@Troy Kessinger I paid about 22k for the non-certified Si from a local Ford dealer. I've had I checked out by my local Honda dealer (while in for its first oil change) and was told everything is as it should be. I'm averaging about 32 now but I have a lot of short trips I make with it. I'm sure the mileage will increase as the motor gets broken in.

Nothing mentioned about Honda’s current engine problem of Oil Dilution and Low Speed Pre-Ignition in their “Earth Dreams” engine family. Currently, there is not an engine oil that works yet, Regular 0w20/5w20 doesn’t work. With turbos, high pressure GDI fuel, and ever tighter engines, the oil is being diluted down by “blow-by” gasoline. They are currently engineering a new oil for these engines “GF6-B” I think it’s a 0w16.
@SpringMtnHiker
@SpringMtnHiker 4 жыл бұрын
Is this issue resulting in shorter engine life-span? Can this be offset by changing the oil more frequently?
@kenleycarlton7562
@kenleycarlton7562 4 жыл бұрын
SpringMtn Hiker Essentially, thats the solution for now, quality oil, oil change often. But later in 2020, “GF6-B” will be released from testing and be available in all the major brands. They say that’s the fix..

The oil dilution is related to the L15's warm up procedure, not the oil. Specifically the cold start procedure runs rich as normal in an attempt to enhance catalytic converter efficiency (trying to get a high EGT faster). But this particular engine has a much longer warm up time, and the cold cylinder walls condenses the unburnt vapor (as it is running rich) where it seeps past the rings. The key indicator that this is the problem is that people only started noticing issues in cold weather conditions and taking short drives that don't let the engine get to operating. If it were strictly a blow by issue, then it would happen regardless of outside temperatures. As for me, I own an Si that did get noticeable oil dilution. I got all the symptoms and did notice how it got worse when I took frequent short trips vs driving it a little longer to warm it up and vaporize any gas in the crank case....More importantly the software update that Honda issued was effective in fixing it. From my observation, it seems the software update simply throws out the old warm up trim..It runs much leaner on cold start, and "warm up mode" is MUCH shorter (typically 1-2min at -15C). I haven't been able to detect oil dilution since even after reverting to my shorter commute. As for LSPI...the problem is in its name. If don't you put your engine at high load while at low rpm it won't happen. That's a complicated way of saying: DOWNSHIFT if you want to accelerate (it only comes in a manual anyways, there's no computer that could even induce this problem). To me having LSPI because you are flooring it at 2000rpm, seems more like driver error than an actual mechanical issue...Yes marketing may say "you get peak torque at 2100rpm", but no person in their right mind would lug their engine that badly.

People dont realise this but if your trying the civic si there are two cars that are better....soon to be three. The Elantra GT N line is an amazing car, its faster than the civic si, and it has incredible handling i mean incredible. Its almost on the veloster N level. I can get one with the manual in canada starting at 28 k. The Si starts at 30999. Thats 3 grand difference. The 1.6T is a much better motor than the 1.5T. The Veloster R spec in the USA or just the 1.6T its called in canada can hit 60 in 5.9-6 secomds flat. Thise start here at 27 grand and 500 bucks for the lightweight 18 inch wheels with pilot sport 4 tires. Also the new 2021 elantra gt and elantra are coming out both with N line treatment. Might get the 2.0T base engine from the USA at 250 hp. The full veloster N is either getting a 2.0T with a bunp in power or getting the 2.5T with 304 PS and 311 ft lbs. The new elantra N sedan is coming too. Civic better up their game because the koreans are coming

Outstanding car! Have owned many high-end German cars, but this is so much more fun. Have had a 20 for the last four weeks (now with 2k miles). Only 2k more than the new Si I purchased in 06. Amazing! A few areas for improvement include a head unit screen that scratches very easy - Honda , see Apple, maybe they will show you how to buy/install gorilla glass. None of my other vehicles have ever scratched-I am very careful. No auto dimming rearview or Homelink, thats just being short sighted. The sub is terrible. Had to install a JL Audio sub in the trunk. Final Honda quirk is lack of LED brake and turn signals (everything else outside is LED)- that is so cheap! Switched out all of the interior and brake/turns to LED. Still, overall a blast to drive.

