It should be emphasized that we do not train ALL our horses to ride. We had, and currently have, several horses who cannot be ridden due to physical limitations, or are not mentally suitable to carry a rider without fear or stress. We love them and care for them all the same, and do not force them to ride. But these companion horses are so much harder to place, and are returned to us more frequently. Teaching horses who are able to be taught to ride gives them a valuable skill that far betters their chances of staying in a good home ❤

💝🙌🏼🙏🏼 Thank you for the wisdom you practice in your work; knowing who can be trained to carry a rider, and who cannot. And yes, it is harder to place a horse that cannot be ridden, as it takes disposable income. People often do not understand the needs of a horse mentally and emotionally, above and beyond the physical. People, please think before you buy - can you spend the necessary time and funds to properly care for a horse? Physically, mentally emotionally, medically, maintainence wise? Work with them even if the weather sucks? Give them what THEY need not just what YOU need/want? There was a time in my life whereby I knew I had to let my horse go because of horrible life circumstances affecting every area of my life. The horse was better off. It was not easy.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, and understanding where we are coming from! It's much more work to start a fearful and traumatized horse to ride than it is to only halter break and pick up their feet before adopting them out, but we do our best to do so because it leads to a better chance for a good future once they leave our hands ❤️

There are "those" that just refuse to research the long history between humans & equus. Like any other "domesticated" animal, the relationship between humans and animals go back to the stone age. This is in our genetics as well as theirs. I find it comforting to see so many people / organizations that focus on rescue and rehab. God Bless you all for working for such an honorable purpose!

For those who don’t understand, taking a horse for a ride is kind of like seeing your dog get excited for a walk. They do little dances, they get happy and excited too. We’re only 10% of their bodyweight so keep that in mind, to them it’s like carrying a toddler. So please, tell me you’ve never been around horses without telling me you’ve never been around horses.

Its sad how many narrow minded ignorant people are out there spewing vitriol and disinformation when they have no idea AT ALL what is truly in the best interests of a healthy happy horse. God bless you for what you are doing for these poor horses and thank you for the patient and kind way you tried to reach and reason with such people. Please do not be discouraged by them at all. Anyone who knows anything at all about horses knows they are far more secure in this world if they have good training that adds value to prospective owners. ' nuff said! Keep up the good work. I wish I was a billionaire so I could fund every worthwhile horse rescue in the world. Maybe I could pay off legislators to pass meaningful laws that would actually be effective in protecting horses from evil kill buyers and disreputable horse "traders".
@christawarrington3795
@christawarrington3795 Ай бұрын
Kill buying is not a demand issue, it's a supply issue. If there were no unwanted horses, there would be no kill buyers. The issue is over breeding from a variety of sources. 'Adopt, not bought' needs to take hold in the horse world just like it has in pets. Just like we also need the horse version of 'spay and neuter your pets'.

This is exactly right. We don’t live in a perfect world where every horse finds a perfect home no matter their skills, health, or experience. Horses are big and expensive and potentially dangerous. If they don’t have the skills to cope with the society we’ve created for them, they are terribly vulnerable.

Thank you for sharing the importance of good training to a horse's future. All the horses being ridden in this video look calm and content-a sign they have been trained using humane, thoughtful methods based on trust and partnership. I think people who don't know much about horses sometimes think riding a horse is always cruel, but this is not true. A sympathetic rider can make being ridden a joy for a horse, and a training program that gradually conditions and strengthens a horse enables them to carry a rider in balance.

Except old people that used to ride but?cant now because of injuries. So pasture pets fill the void. Hopefully, you can train some of your rescues to cart. Older people can learn that skill & then it's a win- wn for all .😊
@mountainshadowsequine
@mountainshadowsequine Ай бұрын
One of our horse alumna actually did learn to pull a cart with her new family!! Even so, companion horses and pasture pets are incredibly undesirable compared to ridden horses, speaking broadly. It can take several months to years to find our non-rideable horses homes, and they are the first to be sold on again if lives and situations change. Our longest resident has been here for 5 years with no adoption interest. Another horse was recently returned to us by her adopters after not even a full year. Both horses are unrideable. This is unfortunately an extremely common trend that several other rescues see too, and there are already too many unrideable horses out there for us to consciously contribute to the numbers. That why we do what we can to make them wanted by adopters ❤️

When Valerie rescued an older mare,12, we at first dispaired. Her owner had been sent to an assisted living, so she was left in a field for 3 years, until she passed. The "family" sent the lovely mare to the killpen. She was a sweetheart, well trained and sound. But a woman with a disability came often to visit the horses. She had always wanted a horse but couldn't ride. We helped, using the quiet mare to fulfill her dream. Now this mare is a Therapy Mare and has helped many from a senior home get better muscle control and strength. She enjoys the attention showered on her. We have used her for autistic & down syndrome to develop muscle and balance. After they brush n pet her they want to get up there and walk around. These wonderful horses, just full of love, just keep on giving!

Over time I've learned a lot about horse care, one of the things I've learned is that riding is ultimately the best way we currently have to exercise our horses which in turn keeps them healthy. There's bits about riding I don't like and personally I'm not all that interested I prefer walking with my horses but I also know from experience there's lots you can do to ride both ethically and with empathy so that your horse gets to enjoy the ride too.

Education and training is such an important part of keeping horses save - especially for their future. For me you are a very responsible horse rescue to offer those horses suitable this gift! It often takes a lot of patience and time to train the „untrainable“ or the untrained. Especially if they had bad experiences.

That horses end up in auctions where too many of them are killed in a most brutal way, is horrendous!!!! It's shameful that people who have no horse knowledge, make comments like that. There is nothing more wonderful then a relationship with a well-trained horse. It's a choice in how a person spends time with that horse. But actually being able to communicate with him is very important to any relationship. So many ignorant haters out there. Sorry but I say fk em. Most of them don't have a clue anyway. And you can't fix stupid, even though you try😢. What you people do for the horse industry, is phenomenal!!!! It was my dream to do the same thing. But sadly, health issues make it impossible now. You are huge blessings to all those you are able to save. Anyone who has worked with horses in any capacity knows you're worth and is grateful. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Honestly, people ride for selfish reasons. They want to have fun. I have a horse and I admit that I ride for the entertainment. But I also do ground work and walks on hand. Horses really don't have to be ridden. Human on horse back is as natural as chicken on pig's back. But if you actually listen to your horse, practice good horsemanship instead of forcing the submissions via fear and using painful tools and riding for hours daily... Then riding isn't that bad and horses can actually like the cooperation and spending time with humans. It's about the way we choose. Unfortunately, there are many harsh riders and trainers.

Unfortunately, there aren’t enough people in the equestrian world who put their horses & their wellbeing first tho. The number of horses constantly being bred, just for SO many to constantly end up in kill pens is a travesty. The way horses are constantly rehomed or sent to auction for selfish reasons is heartbreaking. The fact that the horse world is so slow to progress for the betterment of the horses is disappointing. There are a lot of good people who do right by these animals, but there are far too many who don’t.
