A song written by the great Woody Guthrie. This is another video from my 1965 PBS series on What's New. I close this video with the old Elizabeth Cotton tune, "Freight Train."

Tracy, One of the great things about music is that it makes other people happy. I didn't know this until I began playing my keyboard at a local farmer's market, and suddenly discovered I could make people cry. This alarmed me at first, but finally an old English lady let me know that her crying was actually an expression of her inner appreciation, a much needed outlet for her inner being. So, I think you also know that. However, just in case you don't, let me tell you that your music creates a world of joy for so many people. Thanks.

Some say This Land Is Your Land should be the national anthem! Some say Freight Train should be too! You played both great! Your music should be in the Library of Congress right alongside Woody Guthrie and Elizabeth Cotton! You all are national treasures!

This land is your land should & ought to be the national anthem of the United States. I have called my Senators & Congressman suggesting it, but they didn’t and wouldn’t listen to me because they didn’t want to-Ty iCal Washington, DC insiders in the House & Senate that are overpaid.

I can't believe how music changed so much in the last few year, can't believe that people prefer to listen to the nowadays "music" instead of these astonishing pieces of art, even more so they reject it because "it's too old". Does music have an expiration date or something? No idea but for some people it seems does. Anyways I wanted to thank you a lot for doing and uploaded this, I can't stop singing along all the songs, there just so lovely and pure that I can't control myself hahah. Thank for being a great inspiration for me. Greeting from Argentina!!!!

I would urge anyone listening to this song to go immediately to Ry Cooder’s song “No Hard Feelings”. It’s amazing to hear the echoes of Woody Guthrie which run through this very modern folk song although, as Woody himself once said “I ain’t never heard any songs for horses”.

Well sung, however the song is missing a poignant verse of how peoples livelihood was taken from them due to the great depression. "In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people, By the relief office I seen my people; As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking Is this land made for you and me?"

Lol this song got really whitewashed. All of those verses are omitted from the common version. I grew up thinking this was an American pride song instead it was a critique of America.

Thanks, Jim! I can still play Freight Train, but there are better ways. Like the writer of the song, Elizabeth Cotton, really plays it the best way. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZ6FgcJnprvLc6s.html She's a left-handed player, and the strings are strung for a right-handed player, so she's doing the chords upsidedown. Thanks for way you talk about my videos. I'm glad they bring you happiness!

@@tracynewman3256 I love Elizabeth cotton! There is a great live session of her songs on Spotify that I've listened when I got really into folk music. The amount of determination she must have had to learn the guitar is insane. Like, I have the internet and about 2793292 guitar teachers at the touch of a button, she would have had half the resources (and money) we have now :P I hope you're doing well (in these strange times) and thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the reply Tracy. I looked up Elizebeth Cotton and she is pretty amazing for sure. I can't believe that I never have come across her before. Her songs sound a little like Mississippi John Hurt to me. You did such a great job on those shows in 65. You were so professional It's hard to believe that you had no past experience of that type.
