Oh, you are in for a ride. He’s spectacular. One of my favorite musicians ever. His studio albums are beautifully recorded. Keep going on your exploration of Lyle. There’s so much more to discover. Listen to a song called Church next. He’s definitely country, but an alternative to much of what modern country is. Glad to see him get a rare standing ovation from Harri!

Call him a 'Storyteller' that has a unique voice, stunning musicianship with a gift for words and an intelligent showmen who loves to show off his backup band while sporting an odd haircut... And seeing him Live and hearing his between song banter and dry humor is worth the price of the ticket alone.

That style of music is called Western Swing. It was developed in the 1930s in the southwest of the USA. It's a mix of traditional Cowboy Music, Mariachi, Blues and Jazz. The most featured instrument is the fiddle. Important bandleaders were Bob Wills, Milton Brown and Spade Cooley. Mostly Bob Wills, though. Bands that are playing this kind of music today are, amongst others, the Time Jumpers, Asleep at the Wheel, the Quebe Sisters and the Riders in the Sky.

I have been in love with Lyle for over 30 years. Some of the best concerts I have ever gone to and I have seem him several times. I first read about him in the Los Angeles Times they described him as a cross between Hank Williams and Elvis Costello so I knew I had to check him out. If you ever get the chance to see him live it is amazing. You will musically experience western swing, beer joint music and then you get taken to church with the gospel choir. Make sure to check out other videos with him and Francine Reed, you will not be disappointed. Plus he has that dry sense of humor.

The first time I caught Lyle live was at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, TX (a very small listening room at the University of Texas). He was backed up only by his cellist, John Hagen, and a percussionist. He was performing songs from his first, and only album at the time, and I was absolutely floored by how strong his performance was, and by the strength of his songwriting! I have a good friend named, Alison Rogers, who is also a gifted singer-songwriter. She and her husband, Willis Alan Ramsey ( a legendary Texas songwriter) co-wrote this incredible song along with Lyle.

Seeing Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, in the early 90s at Kalamazoo State Theatre was one my wife and I enjoyed very much. Don’t have the exact date but at this Theatre on the “Joshua. Judges. Ruth” tour. The songwriting and musicianship were top notch. ‘Til the Next time” is a great tune about things that are often said during some of our more shallow Conversations and encounters with the family of the deceased. i A great video came out for “Church,” a complicated and funny song when Lyle tries to end the service after a couple of hours. What transpired during that dinner cracked me up as well. Thank you for show casing so much of Lyle Lovett, Harri!

I saw him at the Marcus Amphitheater on the Milwaukee Lakefront during a joint tour with Bonnie Raitt. I can tell you the exact date, September 9, 1992. I know that date because my friend had an extra ticket to the Brewers game that night, which was very likely going to be the night that Robin Yount got hit 3000 (it was). A friend and I had tickets to the concert and it was a major toss-up but I decided to go to the concert since buying tickets was my idea in the first place. Incredible concert performed by 2 great talents.

Lyle Lovett has so many great songs it's hard to narrow down what to suggest. He and Al Green recorded a duet of "Funny How Time Slips Away" (written by Willie Nelson) that you'll like. You can't go wrong with any era of Lyle but my personal favorites are probably his 1994 album I Love Everybody with songs like "Penguins" and "Record Lady" and his 2003 album My Baby Don't Tolerate with songs like "In My Own Mind" and "Working too Hard."

One of the artists of whom I own EVERY ONE of their albums. Though considered Country, his muse goes so many places it is amazing to follow. For a full album review, I recommend "Joshua Judges Ruth", an absolute masterpiece and a musical journey that is one of my all-time favorites. For single songs, a very short list includes "God Will", "Pontiac", "LA County", "What Do You Do", "Since The Last Time", "If I Had A Boat"...I could go on and on. Not to mention his covers, which are as great as his originals. An American treasure!!!!!

Agree with CastleMac, Lyle does western swing, but he also has some soul based music. There is no one else like Lyle. Harri, you must listen to Lyle perform duets with Harriet Reed. She is phenomenal and he gave her equal credit in those songs. They even performed together on (can't remember his name. late night talk host from years ago). I am not a country fan, preferring soul / R&B by male artists, but I do enjoy Lyle. He always let his backup singers shine as well. FYI: his surname is pronounced Love-it. Thanks for your review and I hope you listen to Francine Reed. You will enjoy her so much. Blessings from Canada.

