I love the camera work your daughter did. She needs to learn the same thing about abrupt turns that I still struggle with, but she did a fantastic job! I would love pigs but feel I would have problems eating one I raised. I think we would be able to fit a small pig in the back paddock, but .... No pigs. I'll buy a share in one I don't feed, though.

I think your camera person did a fabulous job congratulations to her. I went over and watched your show again about the Jersey field trip. It doesn't seem that long ago but man you've done a lot since then. (Plus two more kids). When I grew up to have my own place I was never going to have pigs or chickens or geese. I would visit my grandmother's she had the meanest sow on Earth. One of my summer jobs was to feed that thing and they'd always(the grown ups) say don't go in the gate don't fall near here don't get too close. I was scared to death. Liked her babies though used to dress them up and play baby dolls with them. When I turned I believe 11 I come up with this great idea to get back at that pig. For breakfast I made her an omelette with bacon ham and cheese and said it to her it to her and laughed and laughed and laughed.

Face it, you are beyond homesteading, you are a farmer family. Praying and blessings. I say no to it all as we don't have the set up and he would have to build out of nothing and I would have to work out of no energy, lol. We get throught the house and garden. You guys do inspire, we may come day so chickens. I do love how you are telling us all this and you are wearing a very red Tshirt adorning, what else, but a pretty cow face, love it. Then you go doing it all while you barely look and are grabbing up a storm at us, yup you are beyond homesteading. Bless you all.

Just bought our first dairy cow! She's the sweetest mini jersey. I have a horse, a pony, a cow, goats, chickens, dogs and cats. We did ducks....never again unless I have a legit pond. We also did rabbits, but it's too hot where we live and so we just kept one as a pet.

A horse. Emma wants a horse, so bad. No way, because I see how much people who come into the feed store have to spend on them. “No Freeloaders” is rule one on the homestead. Ps: Great work by the cameraman while you moved those meatbirds. Edit: Ha! Exposure therapy! Glad to see it worked out and you can hang with the cows now!

My husband has been very patient with this city/military spouse. I've wanted farm animals from the very beginning, so I was given "rules" before we could add any animal to our backyard menagerie. 1. We have to be *willing* to eat it. Anything that I can't or won't eat goes somewhere else and there are always people willing to take animals for 4H or to add to their genetics. I have a reputation of being a good caregiver and I only buy carefully chosen critters, but if I won't eat it or what it produces, it's a No Go. 2. I have to be willing to accept the mindset that the critter, ultimately, is food. No pets. I learned early not to name anything since any 'name' helps me to bond with the critter. It's hard to eat a rabbit you raised, but it's much worse if you think of the fluffy bunny, Comeda, who was cute and had spots. Nope. No names. 3. We have to have space and feed for it readily available. When we had 7 acres, that wasn't as bad, but moving to only one acre means downsizing everything. You can't put pigs where you plan to put your garden (well, you can't keep them there while raising veggies), so space is a huge consideration. With rising costs of everything, being able to feed our critters from our land is more important, so we are re-evaluating plans. While having a donkey is something we've joked about, milking a donkey is possible but wouldn't cover the cost of feeding it or all the supplements and care it would need. So, like your potential horse, not in our plans right now. Best thoughts!

One word ,Yak ...................domestic Tibetan Yak ...................they pack, ride, milk is rich ,their hair can be combed ,spun and the warmest clothing can be made from it ,the meat is lean and the best thing about them is how docile they can be. Much like a Galloway but three times the size, ha, ha. I know it's not so cold there ,so maybe not for you, but worth mentioning. I love the breeds you have chosen also. Thats whete your wrong there a number of large commercial herds milking only once a day and JERSEY cows are the most suitable. The farmers that are doing have a great lifestyle. ITS popular in Ireland,UK,and NEW ZEALAND. Great video greetings from IRELAND. Fully understand where your coming from with the size thing as I used to have a lot of children's tour on farms I worked on .It was amazing how quick they adjusted. Also cows are very good listeners

One limiting factor for me is that I do this alone. I have to be able to handle the animal by myself. I have gotten used to being at the farm and not going places with the pandemic, and find I am at peace here in my gardens and especially with my chickens. But doing ALL the work is tough. I'm in my 60's and the heat this summer in Texas is brutal. But I do have a wonderful neighbor, and he is leasing 5 acres from me to run his cattle on, and we are thinking of getting a pig from an FFA kid (one that doesn't make the show auction) in the fall to finish out and slaughter. He doesn't want the pig there, so I will raise and finish it out, and he will process. Never thought I would even consider a pig. Also getting the nerve up to process my own chickens, so reworking my chicken coop to have a grow-out area for roos. I have raised alpacas for 18 years, and am now scaling back and turning into a fiber farm instead of breeding farm. Less pressure and expense, as well as less poop to clean up. More emphasis on enjoying my farm and gardens.

I went to a small dexter farm to learn to milk and the experience has turned me off from cows. The same cow that I milked, hated me, would purposefully try and kick me. Granted there was no milking stanchion and she had free reign to murder me. Now I'm intimidated by cows where I wasn't before. I'm looking into goats now.

My husband wasn't too sure about any animals, we now have 30+ chickens and chicks, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 feeder pigs and a pregnant Jersey cow! I am still pretty intimidated by the cow, so don't be embarrassed. I'm working on exposure therapy after watching your last video. I go out and talk to Maggie and give her some pets and scratches every day... Working up to the day she calves and I have to start milking in September! The thing I don't want? Turkeys! They also scare me. And I don't want to have a breeding sow and boar but my husband loves the pigs and wants to eventually get breeders... Too smelly for our 6 acres, in my opinion!

A bull is the only one I won’t have. It’s also completely my decision so I argue with myself about it because on one hand it would be so much better than AI, but I also just don’t want to deal with a bull. Fingers crossed I’ll end up with a neighbour who has one, but I’m also really wanting a Dexter and there aren’t many of those around. And see, here I go arguing with myself again, and trying to convince myself that depending on the property it might be fine, or if I get a baby that grows up with me that’ll be safe, and a Dexter is smaller so can’t do as much damage. Sigh. I’ll see. It might just be a hell of a lot smarter to buy an older cow that is no longer at peak production from a neighbouring dairy and take her back to them whenever she needs to be bred. Maybe I’ll do a deal with my brother and raise pigs for him too and then I could have pigs every year to feed the excess milk to. And I guess worst case scenario, raw milk is sold here as bath milk - for cosmetic purposes, so I could have a milk bath and have a glowing complexion 😂😂😂 Awesome filming job! Could only tell it was your daughter when she spoke!
