In this video I answer the question many of you had from my last upload which was, "Why didn't you use 4 wheel drive?" Well, in this video I tell you exactly why I didn't use 4x4 to pull that log. Also, I will talk about some upcoming repairs needed for the 1995 GMC Suburban GMT400. And, if it weren't enough, I'll also show you my homestead chickens inside their chicken coop and build them a chicken tractor (chicken run). Lots going on in this episode!

Putting your transfer case in 4 low will reduce the stress on your transmission and spreads out the traction, taking some stress off of your rear differential and u-joints. The extra torque and traction negates the need to "yank" just get the chain tight and ease into the throttle until it walks away with it.

Exactly. This is exactly what I was thinking and couldn't explain it better.

When doing the Exhaust gaskets send the Exhaust manifolds to the machine shop and have them flatten the mating face of the manifold. The heating cycles cause them to move around over time and that is one of the reasons they develop the exhaust leaks.
@alphasaiyan5760

Screw that. If you’re going that far just ditch the manifolds and install headers and exhaust 👍

You’re not going to “rip your frame apart” by using 4WD (hi or Lo) to drag a log on a dirt road. All 4 wheels would lose traction if it wasn’t enough to get the job done. If you keep the slack out of the tow chain or strap, take it easy, and don’t do something stupid like take a running start and yank slack out of it, it would be fine.

Good stuff Jimmy! That "Ticking" might be from the exhaust manifold but from experience, my '97 & '99 Suburbans both leaked at the exhaust gasket doughnut on the Y pipe. Craw under there after a cold start and feel around that flange. Bet you find a leak. FYI, one or more of those 3 studs will break if you're not careful. Good luck. Can't wait to see what's next.

Long bed trucks are the best option for a work truck, hands down. I've owned and worked out of both long and short bed trucks, and being able to throw the lumber or other materials in, strap it down or just close the gate and keep everything inside is, hands down, the best way to go. Heck, even a 10 ft board or three, will fit in the bed with the gate up if you run it from corner to corner.
@notsure7874
@notsure7874 Жыл бұрын
Usually yeah, but I want at least an extended cab, prefer a crew. Most of the time I'm not hauling lumber, and when I do - I can usually work with a 6.5' bed. The 5.5' beds are ridiculous though. At that point, just get an SUV and a harbor freight 4x8 trailer.

A lifter that sticks, is out of adjustment (valve lash), or collapsing will make a tick sound. A plug wire that is off the plug but still close enough to jump the gap inside the plug boot will make the exact same tick noise. When you change the intake gaskets on that engine, do not use the rubber seals on the front or rear rails. Clean them super good with lacquer thinner, not Acetone or carb cleaner or brake cleaner. You can use any of them first, but only if you follow with lacquer thinner. You need then surgically clean. Use the gray silicon (there is a big difference). Make 1/4 bead front and rear and a flat circle around the water jacket on both sides of the gasket. A little pea sized blob in all 4 corners where the head and block meet. The Acetone or carb cleaner or brake cleaners all vary in composition, many of them leave oily residue. If you don't want it to leak, use lacquer thinner. There's unlikely any need for those exhaust manifold gaskets. I never ran them on any SBC, Vortec heads or not. If you snap one of those bolts, you'll see why not to go there unless you have too. A small exhaust leak makes a puff sound, not a tick sound.

Thanks for all that info. The ticking is very slight and have heard since the day I bought it at 46k original miles. Hasn’t changed and I’m now at approximately 89k miles. I doubted the exhaust leak which is why I have yet to change/add gaskets.

Build yourself a platform that is wide enough so that the water can will fit on it and the chicks can jump up and drink. This will allow your water bowl portion to stay cleaner a lot longer. It only needs to be about 6 inches high. Then make another one for the food/scratch. This keeps the chips and other debris out of there.

The intake manifold gaskets on your engine only have air and coolant that flow through them. The 95 C/K truck I had was leaking coolant from that same area. Really though, you should just forget that engine and swap a LS in that Suburban.

My 1998 GMC Suburban had a ticking that slowly got worse over time. I thought it was a cracked manifold, but it was a leak where the pipe connects to the manifold. The sealing surface is very small. My exhaust shop removed the pipe and grinded the surface for a much better seal. 3 years later, it's still quiet.

Hey brother. Sorry if you took my comment criticism the wrong way. I wss trying to be funny and impart some knowledge to you as well. A.. I agree. Take care of your truck. Yes your suburban is a TRUCK. B. Using 4 Low utilizes 100 percent of your trucks torque. Ie pulling power ..ie. Ability to pull a load from a dead stop. Think why we use diesels trucks whenpulling large loads... Because they have high torque to break the inertia and get the heavy loads moving. C.. I've only owned trucks and they are built to work. Giving it a lil gas and loading it up doesn't hurt it if your not abusing it. I never said to full throttle floor the engine. USE 4 low. Give it a lil gas and a rolling start and that log would have moved the very first pull.. I'm a fan and sub brother. But I'm a mountain born guy mechanic and I know what I'm talking about. Only trying to help. With all due respect. Always read my comments thinking I'm trying to make you laugh first off. Cheers.. Trent S. Mt Shasta, California
