Just had the same thing happen to my mums Tarago which has the same engine. Got Noisy up top, very low oil pressure, was fine the day before etc etc. car meticulously serviced as im a qualified mechanic. Never over due. Decided to drop sump, oil pick up had collected so much gunk over 20 years of ownership. You’d never think being maintained and using only good oils! Have seen many maintained motors also gum and gunk up which had my brain ticking to take the sump off! more commonly though they love to use oil!

An engine known for reliability with extra-frequent oil changes - no more than 5,000 per on full synthetic should not have significant gunk in it; in fact, it should look next to new inside, even at 100k. What were your oil change intervals?

When I was about 19 I saw an ad for a Daihatsu Cuore TR-XX Avanzato R4 (had to get the full name in for effect, but not sure I got it in the right order), a trailer, an extra set of winter tyres on steelies and a spare ECU for £2,500 and I didn't immediately sell everything I owned to buy it (probably because even if I had, I would've been £2,450 short). I have intense regret about that decision.

There's also multi sensor kits, that have a small pump on them, they pull an amount of oil into the sensor block and then put it back in and they can warn you for water, carbon, metal and even viscosity. Of course, that kind of a sensor array is not for an average car, racing, trucks and expensive rigs, but the metal particulate... especially since it's on the RS232 standard (most are), worth it.

Love it did a similar conversion over 15 years ago on the first gen RAV4 the stock motor with a old disco potato t28 turbo and made 150kw on 12 pound and pump fuel You will find it on KZfaq search RAV4 turbo

I just finished changing the fluid in all three differentials and the transmission fluid and filter in my 2018 Audi Q7. It was a ton of work, but I know first hand the value in keeping every fluid in a car up to date and changed when needed. Maintenance is always cheaper than repairs. I wish there was more education on this in school. Even teslas have oil and a filter in their electric motors that needs to be changed on occasion. Sorry you guys had to go through this.

I feel your pain. I met a guy at the track once to buy his Buick GN. The car was in great shape. He ran 104mph in the 1/8. I paid him, then hopped in to race it myself and ran 102. On the way home I started hearing a ticking and watched the oil pressure slowly drop. Made it home, but had wiped a connecting rod bearing.

A few cars ago I lost trust in the local garage servicing it so decided to learn to service it myself. First oil change I did the oil came out like branston pickle. New filter and oil for a couple of weeks and changed the oil again. Luckily saved it.

I learned that not only is it important to change your oil, but it's also important to (at least occasionally) check that you haven't consumed all that oil. My '93 civic si with over 150k miles and a turdblower taught me this lesson when I ran it low on oil, then spun a couple main bearings at an auto-x. It was an expensive lesson to learn the hard way.

i just took my Corolla to get an oil-change and general maintenance today. (135k on the clock). Engine is the heart of the vehichle and needs love. But also NEVER skimp on brakes, tires and steering components. Those three keep you alive.

2AZ fe engines are known for their oil burning from crappy pistons, piston rings and head bolts striping. Here in America there was a recall for it.

Just had my Pajero NW turbo diesel in for a service today in prep for an outback trip. I like working on it but some things are better left to the pros who can check for any other issues you might miss. I have done oil changes in the past but not for years.

I hate to be that guy pedaling snake oil, but liqui moly engine flush seems to be a wonder product. I've used it on sludgy old cars I've worked on, I've used one bottle before changing the oil, come out black, and I put a cheap oil in, and use a whole another bottle, and it comes out black again. Put your preferred brand of proper oil back in, and you'll be met with a clean engine! I've done this with an inspection camera in the valve cover and it makes a world of a difference.

I like seafoam, or B-12 barryman... Great stuff. Marvel mystery oil has been highly recommended also as a GM top end cleaner in engines prone to carbon fouling

Australia doesn't have the Liqui Moly brand. But yes Engine flush products do work. Only thing is this was get car, fix new parts and go. Not get car, check everything, tear it down, fix new parts and then go.

heck yeah what i love about MCM that never give up attitude. yeah that sucks it a huge bummer to be at the finish line only for it to fall apart before crossing it. but that never give up attitude is how you win in life, you can fail a million times but keep trying eventually you will find success. i love this show so much been watching since the TRD lazer when i thought MCM was just a meme car channel for music no MCM is so much more than banging tunes and snail noises.

All my Toyotas have over 300,000 on them and I do 5000 k oil change and never regretted it ! We have 550,000 k on our old 2004 sienna and it runs great!

Had a similar issue with a Festiva with 248k poorly maintained miles on it. On the track in the 24 Hours of Lemons, it lost oil pressure 3 times before realizing dry gunk had broken loose from inside the crankcase. Dropped the pan and cleaned the sump. Rest of the race it maintained 50psi and finished like a boss. Wish you had the same luck.

Oils are tested at operating temp, if you do a lot of short journeys ( to work and back, the shops, etc) it never reaches operating temp so more frequent changeds are required. True for transmission and diff oils too. It is the vehicles life blood, small cost of regular services can save big costs down the road.

A word of warning too Gent, if your rav is fitted with k111 gearbox it wont take the extra power. You can fit the stronger k114 gearbox from the toyota bus

@@afzali4850 we get the ones from japan and they come with a k111 ctv box, which is a major fail point and will in turn break the engine when the diff explodes. i assumed this did too.

@@TEKSMRT no, but in the toyota stable of cvt's that fit this engine the one from the 4x4 reguis bus is the strong one(aka k114), the weak points if all that came before was they have a diff ment for lots of slip(ice), not slip then grip e.g sand to dry clear tarmac type which the reguis 4x4 was ment for.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often considering you guys always mod an engine with stock internals that sometimes come from wrecked cars, but then again it shows your knowledge and you do the right mods to not blow up your engine so you guys have been very fortunate at least until this point, its just a shame this happened when you had a time budget.

The 2ar is slept on hard. Go look at a KZfaqr called Frankenstein Motorworks to see what can be done. He made 270 whp with basically a Camry hybrid engine internals and customs bolt on intake manifold and header and tune from his garage. Basically it’s a stock <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="721">12:1</a> compression motor and he tune it back to Otto cycle type of tune.

always ran liqui moly or Motul in most of my cars (VW GTi's mainly) never had a issue, check your oil regularly every 1000-2000km's keep a spare quart in the trunk most 4cylinders need a top up half way through their oil interval.

There's another, probably more reliable way to make a turbo RAV4. This platform is related to the 3rd gen Caldina so there is a good chance a 3SGTE will fit with factory engine mounts. The first and second gen manual gearboxes are also related so again, a first gen RAV4 or GT4 box should bolt in. The first gen manuals also had a proper mechanical locking centre diff so no overheating the AWD system in sand
