Although being the most succesful tennis player in the last 10 years, Djokovic is still not as loved as Federer or Nadal, in this video I try to break down the reasons behind this. Keep in fact I made this video 1 year ago.

I believe there's an extra "but" in the end of your statement. Sure, he has a very strong personality, but it's not like that is a bad thing, that is one of the key reasons why he keeps winning all those trophies. Sometimes I am amazed (in a bad way) by how self-absorbed people from some western countries can be when they take his temperament as a bad thing (this is not a comment against you personaly); he comes from Serbia, that's who we are, Balkan's people in general, we have strong personalities and we display our emotions, but we have norhing but respect and kindness for people from all over the world; just because you like Roger and Rafa more doesn't mean you should criticize everything Novak does differently; in the end, that is the beauty of the world we live in, we are all different from each other more or less, and therefore unique. I gueas my point is, love and support whoever you want to, but respect others love and support for their favorite even if it isn't the same one you pick. Sorry for an essay, cheers !
@srinitaaigaura2 жыл бұрын
Without a strong personality he could not have won 19 slams. Yes only sometimes he vents too much rage on the court, often at his own team, but I guess his box has been at the receiving end of it enough to get used to it by now. The beef with Novak goes back to the Yugoslavian war and some of the openly confrontational behaviour of his parents, and also because he was a bit late to the party when Fed and Nadal were already at their peaks. But then that is who Djokovic is. I miss the times when he would make light hearted imitations of others, he's much more of a beast now, but that is what has kept him winning.

I remember a match of Djokovic's against Federer at the US Open. Crowd was booing Nole, always cheering Federer, cheering when Nole's first serve went into the net. Djokovic had fallen and was absolutely scraped and bloody and his shirt was torn. And he took all of that negative energy, filtered through whatever makes him special and produced a masterclass tennis winnig the match. This man will not be denied
@shander212 жыл бұрын
The crowd in that match crossed the line completely. It wasn’t helped by the fact that there was a long rain delay prior to the new roof being completed that caused much of the crowd to spend more time drinking, which then made the atmosphere much rowdier than usual. It was embarrassing as an American tennis fan.

Novak has made a few obvious mistakes, but he's received an onslaught of hostility way past anything he could possibly deserve for his entire career. And it's plainly visible how guarded he's had to become in front of crowds as a result. The truth is that, mistakes aside, he does a lot of great stuff on and off the court, never trashes his opponents, is consistently warm and engaging with fans, and is clearly a good human being who genuinely seeks to connect with people. And most top players who've gotten to know him have said as much about him. Even though I admit Rafa is my sentimental favorite, I hold that Novak definitely deserves more love, respect, and credit than he gets.

His “mistakes” are what makes him the most relatable, he’s not afraid to show his emotions on/off court and be who he is. Federer and Nadal most of the time are just walking PRs. A middle class life in wealthy Switzerland like Roger experienced or coming from a professional sports oriented family with plenty of resources in Spain, like Nadal enjoyed, make success much more likely than Novak, whose early years were amidst war throughout his country. Novak is generous, funny, and an all around great champion. If he sometimes expresses a little more anger during a match or in some way isn't as "likable" as the other two, just think about his journey and try to think of another athlete who has reached his achievement level.

I come from a extremely competitive field (Classical Guitar World Class Concert Artist) and, please believe me, the tension and competitiveness among players is extremely huge, and frequently harshly miserable. Novak Djokovics started when Rafa and Federer were both very well stablished at his careers, so they had plenty of time to stablished a rivalry, but also a beautiful friendship. Everybody loved that a lot! Djokovic, although being an extremely gifted tennis player, isn’t that charismatic as Nadal/Federer. Besides that, I particularly feel that Novak it’s a kind-of shy person, also, sometimes (-IMHO-) transmits insecurity. But, come’n, ain’t easy being at Novak’s shoes. With time, I appreciate a lot Novak Djokovic for his talent, sportsmanship and because his philanthropic activities. With no doubt, Djokovic is one of the greatest of all times. My decision: 5 over 5 stars !!!

It really demonstrates that the finish was not really the point, and it forces you to take a closer look at the point as a whole, and everything else Djokovic was doing to cause him to land those winners. He is no doubt an amazing player, but his overall style of tennis may need a bit of a closer look to really see its merits. There is 1 REASON why the other 2 are more popular and that is because they came first. When Federer came into tennis a you either loved him for being the new star or hated him because you liked Sampras, Agassi or any other player. Then Nadal comes along and anyone who didn't like Federer naturally started going for Nadal. By the time Novak started winning, most fans already liked the other 2 and hated Novak because he started beating both of them and only got more hate as he has dominated them over the last decade (Novak 16, Nadal 11 and Federer 4 in GS).

It has become so much more significant than that my friend. The fact is Joker in trending towards being The GOAT if he isn't already. He is facing the same backlash as Nadal when Nadal began to threaten Federer's dominance. Ironically Federer's IMMENSE worldwide popularity is the factor that creates this phenomenon of folks refusing to FULLY acknowledge the greatness of Joker and Rafi and is the X-factor that will probably ALWAYS make Fed The GOAT in most people's mind and heart.....

