The fun thing about this song is, that the album version is at about 220-225 bpm but they play it way faster during live shows (as they do with some of their other songs as well). Kahokiss has stated in an interview that she started challenging herself to play this song faster and faster, so apparently she's arrived at 240 bpm by now. I wonder if she's gonna try to play it even faster at future shows. But the band is pretty insane from a rhythmic point of view in general. If you listen to their albums you'll notice a lot of times they drop a quarter or even a sixteenth note here and there, which makes it sound a lot more chaotic and somewhat like it's accidental. But then they perform those weird rhythmic anomalies live and you realize it's all on purpose and they're just crazy good musicians.
@tomdonnelly6156
@tomdonnelly6156 11 ай бұрын
Yes, I think the song was basically a technical exercise to see how fast the rhythm section could play - hence the lack of chord changes and the like! One of the things about this band is that their early material (which is also great by the way!) was written conventionally on guitar by the singer, Accorinrin. However she says she gave up playing guitar and now writes exclusively using vocal lines and melodies which are then arranged by the band as a whole. This explains some of the unusual rhythms they play, so if you listen to a lot of their songs the rhythm is mapped almost phonetically to the vocal. Therefore you get strange effects like the song "Dirty Old Fart..." starting with what sounds like half a beat or something. No count in of course because they never do count ins,live they rely on visual cues or, and I've seen this with my own eyes, the sound of the singer's breath before she starts singing

I got a bit obsessed with figuring out how they come in so quickly - if you notice the singer, she does something with her hands & head movement just before they come in. They're all watching the singer at all times to know exactly when to come in, and I guess they rehearse the absolute living shit out of their songs. Even still, they are so impressive live. It's pure chaos but it's also rehearsed to an inch of its life

If you watch her right hand closely, she's bouncing the stick, not driving it. Such an elegant technique. I also noticed she's turned more to the left than you are, which lines her arm up with the snare and hi-hat so that she's just moving her arm forward and backward, not left to right. The drumming equivalent of economy picking.
@tonesthegrey6452
@tonesthegrey6452 10 ай бұрын
I was looking for a comment saying something like this. I know pretty much nothing about playing drums, but it looked to me like Mike is making himself move his hand/arm in two planes, back and forward as well as side to side, and in the reference video it looks to me like the snare drum and high hat are aligned so that the young lady only has to go back and forward to alternate. Now I don't mean to minimize the skill and endurance required to be able to do this for an entire song at all, but it seems to me that optimizing the placement of kit components and seating position to make everything as efficient as possible by minimizing stick and arm travel and especially cutting the planes in which the stick and arm have to travel and reverse directions at such breakneck speed in half may well play a role in taking it from impossible to only nearly impossible. Now this is purely speculation on my part and regardless of what all might be optimized the ability to not only do this but to maintain it for an entire song is nearly incomprehensible to me, but if you're going to challenge yourself by attempting this madness it seems only fair to look for any ways to economize movement that might help. Does anyone make carbon fiber or some other super lightweight drum sticks that might help? If so, attempting this seems like a good excuse to avail oneself of some. ;)

This is seriously the best band i’ve discovered in over 20 years. I can’t remember the last time a band excited me this much. They manage to sound chaotic while playing with razor precision.

I've seen them four times over the last year and they might be the best live band going right now, they're just supernaturally locked in with each other as a singular force. This song is always a highlight of their set. They actively discourage fans from posting concert footage to KZfaq (they're okay with sharing on Insta/Facebook) which is why that's hard to find, but you can find plenty of their official videos and live appearances on their official channel and Damnably Records (their label). A lot of their stuff has more hooks & melodies than this but they really leaned into the drinking-from-a-firehose noise blasts on their most recent album.

If this is a blast beat, then Lombardo beat it in 1986 and Charlie Benante beat a nuclear blast beat with SOD in the early '80s. That was just about as entertaining, as the original vid, especially right at the end! I can play drums (to a recreational degree) but my brain doesn't necessarily register counting so much. That you broke it down, called out the BPM's then made the progression to 250 was both commendable, and very much put what she's doing, into perspective. I'm a little gassed just watching!👏👏👏

I only tried drumming for a short while and I sucked at it, but that allows me to get an idea of what's going on. Unless the perspective is tricking me, and I might be totally mistaken, but both of you seem to play it with really different technique: - She seems to have changed her posture for the blast beat, like she turned a bit over to the left in order to allow her right arm to move more or less back and forth to hit either the snare or the hi-hat. You're sitting in a standard position, moving your right strictly sideways in order to hit the snare or the hi-hat. - She's actually using her arm as a whip, like in the linear drumming style used in funk, doing everything in a very fluid way. It's her whole right shoulder that seems to reposition her arm to hit whatever is necessary at a time. Again, mostly back and forth movement, not too much sideways. - In general she's way more fluid about the way she moves, she seems to go back to a standard stance whenever it's necessary, then she turns to the left again when she needs to do the blast beat. You're stiffer, it reminds me of my first tries strictly downpicking Master of Puppets. Just with these two minor temporary changes in your technique I think an accomplished drummer like you would be able to play it with way less effort!

It's like Napalm Death drumming it's that fast or a speed punk version of the 5,6,7,8's. Cool video.

Not much on KZfaq? They blew up in 2019. Heavy hitters like Ulrich and Navarro were mentioning them in interviews and Fantano put Itekoma Hits at number 80 in his top 100 albums of the 2010s.

ok this is not easy to do but like you say seeing drummers for so many years and you still get impressed. what about like prog metal like gartska, mangini, lang or really high lvl jazz like Gillmore, Harland, blaque dynamite. i want to see you push your speechlessness to the next level. i know you prob cant attempt it, like how i as a drummer will not attempt to play a tim henson guitar line but i would love to see you react to it.
