At the time their singer was Anette Olzon, the 2nd female singer of the band. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I could see, you got the cinematic vibe very well, the lyrics and the story vibe. You got the key elements of a Nightwish show: the intricate classical-structured "score" composition, the high level of musicianship of all band members. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. Nightwish is best live. If you want to be really blown away you should undoubtedly and indubitably listen to the version of Storytime from the Wacken Metal Festival 2013 where Nightwish headlined in front of 82,000 fans and did a 15 song set all of whom are incredible. My favourites are Romanticide, Song of Myself and Ghost Love Score.

Man, it's great to see an Annette reaction. She's often forgotten out of the 3 singers but she can really hold her own. I prefer Floor's version of this song, but I still think Annette does a damn good job and I still really enjoy it. Glad you guys reacted to her first. She needs some love. 1st Singer - Tarya "the Siren": powerful, haunting, ethereal - operatic 2nd Singer - Annette "the pixie" - sweet, whimsical, mischievous - pop 3rd Singer - Floor "the Valkyrie": Floor - metal I don't really know how to describe Floor's vocals. :\ I mean "versatile" works but that's rather vague. All 3 singers are absolutely worth a listen though. I find each gives such a different vibe from one another that it almost feels like a new song sometimes so I have multiple versions of some songs that I love to listen to. Floor's signature song is Ghost Love Score Live at Wacken(pronounced "vah-ken") 2013. It gives a good idea of her vocal style but not the complete picture. None of the singers styles can really be summed up in one song though. I guess you could describe Floor as a very technical singer but you don't notice it unless you're looking for it. She gives the song what she feels it needs vocally. Still kinda vague but that's all I got. Tarja's("Tar-e-yah") signature song is Phantom of the Opera Live from End of An Era DVD where the bassist Marko also sings and he's an insanely skilled and wonderful singer as well. Tarja has a mic but she doesn't need it. Her voice could fill a theater on its own. Her technical skill is next level and doesn't sacrifice one bit of performance for technique. She's a master of her craft. Annette's signature song is Scareytale? I think? I'm not as sure on hers. She slays it though that's for sure. Also a bit of a different side of her vocally. Marko's signature song seems to be The Islander Live at Tampere 2015. It does showcase his vocal skill quite well and is just a fantastic song and performance. Marko is a beast of a vocalist but he can do soft too. I mean the man has Floor as a backup singer for some songs and can still stand front and centre and hold the audiences attention. He's incredible. I do recommend the 2013 Wacken version of Storytime though so you can see how different Floor makes some songs and why it never hurts to listen to the original as well. Just make sure you do any reactions however you guys want and whatever way you guys think you will enjoy more!

This clip was from their movie they did Imaginarium. I recommend Romanticide and Song of Myself next, but it is a deep rabbithole and every thing they do is worth a look, but you really need to see the Valkyrie Floor.

I love your reaction. The thing with Nightwish is that their two first singers left the band because of various reasons, the one singing in this one is the 2nd one. The current singer has been with the band for about 8 years now and everyone has kinda moved on, and with new fans coming in and with the passage of time people tend to forget that yeah, Anette did rock and we should all be very appreciative for what she achieved with Nightwish. This reaction does remind me of a time long ago when we didn't have so many vocalists doing their versions of the same songs and there wasn't such a direct way to compare them, and this goes back in time even further than Anette's era. Both of the first two vocalists leaving the band left deep wounds in the psyche both of the fandom and the band, which erupt regularly in meaningless arguments about which vocalist is the "best" and which one is not. It's great to see an honest blind reaction to Anette, to give the newer Floor era fans a glimpse of how a good part of the fandom received her back then.

Wow, I 've never seen this version before, now I know why Nightwish needed Floor. So much more depth and range in her performance than this and she sings all of it not relying on choral singers. And her live performances are way better than this. Watch anything from the 2013 Wacken concert

I love that you guys went for the vid rather than the live version, Annette doesn't get the love she deserves. She doesn't hold a candle to Floor but she is still brilliant and I love this track. Beware that you're likely to be bombarded by info as the "Nightwish Army" have a list of stuff they tend to post on every reaction. I also love that you started with Storytime rather than Ghost Love Score which is the usual entry point nowadays. Floor Jansen is the newest singer and she is even better, her take of Storytime live is incredible (she does the choral stabs at the end herself) would recommend trying "Romanticide" next, live at Wacken (which you'll see a lot of if you keep up with Nightwish as it's a seminal show with some incredible perfomances in. Romanticide is incredible, shows of both Floor and Marko (the bassist who near enough a lead singer at this point) and sets you up for current nightwish. Ghost Loves Score if you like the symphonic stuff. Yours is an Empty Hope if you want some female growly vocals and possibly the heaviset Nightwish have been Song of Myself if you want an epic feel in a short time IF you're then into it go for Poet and the Pendulum and Greatest Show on Earth as Poet is emotionally draining (awesome song but the lyrical content is overwhelming) and Greatest Show is 23 minutes long (you wont feel the time as it's amazing but dont START with that one :P ) and from there the world. The best advice though is always go for a live show if you can.