@@BobO-zo2bi you might want to reevaluate your opinion on Hyundai's. Their not the same cars from 10years ago(which were shit) hell even 5years ago. They stole(hired) the guy who made all of BMW's "M" Performance line cars. They had him make up all the "N" line Hyundai cars like the Veloster and i30. They also hired the same guy who designed all the Audi cars (notice a resemblance in the two car companies front bumpers much?). Hyundai has the *best* warranty in America period. 10yr/100k powertrain, 7yr UNLIMITED miles anti perforation, 5yr UNLIMITED miles Roadside Assistance(big plus here), and 5yr/60k mile new car warranty. No other car company does this Period. Why would a company that supposedly is a "beater" and falls apart have such a unbelievable warranty on It. I'm sorry to come off rude but you sound like a Honda fan boy who doesn't actually know any factual information and just says what he feels. Hondas have fell off in reliability over the years trust me, they are not what they used to be. Don't believe me right? Do yourself a favor and Google "Top 10 most reliable car brands" and tell me what you see. Oh what's that's? Hyundai and Kia are 2nd and 3rd meanwhile wheres Honda? Not beating them two that's for sure. Honestly I thought the same as you about Hyundai's until I was inside a new one and let me tell you they have made huge strides. Ive seen some comments in here that got it right. "Most fun car to have under 30k" should be the Hyundai Veloster "N". @@eagle25311 Have as much to waste? You must not realize Honda has been having problems left and right and not what they used to be bud. Honestly I'd bet a paycheck you own an Si and trying to justify your purchase. If you enjoy it that's all that matters, but putting down another car company to justify your decision is wrong. Do yourself a favor and Google "top 10 most reliable car brands". Ohhh wheres Honda? Not at the top anymore that's for sure. And would ya look at that who is but Hyundai, Genesis,and Kia. All 3 of these car brand have stepped up in strides lately. I can go on and on how Honda is truly shit now man. Oil dilution problems, small turbo engines that eventually will blow, crv having to have timing replaced at 40k, gas in the oil creating a nasty smell in Cabin? Shall I go on? If you haven't noticed Honda isn't what they used to be your either a fan boy or just Never do any actually homework and reading. ln gonna go with a little of both. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are both doing really well, better than Honda. Go to a Hyundai dealership and test a drive a Veloster N and tell me it's not an incredible car for the money and much better car in every way than an Si(it's not even on it's level and compared to a type r actually that's 10k more lol). Go sit in and test drive a g70 or 80 and tell me the interior isn't leaps better than any Honda "luxury" sedan. Seeing what Hondas response was if they fixed known issues like Rev hang and Oil dilution for 2020 alone was utter ridiculous. "No we did not fix rev hang". "We release a software upgrade that helps but doesn't cure the Oil problem". Lol like what? And don't sit there and tell me "well I haven't ran into any problems". Understand this issue *still* has not been fixed and their currently trying a special type of oil for it to work correctly. So your slowly killing that engine. Lol if that isn't enough to steer clear Idk what is. Idk why I even try this prob goes in one ear and out the other. However if you've done some actually investigating and factual reading, other than spewing out shit other people say or catches on. You would have known it was Hyundai's agenda and plan all along to at first sell us shitty cheap beater cars. See they new they didn't have a following here In America. So when they started offering their cars here in the early 80s, they were made cheap and just to get people from point a to b. They did this for decades while Americans bought Alot of them(look on the road there are tons of Hyundai's out there) bc they were so cheap. Until they made enough money to make much higher quality and luxury care at an affordable price. Which is the current time were in. Bet you didn't know this either. New Hyundai's have more German roots and feel to them than anything really. Why? They brought over and hired the guy who created all the BMW "M" performance cars to create Hyundai's "N" line of cars. They also hired the guy who designed all the Audi cars to design their Hyundai cars. On top of that they have a factory down the road from the Nurburgring track in Germany. Where they test and tune their cars before final production is rolled out. So they have more a German look and feel to them more than anything. Take the front badge off any new Hyundai, looks like an Audi front grill right? I can keep going but hopefully I provided enough information for you to realize how ignorant that comment was of yours about Hyundai, I'm sorry. Next time do your homework before looking like a fool please. I'm not trying to be rude here. I work construction (Union Local 40 Manhattan Ironworker) and drive a commute around 90mi a day. I'd take a Hyundai over Honda at this given current time. This is just my opinion but the new Civics I don't like the look of one bit. HDMI exhaust, ugly vents that serve no purpose and shitty infotainment system. Take me back to the older naturally asperated Si's. Yea to me Hondas been dead for quite sometime since getting rid of prelude, s2000 and the Acuras as well. Sad. However this is simply my opinion and everyone likes what they like, that's all that should matter.