@@tigeranthony Roger is way more skilled than Djokovic, that's why 90 % of the spectators cheer him in a match against Djokovic, and if you think the crowd normally supports the underdog, it's just showing you how great Roger really is ( just a delight watching him play tennis). On the other hand, I grew up watching Pete Sampras playing and I can guarantee he's way more skilled than Djokovic. Pistol Pete was ranked no. 1 for a total of 6 years, having extremely difficult opponents and cannon ball servers to play against ( Ivanisevic, Rafter, Krajicek, Agassi, Becker, etc...) He retired at 32 because of his back problems that were bothering him for about 2 years. It doesn't matter how many Grand Slams Djokovic wins, his skills are just not on the same level of Roger and Pete. An all time top 5 ranking in my view would be: 1. Federer 2. Sampras 3. Bjorn Borg 4. Nadal 5. Agassi

@@georgehav650 I strongly disagree my friend but I respect your choice(s) and opinion. We are QUITE possibly watching the three greatest players of all time playing in the same era. Collectively they are the three most dominant players of all time on all three surfaces with Federer most likely the most skilled and versatile of all time. Djoker is challenging THAT mantle as each season wears on. Feds dominance at Wimbledon (and US Open), Djoker's dominance at the Australian, and Rafi's unparalleled dominance on Clay courts dismisses any of the names from the past you mentioned, but that's MY opinion. My top 5: 1. Fed 2. Rafi 3. Joker 4. Sampras 5. Borg

I think when we talk about this we mean mostly “westerners.” This is North America and Western Europe, which also to some extent includes Australia and New Zealand although not as much cause there I think they’re a bit out of the way and they have a lot of Eastern European immigrants, I think they’re a bit more “open minded” or welcoming of him. I think it’s because he’s Eastern European! Westerners kind of look at him as a “foreigner” from “over there, the same way they look at especially Russians! They don’t look at him like a Briton or french or “one of them!” I think this was especially seen at the last US open the way he was treated when he accidentally hit the lines woman! To me he was treated really poorly and harshly! They gave him no help at all. I was watching here in the US and I think I saw a lot of hostility from the US tv personalities all of whom are “westerners,” Americans and one Australian, Cahill I think. But they were so hostile to him! I was really stunned! I don’t think they’d have condemned Federer or Nadal or Murray that way!! I have always got the impression they especially like Murray quite a lot when you compare that he’s won really much less! You’d think he’s win as much as Djokovic. Although I have to admit I think he seems like Avery nice person, and he’s Scottish I think so he has to be awesome! But I think they don’t like Djokovic as much cause he’s Eastern European!! They kind of see him as a foreigner who’s in their “club” where it’s usually Americans or Western Europeans who win!! He’s kind of invaded their little world and won!!

Sorry m8, look I’ll be first to admit that sometimes I don’t like him or I think he is not at the “class” of roger or Rafa. I’m very aware of that. However the lineswoman was his mistake there is an absolute rule and if he would have hit it anywhere else nothing would have happened. t’s a part of the fact that he didn’t control his anger which was also not very justified he would have taken carreno busta for sure and probably the tournament. U would never see roger or Rafa in that situation.

So it's an Eastern European prejudice as expressed by...? the media? The West? C'mon, he's completely solidified his place as one of the Big Three--never anything like it..58 grand slams between them? And who else has won any in the past ten years? Murray got a Wimbledon and an epic U.S. Open, and some tall Argentine named Del Potro won a U.S. Open...and that's it.. Ehhh on a per match basis Rafa has chance to still be statistical GOAT he’s just been by far the most unlucky injury wise from 17-36 years old missing 12 GS (03/04 FO + 10 other Wimbledon/USO/AO combined not to mention missing many Masters1000 as well) and also getting hurt in 2016 FO 3rd round the year Fed won. Nadal won 22/64 GS, Novak 20/67, Fed 20/81. If Nadal had much better injury luck and had played in 74-76 GS and no 2016 wrist injury 3rd round of FO he has 25-27 GS right now instead of 22 and 40+ Masters 1000. Novak def been the best since 2011 but Rafa still has best match win % in GS and all matches for that matter. It’s splitting hairs with Novak and Rafa as GOAT imo. Federer game is beautiful and his consistency is awesome but since 2011 Novak 19 GS Rafa 11 Fed 4 I wish they were all the same age as it would be much easier to compare as Fed dominated before they got there and when they were super young 2003-2008 and then as he got older they were 5-6 years younger so it’s hard to compare. Bottom line is all 3 are ILLmatic! They’ve all had super duper close 5 set wins/Ls in huge GS SF/Finals that could of gone the other way too!

@@max7even284 was not novak's fault that rafa's knee problem aggreveated. and also clearly he improved his game after 2011 which helped him win more. he worked on diets, exercises and most importantly the mental fitness and all those things helped him to win. you are saying yourself that even after 2011 rafa won many times against him. so by your logic if djoko wins then it's rafa's knee and if rafa wins then obviously it's rafa he can do anything.

It has nothing to do with Djokovic being from Serbia, but with his personality. No-one can deny he's a great tennis player but let's be honest: he tries to be the nice guy but doesn't seem very sincere. He tried to enter Australia on the basis of false information and lies, he's had regular outbursts on court contrary to Roger and Rafael, and he believes that polluted water can be purified with prayer and a positive mindset 🙄 That doesn't help his case, believe me. As for the question who's the GOAT - and it may very well be Djokovic - let's judge after the big three have retired 😉

Except that it has everything to do with him being Serbian. Read the comments internet wide which extended to flat out vilifying Serbia.