A little factoid for you about Lyle's masterclass lineup. Arnold McCuller, the man in the backup vocal group that gave a short solo became a long-time backup for James Taylor. Look for him adding a bit of brilliance to "Shower The People" for JT. Mr McCuller has now retired to become an interventionist for those seeking sobriety. It's always nice to see artists like Lovett, Taylor, Clapton so relaxed in their own status that they allow other band members to shine on a stage they share.

Lovett is among the best singers out there. And one of the better songwriters. His first albums are brilliant, especially "Pontiac". Songs like "Simple song", "If I had a boat", If you were to wake up" and "Church" are dazzling songwriting. He's done a splendid double covers album "Step inside this house" - doing among others Steven Froholz' "American Trilogy", Townes Van Zandt's "If I needed you" and mayby best of all; David Rodriguez' "Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tanqueray Cowboy".

This style of Texas Swing was made famous by Milton Brown and his Brownies and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. The instrumentation is why it’s called Texas swing, notice the fiddle and steel vs just horn sections. Like Benny Goodman or Glen Miller. Bob Wills would have maybe three or four fiddles and steel guitar

I love Lyle Lovett. I've seen him in concert at least a dozen times, both with his large band and just his core musicians. He has a very dry and quirky sense of humor that truly appeals to me and which you see in a lot of his songs, like this one. I was at the concert in Indianapolis the day he and Julia got married. It was a beautiful summer evening at an outdoor venue. This rather tall woman walked on stage wearing a wide brimmed had and a long casual white summer dress. I said to my husband that I thought she looked like Julia Roberts. Then she said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce my husband, Lyle Lovett." They'd come straight from the wedding. It was a great concert, and Lyle did apologize for cutting the encores short. One of my Lyle Lovett favorites is "If I Had a Boat." Here's a link to a live performance. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jL6ffKVk3ciYhKc.html

That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas) Lyle Lovett You say you're not from texas Man as if I couldn't tell You think you pull your boots on right And wear your hat so well So pardon me my laughter 'Cause I sure do understand Even moses got excited When he saw the promised land That's right you're not from Texas That's right you're not from Texas That's right you're not from Texas But Texas wants you anyway That's right you're not from Texas That's right you're not from Texas That's right you're not from Texas But Texas wants you anyway See I was born and raised in texas And it means so much to me Though my girl comes from down in Georgia We were up in Tennessee And as we were driving down the highway She asked me baby what's so great How come you're always going on About your lone star state I said that's right you're not from Texas That's right you're not from Texas That's right you're not from texas But Texas wants you anyway That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway Oh the road it looked so lovely As she stood there on the side And she grew smaller in my mirror As I watched her wave goodbye Those boys from carolina They sure enough could sing But when they came on down to texas We all showed them how to swing Now david's on the radio And old champ's still on the guitar And uncle walt he's home with heidi Hiding in her loving arms That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway They're ok in oklahoma Up in arkansas they're fair But those old folks in missouri They don't even know you're there But at a dance hall down in texas That's the finest place to be The women they all look beautiful And their men will buy your beer for free And they'll say that's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway So won't you let me help you mister Just pull your hat down the way I do And buy your pants just a little longer And next time somebody laughs at you You just tell 'em you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas That's right you're not from texas But texas wants you anyway Source: LyricFind

I know I'm late to the show but if you're still interested his song "Church" is incredible.

My favorite Lyle Lovett tune is "If I Had a Boat". It's rather quirky...but certainly interesting.

The beginning of the song really spoke to Me. I'm originally from Brisbane (Brisy), having been born and lived until I was 13. Then Mum and I left My Abusive Father, We moved back to Her Home Town in The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland. I've lived up here up a Mountain Range behind Cairns for over half of My Life. Many of My Fellow Aussies call Brisy "A Country Town On Steroids!" but it's definitely a Capital City. I would feel like a Total Fraud if tried wearing an Akubra whiich is an Aussie Cowboy Hat. I'm not even a big Belt wearing Lady, so why even try for a Great Big Buckle. I was once given one as a Gift, but I'll never wear it. I have Relatives everywhere up hear, Grandpa was one of at least 9 Kids. Not to mention Old Family Friends and I'm definitely considered as one of their own. But I'm somewhere between a City and Country Girl whose only ever lived in Town. I once went to a Country Themed Party. I stuck to Our usual Party Clothes Jeans, a Good Top and High Heels, nobody complained. I'll continue in second comment.
