OMG!!! You're the hero! I've dug through the whole internet and I've been fighting the same issue for years! I live about 8-9 km straight from an airport, which might be far enough, however... I'm RIGHT in a damn axis of the main runway. I've been using higher channels on 5GHz due to some extra power it gives to boost the signal and it was fine, except sometimes it was going off just like that. Sometimes it came back and sometimes stayed off, untill I switched it manually. Now, since the airport is quite distant and shouldn't be interfering, then what might be causing it? After watching your video I came to an idea and did some testing. The result seemed both: odd and obvious at the same time: it is those damn planes that sometimes go quite low above me (since I'm in the runway axis) that cause my 5GHz wifi drop randomly... O!M!F!G! Thx again.

A customer here in Stockholm who uses TP-link WiFi Deco's has the same problem, usually every night around 19-22, when the planes fly over their apartment, to and from Bromma airport. In TP-link Deco's it is not possible to change which channels it uses. The sellers of TP-link Deco's do not mention this "feature". It's better to be honest, than to get disappointed, and ultimately angry customers.

I had a working aimesh network comprised of an Asus RT-AC68U and a TM-AC1900. I flashed the TM-AC1900 with Asus firmware and created the aimesh network quickly and easily. Subsequent firmware upgrades from Asus rendered the aimesh network inoperable. Do you know if Asus started cracking down on hacked Cellspot routers? Do I have any other options to get it working again? Thanks and you're doing a great job with your tutorial videos.

Interesting. I too had a 5 Ghz disconnect problem between my RT-AC68Us. I did solve the problem, but it had nothing to do with DFS channels. Turns out this problem is well known in the world of Asus RT-AC68Us. The problem is with the Asus implementation of Bridge mode (at least for firmware 3.0.0.4.384_20648). The workaround is simply to use Repeater mode instead. Same wireless parameters, but Repeater mode is rock solid. With Bridge mode I could have 5+ dropped connections per day. I have not had a disconnect since running with Repeater mode. Asus might have fixed this in later firmware since a lot of folks brought this to their attention.

hey man. amazing videos! im having an issue though i was hoping you could assist. my house is in Malaysia. and im living nearby an airport. im facing the exact problem whereby the 5Ghz band of my AC86U would constantly drop after awhile, and my only solution was to reboot both the main router and the node (i have two AC86U connected via Aimesh using Ethernet). I was so excited watching your video thinking the DFS issue is what's plaguing my router, then u mentioned that ASUS router excluded DFS channels altogether (true enough, i checked my channel and there's no DFS channel). Do u have any other idea what else could be the problem?

I feel your pain. I had 4 different Asus routers recently connected in a number of AI mesh configurations with Ethernet back haul connections. Original configuration was a GT-AC2900 as the primary with 2 RT-AC86U as the Mesh routers. Massive problems, then I scaled back using just the 2 RT-AC86U's and I still had problems, fyou mainal configuration was primary RT-AC86U with a RT-68U as the Mesh router. Still had problem. After A LOT of testing it was found that there was no problem with the wired side of the network. I was running into random wireless network latency locally, not a problem outside of my network. This latency manifested into multiple client disconnects throughout the day. Asus tech support was not existent. I tried everything I could. Lived with the nightmare for 2 months through many different firmware updates, still the same problems. I believe there may be a problem with the Asus firmware and buffer loading?? I had not had chance to try Merlin firmware, I just gave up and moved to Ubiquiti and my problems appear to be solved. So I am not sure what Asus is doing but BE VERY CAREFUL with the AiMesh as a solution, I do not think it is anywhere close for prime time. This being said, you may have a different set of problems, this was my most recent nightmare after spending a LOT of money on Asus and even more with Ubiquiti.

Bought a 5Ghz extender. I was in belief that after years, protocol would be perfect, SoCs would be perfect. 2 days passed, everything looking good. 3rd day some random signal strength drop with some disconnect... I went through whole home to find out neighbor's brand new devices near mine (apartment flats, same wall outlets along Y axis). I turned off auto to choose channels and got this warning screen about DFS. Moreover my old Sony Z3C was only able to see the first few 5Ghz channels. So I am stuck to first 4 5Ghz channels. Same frequency range with my neighbor. Whole ac protocol feels like a rushed job for me right now. Even after seeing AX released, there appeared an E. Wish AX stuff were affordable in economically questionable countries. Q.Q

What people tend to forget, because it's usually stated as he states it here, "to avoid interference with my neighbor's WiFi..."; well, if you're interfering with your neighbor then your neighbor is also interfering with you. So, even if you don't care about your neighbor, the problem affects you too. In the USA, the non overlapping 2.4 GHz channels are 1, 6, & 11 at a 20 MHz bandwidth. If you're in a crowded area, don't use the 40 MHz bandwidth on the 2.4 GHz band. If you do, you'll probably be overlapping someone and, as stated above, if you're interfering with them, then they are also interfering with you. So, you'll probably get better performance at 20 MHz due to the reduced interference. Also, while a clear channel is best, having 2 access points on the same channel actually causes less interference than having them on overlapping channels. Some newer devices are smart enough to realize this if you use the Auto channel selection; however, most aren't. So, do a scan of your area and pick channel 1, 6, or 11 for your 2.4 GHz band, whichever is the clearest. As in the 2.4 GHz band, in the 5 GHz band, the wider the channel width, the more likely you'll walk on another device. So again, in a crowded area, don't run wider than 40 MHz. Once again, the reduced channel width's reduction in performance will probably be less than the performance reduction caused by the interference you get with the wider channel width. Some devices, such as Mimosa radios, will lock out the DFS channels that it detects RADAR on so that it doesn't try to return to those channels, but will continue to use the other DFS channels.
