The kayak and elements WILL test you. I love kayak fishing the most because of it. The bass boat life is cool but not my fav, shore fishing is fun and I have a lot of spots I really enjoy but there's just something about how the kayak let's you get up and personal with nature in ways other style of fishing don't.

Jon you should do a float on the Susquehanna River in PA. You will be catching 3-4 pound smallmouth all day long. Best time to do it is in April/May. The Juniata River is awesome as well. I’ve had 100+ fish days on that river. You won’t be disappointed!

You should do a float down the St. John River. You can get some nice Large Mouth, then you will get into brackish water close to the ocean.

You should try Village Creek in the Big Thicket. While not a major river, it flows into the Neches about 9 miles from the closest ramp. I did a 6 day, 5 night down it with my best friend. Tons of fish, great camping grounds on sandbars. I do not recommend going in the Spring/Early Summer, though. The water can be (and is) really high and fast. You can catch needlenose gar, crappie, sunfish, LMB, and HUGE Alligator Gar (6’-9’). I’ve even caught gar in the Neches on a 65 Whopper Plopper! There are tons of great turns, some slight challenges, beautiful scenery and nature, and great eddies everywhere. The trip we did was a 65-70m trek. We brought 10 g of water, fishing poles & tackle, one tent, a dog, a cast iron pan, chairs, a pot, cups, frozen prepared foods & meats in a 5-day cooler, sunscreen, snacks, and those water flavor packs. It was awesome. You need some light pants for floats like that. And a brimmed hat. Splash your shirt with water to keep cooler. When the sun is bouncing onto your face, wear a face shield. It will make your trip less irritating. Just take off everything after you setup camp and you don’t have to worry about pesky tan lines! 🤣

Started in small 1 person Kayaks, switched to canoes, then to big freight canoes on the lower stretch to deal with barge wakes.Met some awesome people along the way, people who had little but shared a meal(we always left them with a bunch of fish) and a beer... trip of a lifetime!
