I work as an IT-Guy in educational institution for adults (education to get back into work). We thought about aborting our courses for word, excel and computer basics, the simple stuff. Because: Hey, if you don't know how to operate these programms you are maybe just to old? And if you are to old for this stuff, you might be old to work again (very simple speaking). But we were wrong. A lot of people beteween 20 and 30 don't know even how to operate a computer. Why? Why should they? They might be working only with tablets and mobile phones theire complete life. Or this fancy computer in the last working place had two programms they need to use, for everything else is there a IT-guy. Just because i got my first computer 20 years ago with the book "computer for dummies", this is not for everyone the same. And this is why we need people to educate in scam prevention. Not only the online one, even the offline ones.

She likely didn't think of that. When you're in a stressful situation, your brain tends to switch to "get me out of this situation" rather than "how do I logically get myself out of this situation". I think there's few people who would immediately think to pull the plug on their computer to stop something like that. Even a part of my brain is wondering if they would still have access, despite knowing they wouldn't (I'm 18, so that mindset is not something exclusive to the elderly). It's easy to look back on something and say "oh they should have done this and that to stop it", but you never know until you're in the situation how obvious (or, how not obvious) that solution is.

Not everyone is computer savvy. She didn't realize they could see her through her cam she probably also thought they could continue contact with her the next time she signed on or something

Do you think that for a second they thought, "oh lets try to press power button on PC before calling"? NOPE And yes, solution for that call was to press power button on the damn computer. sry for english My grandpa was one of the best workers of his kind in my country and he was always abroad in CCCP or India. When he was alive he said that he likes working in India because people are nice and they are all working hard. He got many gifts from indian workers and bought lots of clothes, jewerly, weapons and figures that I have till this day (these are something 40-50 yrs old). His last jobs were in 90s, but I'm sure that there are still lots of hard working, warm hearted and family oriented indians aka children of people who worked with my grandpa. I alway have positive thoughts about indian people and I wish that situation in country will be better someday.

He works in data security and pen testing, and I am getting old and rusty, so increasingly I like to leave it to him. There is irony in giving a professional pen tester access to my PC to secure and optimise it, but it is an odd world.

Yes, to a point. Backups should be done and hopefully unplugged, but it can be hard to keep constantly updated and out of reach of anybody that might go to your computer and any remote access . Tge most important files may be treated differently I also think the situation was the other way around here. It appeared to be mainly the daughter's computer she encountered trouble and the mother took over from there, knowing that it was a scam.

An external hard drive, USB storage, or other back up will still have your files if you get a virus or if a scammer or anyone else clears the computer. A backup's purpose is to survive the computer's death.
