come his way, and with his speed to threaten deep it just boggles my mind why they refuse to use him. And he's not a one trick pony either. Most of the balls he caught this year were on short to intermediate routes and a few were heavily contested and he pulled them in. He needs to be on the field more, simple as that.

It is possible, but he has to be schemed open utilizing his speed. He doesn’t offer much as conventional receiver as he’s not a great route runner like DJ and he doesn’t win contested balls.

@@joshhoward1289 get him on the move and have him read defenders. If its zone find a soft spot and sit for a quick pass. We have to start looking at other offenses and how they use their speedsters.

It should be noted that the play Alex illustrated was not in Matt Canada's play book.

@@514140mgk I don't have a copy of the playbook but this play was never called while Canada was the OC. It looks like a successful play so if Canada had it, why didn't he call it. My conclusion is it wasn't in his play book.

Why is it that nobody but me believes that Calvin Austin can be a number two receiver and be dynamic with the right coordinator calling the plays?? I guess it is always just me because I was the only person who believed Mason Rudolph would out play Pickett and Trubisky too😂😂😂

You’re not alone. I like Austin and believe Arthur Smith will see him as a weapon. We have some good young talent at receiver. We do need to keep adding to this group though.

Gap schemes in the running game, period. This is the only thing that matters. Practically any change to the pass game = improvement. Zone concept blocking is garbage, and AFCNorth defenses feast on it. Pgh SHOULD draft another quick+smart OL and continue to hammer gap schemes until the cows come home... why? because if you have the horses, IT CAN'T BE STOPPED. Evidence? See Jones, Broderick @ RT running gap schemes (in Pgh, for the first time in years) in '23 when the Steelers' run game improved 100%... that's not hyperbole. If Pgh drafts a slow-footed 395lb. OL who has never pulled or trapped, then you know their run game is going Zone heavy, and you can kiss the playoffs goodbye. Mark my words. AFCNorth defenses DICTATE what AFCNorth offenses can run on the regular. OCs that fight this dynamic have short careers.

I completely agree. We suck at zone garbage but is that the players or the coaching more? Two years in a row we tried zone and we sucked and halfway through the season we go back to gap and we start running the ball well and winning games. This isnt rocket science. Pound the rock it opens up everything else.

Thanks as always Alex. I love your stuff. Now I don't want to bite on everything that the NFL media spews out, but I do want to ask you about Justin Fields. How likely do you think the Steelers make a "big splash" (something they rarely do) and make the trade? And if they do, do you think he can be successful with Smith and our offense?
@Alex_Kozora
@Alex_Kozora 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! I think it's a lot more media chatter than actually happening. Tomlin and Rooney have essentially said not to expect a big splash trade. Fields can fit in this offense but I am not expecting a trade to occur. Not going to fully rule it out but the odds seem low.

this is a terrible idea. Kenny has shown he doesn't turn the ball over, and the only game he had without canada, he moved the ball really well and the offense looked great. I'm sure the bears scheme is terrible etc, but we know that potential in a young QB rarely turns out to be actual success in the NFL. Kenny has shown us the critical basics that we know are needed in a real NFL QB. With time and a real OC, he can progress and even become a star. Fields has not.