Your first experience with Nightwish featured their least impressive singer (Annette Olzen), in their least impressive format (Music Video). Nightwish is at their best LIVE. Their audiences go completely mental - and I mean "Iron Maiden breaking the attendance record for a soccer stadium in Brazil"-level mental. Which by itself would be a pretty notable thing, but in addition (1) their music is extremely powerful, intricate and complex; and (2) unlike 95% of the bands out there touring, they are actually capable of playing their music live. EVERY member of the band is a world-class musician - there isn't a weak link anywhere. But even that's not the most impressive part. That part is named Floor Jansen, the band's 3rd and current singer. She's arguably the best singer in the world. There literally isn't anything she can't do, from Operatic soprano to death-growls, and in multiple languages. The singer she's most compared to in terms of stage presence and raw vocal power is Freddie Mercury, and having seen both live I can factually concur. Floor is a force of nature - you might as well argue with a hurricane. By now the Nightwish Army has made themselves apparent to you, with lots of suggestions as to how to proceed next. We can be kind of overwhelming, but you'll soon see why. The three main suggestions are these: Stick with live recordings; Start with the Wacken 2013 concert video, and Don't react to "The Poet And The Pendulum" or "The Greatest Show On Earth" until you've gotten more familiar with the band and its history. Here's why: Nightwish is primarily a live band. They interact personally with their audiences more than most bands, and they and the audience raise each other's energy levels to truly amazing heights. Wacken has the best picture, sound and performances of all their concert videos, with the added benefit of an extremely pumped audience of 82,000. I love Nightwish music videos. They are always so creative and well made to go with the songs. Yes, Floor is a great live singer but hearing this song with the original singer is the best way to hear it for the first time. Just like with the older Tarja songs should be heard with her first before Floor to understand and appreciate the originals. Theres a lot of personality added to the songs that make more sense when the original vocalist performs it. Also some studio songs from Nightwish are just simply much clearer and easier to hear all the different sounds, effects and instruments thats going on in the background. So for a pure Floor showoff then live performances are great! But dont believe those here that say live versions are THE ONLY WAY to go, obviously not. Anyhow, great reaction!

If you notice the break in the middle with the choir vocals the singer can't do, she doesn't have the skill or power to pull it off, but the current singer does so what the Wacken 2013 live version. I am going to take some heat for this remark, but this singer Anette just could not pull off alot of the Nightwish songs andd they had to be dropped from the set list for 5 years. Now that they have Floor Jansen, al songs are game, and she adds her little twist to each and everyone. Nightwish has 2 album with Floor on vocals and you can see the difference. The newest album HUMAN:NATURE is a masterpiece and you get to hear her magic, and also Tuomas's magic(keyboardist and composer) he is referred to as "The modern day Mozart"

This is actually from the NIGHTWISH MOTION PITCTURE!!! Tuomas wrote and was the main character in full length movie Imaginarium, which had the music from the entire Imaginarium album as the score in the background. the music video you just watched is from an actual scene from the movie itself. its a total headtrip and TOTALLY WORTH WATCHING!!! but, yes, i do concur that Floor sings it better (personal opinion) in the 2013 Wacken Live video

You ain't seen or heard anything yet!!!! Floor Jansen a/k/a the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal (the latest singer) did this at the Wacken 2013 Open Air Festival concert and it would totally blow you away!!! Another great LIVE group and the best power metal band playing today is Lovebites LIVE Raise Some Hell (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9NdZt2ZqKzLmJs.html) or try Scream for Me (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7WXZ8qnuLvRc6M.html). This all female band is insanely talented and will blow your heads off. Take the best of 80's metal (Iron Maiden/Judas Priest etc) mix in some Dragon Force and have a bluesy vocalist sing in English and bring it to a whole new level and you have this awesome band!!!

You want to be blown away. Wait until you see their current vocalist, Floor Jansen. She is beyond doubt one of the best female vocalists in metal. She can do it, including growls.

Lots of female leads in this genre in europe....you have only scratched the surface...delain, lucuna coil, within temptation, leaves eyes, amaranth, jinger, epica, arch enemy, sirenia, tristania, xandria, edenbridge, lunatica,the agonist, nemesea, revamp and after forever ( floors old bands), tarja (1st nightwish lead), the dark element (2nd nightwish lead), unleash the archers(power)....and so on....welcome to the woman's metal world...

Great reaction mate Nightwish is the top of the simphonic metal band and same create own metal subgenre, like Babymetal (for which it's a pity you stopped reacting).
