To study James Jamerson alone will make a pretty decent bass player out of you ;) I love his bass lines; most of them are much more inventive and musical than 97% of what has come after him. So many other bass players serve to define the harmonies of a song, with some passing notes between, but JJ manages to make them into the secret gardens of the songs you hear them on. Many you recognise by the bassline alone and many are so subliminal that you don't realise they are there and or how super important they are to the rest of the melody. Without his basslines, many of the songs would be quite banal.
