You nailed it! I’ve been working on the swing with my Driver for awhile now. The point you make is exactly what I have to do to drive the ball straighter. I have to feel like I’m taking the club through impact from an inside/outside path. I recently changed drivers and struggling to tame the bad shot you showed. Some of the problem is hitting the face inside near the hosel. If I hit high center most times the ball will be in play. I feel the outside/in feeling after impact when I hit a slice even though I’m thinking I made the proper path of swing. My method is to stay on plane and swing within myself with a good finish to be sure that I can control better throughout the swing. My previous driver was a similar problem when I got it and I had to learn the proper method since the swing and impact to low point is different. Like you said to tend to hit the irons much better and straight. Right now my game is suffering some from missing fairways.

happened to me as well, changed my driver swing and had some great straight shots but then started shanking every iron for the first time in 20 years. stopped playing for 4 weeks and forgot my new driver swing and went back to hitting great irons and my standard fade with the driver. change one thing and mess another up

Another horrible thing we slicers of the driver do, is start closing the face of the club. Which is tough habit to kick because every time I set up, I naturally close the face and feels so uncomfortable when facing correctly. And when we finally put a straight-path/ small-draw swing on it, it hooks.

This video might be perfect for me, I am drawing/hooking my irons but I slice my driver "mostly" (when my wrists get involved to much I can get a hook or pull). I am about to change all my grips to midsize grips, only because I get pain in my hand, I assume it is because I grip it to tight.

Wow I’m one of those few who naturally hits driver much better. After a few duck hook 6irons I usually make the adjustment but then immediately start slicing driver off the planet. For some reason it never occurred to me that I need to change the intention with the irons rather than the driver. Looking forward to giving some fade swings with the irons a shot at the range.

Flicking those hands at it especially with irons. For myself I came up with a new swing and I’m almost playing par every time I go out now. And for me it’s the manipulation of the wrists and hands. A feeling of keeping them firm and not allowing them to release until after impact, aka a held off feeling. That coupled with stop firing the trail side more than the lead side has done numbers for me.

Thanks was wondering why I only slice driver and all the advice people would give me was to use an impact bag and get use to closing the club face.

I really like a slight push draw with irons and a fade with my driver. It’s the exact same swing except I hold off the face a bit with the driver. As u can see with the path. Anywhere behind the bottom is in to out but as you pass bottom it goes out to in. Same swing but different points in the path and different face to path. The biggest issue I see is people open the club on the backswing and then have to close it on the downswing. It’s impossible to hit it well when you have to fan the club that much.

Every time I go out to play I'm either crushing with my driver the whole day and bad with irons. Next time I go out it's the opposite.

Thanks Ali!! This concept of low point ahead with irons and low point behind with Driver has been a game changer for me. As a general rule.., how many inches ahead and behind do you recommend!?

go to a trackman and only look at Swing Direction and Attack Angle and see which combination gives you a Club Path of close to 0. Two variables (sd and aa) you have to play with. There is no right or wrong. If you have a swing direction of 4 and an aoa of 5 with the driver club path is about -1. If your aoa is -2 you have a path of about +6 hitting low spinny draws.

When talking about a draw player swinging more left with irons, maybe add but keep your backswing the same? Taking lessons and that’s what they had me do

Oh Man, the struggles in Golf. Whenever you hit the driver straight, the irons hook, and whenever the irons are straight, you slice the driver like a mofo. Then you get conscious of your slice, hook the driver on the next hit, then have to re-integrate some of that slice to make the driver go straight, all of a sudden it's hole 18 :) Actual solution if you need to win at something, 2 irons. 250-260 yard straight iron VS unpredictable driver wins every time.

Very nice explanation! How do you manage to not look at the ball at impact. I see you turning your head to the target before hitting the ball. Any thoughts/drills about this??

I am having trouble with a little low hook off the tee. I try to feel like I am going to slice, to get the ball in the air.

I got fitted for a driver today. Tried 4 different drivers. Had 1 shot 315, which is what I would expect, and rest were mega slicing at 260 yards. My 2 iron goes 280 with incredibly amount more accuracy. I fitted for a 3 wood and was incredibly better to transition. At 300. 3 wood will be my driver and for pin point accurate slim fairways, I’ll use a 4 iron for 250 yards

any suggestions for someone who can smash a 3 wood off the deck 250 all day and even shape it both ways semi consistently, but can't hit a driver at all. it's a big hook or slice or hit the ground 8-10 inches behind the ball ?

I hit a draw with my irons every shot, and have really good distance control, but can't hit a fairway to save my life. A lot of times I will hit the driver well for the first 4 or 5 holes, than just start pull hooking it or blocking it high to the right. Yet on my launch monitor at home hitting into a net I will hit a draw with my driver almost everytime and have good launch numbers, spin, smash factor, etc.

I'm the rare type you mentioned that hits a perfect draw with the driver, 320 down the fairway A-1. 8 through 3 Iron has a 50% chance of going ob either right OR left, zero consistency. If you put me on the teebox of a dead straight hole, and said "Ill give you 1 million dollars if you hit the fairway..... you can pick an 8 iron or a driver......" I would have a 10x better chance of winning the money with the driver. Shouldn't be that way.

I must be 1 of the few who hit natural draws with driver & push everything right with irons! (As right handed player) Definitely will give this a go!

Very good video. But my problem is pulling my irons left of the target. That tells me that I swing out to in with a square club face at impact. If I do as you suggest, correct the club face first, would I open my club face to Target? Will this lead to a fade? Or if my club face is already square should I work on a more in to out swing path? Thank you for your help!

Sounds like flipping. Try pushing your hands through the impact zone in the direction of the target. That fractionally delays the release and you should see much fewer pulls.

I’m back and forth, I used to be really good with irons and utter crap with driver. I slowly got better at driver and now it’s back and forth. Sometimes one or the other is clicking depending on the day, but never ever together haha uggggh

When you “watch the ball” where do you look at the ball???? I was keeping my eye on the backside of the ball where the club hits. I started keepin my eye an the front side of the ball. I feel like that helped from hitting the ground. Maybe maybe not. But worth a shot

Hmm, yeah close but no cigar. Ideally you don't want to step on the first tee with a concept of different swings for different clubs, you need one repeatable swing that works for everything! This comes from accurate swing weighting and shaft choices in your bag which in turn, make the changes in alignment and path automatic, and not a swing decision.

@@AliTaylorGolf wow.....I honestly did not expect a response to my joke. I am one of those who have always been better with irons than driver but my irons play is still pretty inconsistent. I've always been a slicer with driver. Lately I've found some of your videos and others that have addressed wrist position with driver and found that I've been cupping. That has helped but I'm still only hitting half or less of my drives straight. I'll try this advice out at the range next time I go and see if I can get some better results with it. Thank you.