I have the 2018 Si Sedan, and at nearly two years in, I still love it! I required a sporty manual transmission vehicle with enough storage to put some specific items in, including a foldable 6' table, chair, luggage, and more at the same time, which kicked out a number of competitors, including the Ford Focus ST which I loved testing and the VW GTI. My choice came down to the Si and the Subaru WRX, and the Si was far less expensive, but is a much better daily driver, as the WRX HAS TO BE driven hard. The added bonus of fuel efficiency, which gives me consistent highway MPG over 40 MPG (highest tank, hand calculated, is 45MPG) and speed limits are a suggestion to me. We have too much in common now, Civic Si, Steelers (by birthright) and Rush (seen 5 tours).

I own a 2017 and a freaking love driving the thing every day. I just get in it and drive for fun. The clutch setup is strange and there isn’t much feel to it. You learn to deal with it, but it’s very inconsistent day to day. If it’s cold it feels different, if you adjust your seat it feels different, if the A/C is blasting on a hot summer day it feels different, etc... He said this car is well put together and doesn’t have rattles or noises. Brand new this is true, but as you put some miles on it and break some things in, you’ll notice lots of strange noises. You start modifying (which you will with this car if you buy it) and tearing apart plastic pieces and clips, you’ll start hearing some rattles for sure. The quality is great, but Honda made plenty of sacrifices to meet that 25k price point. The car pulls effortlessly at highway speeds above 3500 RPM. It’ll surprise cars with engines twice as big from highway rolls or aggressive passing maneuvers.
@skifree0
@skifree0 4 жыл бұрын
The clutch inconsistencies is annoying, but pretty understandable. First off, it's a typical Honda hydro clutch, and in the cold the fluid tends to get thicker. I've heard that taking off the CDV may help with this as a side effect, but I just learned to deal with it. The AC clutch feel is actually just because it's a small engine. Had the same issues with a B16 Honda a few years ago. Honda small displacement engines just don't have ANY torque at low rpm, so even the compressor is putting noticeable load on the engine.

I owned a '15 GTI (no LSD), now in a 2020 Si. GTI felt like it had more grunt from a standstill, but from a roll the power is basically the same. Much "sportier" seating position in the SI, shift pattern is tighter and throws are shorter, and the close ratio transmission in the SI is way more fun. Top of 2nd in the GTI was 70mph, in the SI 2nd tops out around 55. If I had both available and I was heading for so e Twisties, I would take the Si. If I already owned one or the other, the difference would not be enough to make me switch. But major mechanical issues with the GTI out of warranty was enough to make me switch 👍

@@st4xor Thanks for the comparison. I'll really have to take a drive and see. I, too, had a weird whine develop in the transmission. Luckily, I only had 36k miles on the car, and it was fixed under warranty.. Everything still worked fine with the noise, but it get louder with speed. The dealer took over a month to try to figure it out. Actually, they said it was VW that tried to diagnose the problem, even sending in an engineer from the factory. Ultimately, I got a new 6 speed. Everything else had been great. (I noticed VW dropped the warranty from 5/60 to 4/48 for 2020.) Have fun in your Si!

I'm a Honda "fanboi" from the 90's. I just can't forgive Honda for killing the Prelude, Integra and S2000, and generally ruining the majority of the Acura line (I owned a Legend, a few Integras and a Vigor back in the day) I agree, Honda is kind of making a "comeback", the CTR, this Si and the NSX shows they are trying to give the more loyal Honda fans something to enjoy. I considered the Si when it first came out (2017?) but ended up with a new GTI instead. Now that FWD cars have "REAL" power compared to the 90's, there's an evil side....traction loss. In WA state it is a big deal as the weather can be bad 50% of the time or more. I now own a Q60 AWD and wouldn't go back to Honda unless they come out with an AWD sporty car like the Golf R. I love the AWD traction, it's a point-and-shoot deal in any weather. I would also like to give Toyota props for turning things around. In fact, I would argue that Toyota is doing a better job than Honda in turning around. We looked at the Civic Hatchback Sport, and ended up with a 2020 Corolla Hatchback in Blue Flame for my wife's daily driver.

Jason W If yours the Golf R or GTI? I do like the interior and ride/handling of the Corolla. its very luxurious similar to Lexus because they made the frame very solid. Also I wanted a Golf myself but two people beat me to the two local 2015 TDI Golf's at my VW dealer. The one year GTI also sold quickly. i wound up with Sport Hatchback and it had too much road noise before I fixed it. $20,800

@@jamesmedina2062 I had leased a 2016 GTI. An amazing car, but it was in the shop often. I really wanted my wife to buy a Sport Hatchback, but it didn't resonate with her. I am very happy that Honda and Toyota are bringing back hatches, now if they'd bring back 2 door hatches that'd be even better!

Jason W You can't go wrong to daily drive either one and the Toyota will be more breezy to maintain. I'm a little envious. I was not a fan of the audio but overall love the interior. On the Civic with 17 inch wheels and low profile 40 series tires, the Sport Hb is crazier and fun on freeway driving but the engine has less grunt from a stop than others. I built my exhaust and it now breathes well above 3k to redline but this is not needed usually. If my car is often overkill powerwise can you imagine the Type R? That is serious racehorse overkill! Btw we had two Integras and three Legends, then later the lettered cars: MDX, CL, TL, newer TL, TLX. Around town the Legends were king because of the easy torque of the V6. The Integras handled like a dream but were pretty rough over bumps. Its funny you and I both went VW as well. I owned 3 Passats, never my dream car: GTI. I fear timing issues and carbon, but I wish I had the comfort. In Civics only the Type R has great seats rivaling Golf

There are literally 10+ other cars I could mention, but one other example I'll give is that the MK8 will be arriving by the end of the year, according to reports I've read. Should be a little under $30k and will be better in every way, except not available as a 2-door anymore.

@@mohamedalkaboom Not only have I read the pertinent reviews, I've driven them. I don't dispute that the SI might be more fun on a tight track. What percentage of new SI buyers track their cars? Is it even 1%? Seriously doubt it. Darting from stoplight to stoplight is the overwhelmingly typical use case, and for that particular use case, Accord Sport 2.0T > Civic SI. And when you're not darting around city streets, the Accord is much more useful. Don't have to ask other people to help you move certain bulky items like large TVs. @@garykang1948 Morning rush traffic going away from core (dundas ramp to steels on dvp) which is +8min delay I can get 6.0L/100km. However, it requires hyper-milling...using the engine to slow down and giving yourself space. Easy to do, just down shift by the 10th. While coasting, if 40km/hr down-shift to 4th gear, once you get down to 30km/hr downshift into 3rd gear...etc (coasting means your in gear without using gas). At below 20km/hr it's too slow to take advantage of engine deactivation..so when going that slow, do whats comfortable. The car will pull on it's own 15km/hr in 3rd gear, 10km/hr in 2nd gear, 6km/hr in 1st gear without any need for gas. So in really heavy traffic, i'm driving only with my left feet..since you can control your speed depending on which gear you're in (need to shift slow to make it smooth)... btw, I only use shell premium, I find the car pulls better at ultra low rpm (below 1000rpm) with that blend.
